Ezekiel and the Valley of Dry Bones! Ezekiel 37:1-14! I remember hearing a quote that went something along the lines, Sin will always take you farther than you want to go, keep you longer than you want to stay, and cost you more than you want to pay. When you consider the experience of Israel in the Old Testament, you can see how this is truly the case. What began as a toleration of idols led to a flirtation with idols, which then led to a wholesale worship of idols. As their idolatry increased, so did their pain. God allowed them to experience the bitter fruit of their decision to abandon His truth. He was faithful to warn His people through the voice of the prophets such as Elijah, Isaiah, and Jeremiah. Yet due to their refusal to repent of their sinful ways and return to Him with their whole heart, He raised up foreign powers against them who plundered them and carried them away into captivity.! The book of Ezekiel is yet another example of God s faithfulness to discipline His people while also keeping His covenant promises with Abraham s descendants.! The prophet Ezekiel lived at the same time as Jeremiah, who was in Jerusalem during the time of its fall. At the same time Jeremiah was in Jerusalem, Ezekiel was in Babylon and had a ministry there among the captives. Nebuchadnezzar and the Babylonians had carried the citizens of Jerusalem into exile in several waves, and Ezekiel had been taken captive during one of those earlier waves, perhaps even ten years prior to the fall of Jerusalem in 586 B.C. More than likely, he was taken to Babylon in 587 B.C. along with the royal family and many of the leading citizens of Jerusalem.! Ezekiel had been trained as a priest and came from a priestly family, which means that he was well aware of the religious life of his people. He may have even heard Jeremiah preach in Jerusalem before being taken away, though neither men refer to each other in their writings.! The book of Ezekiel is unique in that it is the most chronological of all the prophetic books of the Old Testament. Ezekiel is specific at mentioning the dates when God s

Word came to him. His book is also quite strange in that God called him to do some bizarre things in order to communicate truth to His people:! called to lie motionless on his side for a period of time! bound up in his house with ropes! unable to speak! order not to grieve over the death of his wife! Mark Dever - This book has been regarded as so strange that Jewish rabbis would often not allow young men to read Ezekiel until they were thirty years old, lest they become discouraged at the difficulty of understanding the Scriptures and so despise them.! Anyone who has read through the book will immediately recognize that the prophet Ezekiel was a remarkable man who was given several remarkable visions, the first of which can be found in chapter 1. There are three basic sequences of visions that God gives Ezekiel, and understanding these will help you see the purpose of the book.! The first sequence occurs in chapters 1-3 where Ezekiel, now in Babylon, sees God coming to him in a vision. These visions are largely a vision of God as Israel s true King.! The second sequence occurs in chapters 8-11 and is really a flashback in which God shows Ezekiel how His presence departed from Jerusalem because of idolatry in the temple. These visions are largely about the departure of God s glory.! The third sequence comes at the end of the book in chapters 36-48, and these are largely visions of Israel s future hope. In chapter 36, we read about God s remarkable promise to gather His people from the nations, cleanse them from their impurities and idolatries, replace their hearts of stone with a heart of flesh, and place His Spirit within them so they can truly obey Him from the heart.! Ezekiel preaches to those who thought all hope had been lost.!

