St. Luke Parish 125 t h Anniversary Block Party Save the Date! Our series of events to celebrate the 125 th Anniversary (1887-2012) of St. Luke Parish will begin on Saturday, September 15, with the best-ever Parish Block Party at 6:00 pm in the parking lot. Good food, beverages, music and fun for all ages as the St. Luke Men s Club provides a great kick-off to our happy occasion. Also, mark your calendar for Sunday, October 21, for a special 11:00 am 125 th Anniversary Mass, followed by a gala reception in the gym. Please watch the Bulletin for more details each week. St. Luke Parish is 125 years old! Let s celebrate! Know the Mass, One Word at a Time Photo John Zich Strange as it sounds, the Mass is a continuous action of joining. We join ourselves to each other; we join ourselves to the heavenly worship of the angels and saints; and, most certainly, we join ourselves to Jesus in his self-sacrificing love. When we join ourselves we connect and unite ourselves. Our action of joining as we connect and unite ourselves so completely pervades and colors the entire Mass, that it can easily escape our notice. We join ourselves to each other when we walk into church and take a position with other worshippers, when we sing, and when we make the common responses. We join ourselves to heaven when we praise and thank God, because that is exactly what angels and saints do in heaven. We join ourselves to Jesus when we offer ourselves with him and receive him in Holy Communion. LUKE River Forest, IL 60305-1835 9:00 Family Mass The 9:00 Mass every Sunday is our Family Mass, and we encourage all families with young children to attend. On the first three Sundays of each month the Contemporary Choir sings (beginning on September 23), and we offer the Children s Liturgy of the Word. Two groups of children (ages 3-5 and 6-and-up) go to the sacristies where a catechist leads them in prayer and reflection on the day s Scriptures. On the last Sunday such as September 30 the children are invited to come and sit near the altar steps, where a priest, deacon or catechist gives a special homily geared to them. In addition, our Children s Choirs will sing on the fourth Sunday of the month beginning in October. We also invite families to take a turn bringing the bread and wine to the altar during the Offertory. Just notify the usher before Mass that your family would like to do it. All of which, we hope, will help our children and families to receive special blessings as we worship together at the 9:00 Family Mass.

I hope you are excited about the beginning of a new school year. So much of high school can be fun and exciting, but it can also be tough to balance everything. I am writing to invite you to come share the excitement and challenges of high school, with other teens at St. Luke. Youth Ministry is not a special club or a bunch of religion classes; it is your home at St. Luke and it comes with a whole variety of opportunities to get involved, talk about the things that matter to you, make a difference in the world, develop as a leader, and grow friendships with people who really care. This year, I hope you will join a small group. Many teens who went on our retreats said that small group talk time was their favorite part, so we are starting bi-monthly small groups for the first time this year! These groups are not a class. They are a chance for you to meet with a group of teens throughout the school year and talk about what is going on in your life, how you feel about it, and what God has to do with it all. To join, or just to talk about whether a group is right for you, please call or email me. Second, I invite you and your friends to join us for the September 30 trip to Six Flags Great America. We have so much fun doing this with other churches, that we are again joining forces with St. Giles for what is sure to be a fun-filled day. Registration forms are available on the Youth Ministry page of our website and in the Youth Office. I invite you to stay up-to-date by joining our email list and checking-out our Youth Ministry page at www.stlukeparish.org, our Facebook page, our blog at stlukeyouthministry.tumblr.com, and this weekly column in the parish Sunday bulletin. I am looking forward to seeing you this year! If you have any questions or just want to say hello please call me at 708-435-8922 or email me at acollins@stlukeparish.org. Peace Amanda SEPTEMBER 2, 2012 Twenty-second Sunday in Ordinary 7