Jeremiah had preached that even though God s people would be in Babylon for seventy years, His thoughts toward His people were of peace and not of evil.! Jeremiah 29:10-11 - For thus says the Lord: When the seventy years are completed for Babylon, I will visit you, and I will fulfill to you My promise and bring you back to this place. For I know the plans I have for you, declares the Lord, plans for peace and not for evil, to give you a future and a hope.! Emil Brunner - What oxygen is to the lungs, such is hope for the meaning of life.! Yes, God had judged the sins of His people, and the first half of Ezekiel is the prophet s affirmation of this. However, God will not forsake His covenant. God s covenant faithfulness is always the hope of His people. Ezekiel preaches to those who are in captivity and assures them of God s promise that He will gather His people and bring them back into their land.! Chapter 37 is a vision of how exactly God will do all of this. Two things to look at the experience and explanation of the vision.! 1. The EXPERIENCE of Ezekiel s vision (37:1-10)! The hand of the Lord was upon me, and He brought me out in the Spirit of the Lord and set me down in the middle of the valley; it was full of bones.! The vision that Ezekiel is given by the Lord is spiritual in nature. There is no evidence in the text that he was literally taken and placed in a valley of bones. The text simply says that the Lord brought him out in the Spirit and set in him the midst of a valley.! As you well can imagine, Ezekiel was no doubt shocked by what he saw. Everywhere he looked, as far as the eye could see, he saw nothing but human bones, the skeletal remains of perhaps a once vast army. Who knows what had become of them? How had such a multitude met such a bitter end? Perhaps they had crossed the mountains, entered the valley, and were unaware of the disaster that awaited. Often in those days, enemies would lurk behind the ridge tops and attack unsuspecting travelers who made

their way into the valley below. In a valley, an army becomes an easy target by those who occupy the high ground.! Regardless of how it might have happened, Ezekiel finds himself in the middle of this valley filled with the bones of the dead, a very macabre scene indeed. It is a fitting illustration of the spiritual life of not one or two people, but the entire nation that had once known God s blessing. These dry bones are an:! ILLUSTRATION of spiritual death (v. 1-2)! And He led me around among them, and behold, there were very many on the surface of the valley, and behold, they were very dry.! That these bones are described as being very dry is evidence that they had been dead for a long time. Obviously, this was not something that had happened overnight. This was no recent disaster, but was the product of a long process of death and decay.! As far as Ezekiel could see, the valley was full of these dry bones. Never before in his life had he seen death on such a wide scale as this. As he stared into the empty eye sockets of bleached skulls, he must have been taken back by such a revolting sight.! In the Jewish mind, nothing would have been considered to be more humiliating than for the body of the dead to not be washed, wrapped, and properly buried with dignity in a tomb. Yet the skeletal remains of these former people had become prey for vultures and scavengers. It was horrific and shocking.! And yet this was the purpose of the vision!! Death especially spiritual death is no laughing matter. It is shocking and should always be an attention grabber. Physical death is the result of Adam s sin. Whenever we lose a loved one, there is something within us that says things ought not be this way.! Romans 6:23 - For the wages of sin is death! Israel s sin had led to their death as a nation of people. They had paid the ultimate price for their refusal to submit their lives to God s loving rule over them. Now, due to their sin

and disobedience, their carcasses were strewn about all throughout a foreign land, much like these skeletons scattered throughout the valley floor.! God had better in mind for them than they had for themselves, but they would have none of it.! The Lord takes Ezekiel and places him in the middle of the valley and leads him around among the bones so he could see for himself just how dry they were, and it was all an illustration of spiritual death a tragic picture of man living his life separated and cut off from the life of God.! INCAPABLE of living again by themselves (v. 3-4)! And He said to me, Son of man, can these bones live? And I answered, O Lord God, you know. Then He said to me, Prophesy over these bones, and say to them, O dry bones, hear the Word of the Lord.! Notice that God asks Ezekiel a bizarre question Can these bones live? Obviously, the normal answer would be no. I love how Ezekiel responds:! He answers, O Lord God, You know. The NASB translates it this way: Sovereign Lord, You alone know.! There is no way that dead, dry, and lifeless skeletons can come back to life all by themselves. It just doesn t happen. From a human perspective, it is impossible for death to be reversed. But from a divine perspective, it most certainly not beyond the realm of possibility.! Romans 4:17 - [God] who gives life to the dead and calls into existence the things that do not exist.! These skeletons are an illustration of spiritual death, and they are incapable of living again by themselves. Then, notice also how they are:! INFUSED with life by God s Word (v. 5-6)!

Then He said to me, Prophesy over these bones, and say to them, O dry bones, hear the Word of the Lord. Thus says the Lord God to these bones: Behold, I will cause breath to enter you, and you shall live. And I will lay sinews upon you, and will cause flesh to come upon you, and cover you with skin, and put breath in you, and you shall live, and you shall know that I am the Lord.! Did anyone ever receive a stranger assignment than this? God tells Ezekiel to prophesy over these bones, literally to preach to these dry bones. It is a ridiculous picture, to say the least. Use your imagination and see Ezekiel standing on a platform in the middle of this valley preaching to a bunch of bones.! I can guarantee you that no preacher in history ever had a more dead congregation than he did!! Thom Rainer, Autopsy of a Deceased Church - I was their church consultant in 2003. The church s peak attendance was 750 in 1975. By the time I got there the attendance had fallen to an average of 83. The large sanctuary seemed to swallow the relatively small crowd on Sunday morning.! He mentions at least 11 reasons the church closed its doors:! 1. The church refused to look like the community! 2. The church had no community-focused ministries! 3. Members became more focused on memorials! 4. The percentage of the budget for members needs kept increasing! 5. There were no evangelistic emphases! 6. The members had more and more arguments about what they wanted! 7. With few exceptions, pastoral tenure grew shorter and shorter! 8. The church rarely prayed together! 9. The church had no clarity as to why it existed!

10. The members idolized another era! 11. The facilities continued to deteriorate! Perhaps the biggest oxymoron in history is dead church. By its very definition, a church is a living, breathing, vibrant organism that lives by the Word of the Lord.! Of all people, the nation of Israel should have been alive and vibrant as the people of God to whom God had revealed Himself through His Word. Somewhere alone the way, they began to desire other things and worship other gods. The Word of God and the worship of God faded from view, and all that was left is a valley full of dry bones.! If there was to by any hope for these lifeless skeletons, it would only come through the life-giving Word of God, by the power of the Spirit of God. And so God commands Ezekiel to preach the Word of the Lord. All great revivals throughout history have at least one common denominator rediscovery of the immeasurable value of God s Word.! J. Edwin Orr - Revival is the Spirit of God working through the Word of God in the lives of the people of God for the glory of God.! God commands Ezekiel to prophesy over these bones, and say to them, O dry bones, hear the Word of the Lord. If there was to be any life whatsoever, it would be the direct result of hearing the Word of the Lord. There is only one hope for those in the grip of spiritual death they must hear the Word. And in order for that to happen, God s Spirit has to remove the deafness from the ears and blindness from the eyes. Faith comes only by by hearing, and hearing by the Word of God.! Hebrews 4:12 - For the Word of God is living and active.! God s Word has life, and God s Word imparts life.! John 6:63 - It is the Spirit who gives life; the flesh is no help at all. The words that I have spoken to you are spirit and life.! Peter tells believers:!

1 Peter 1:23 - You have been born again, not of perishable seed but of imperishable, through the living and abiding Word of God.! What does God have to say to these dry bones?! 37:5-7 - Thus says the Lord God to these bones: Behold, I will cause breath to enter you, and you shall live. And I will lay sinews upon you, and will cause flesh to come upon you, and cover you with skin, and put breath in you, and you shall live, and you shall know that I am the Lord.! In other words, God says that He will do something by His grace that will bring life from death, and beauty from ashes.! INTERCONNECTED and given purpose (v. 7-8)! So I prophesied as I was commanded. And as I prophesied, there was a sound, and behold, a rattling, and the bones came together, bone to its bone. And I looked, and behold, there were sinews upon them, and flesh had come upon them, and skin had covered them. But there was no breath in them.! As Ezekiel preached to the skeletons, a supernatural thing began to happen. He began to hear a sound, a rattling among the bones. The bones began to come together and become connected with each other. The leg bone connected to the knee bone, the knee bone connected to the thigh bone, the thigh bone connected to the hip bone, now hear the Word of the Lord!! Muscles and tendons and flesh came upon them, and skin covered them. But there was still one problem no breath.! No matter how impressive you may look on the outside, with no breath, you are nothing more than a dressed up corpse.! Notice verses 9-10:! Then He said to me, Prophesy to the breath; prophesy, son of man, and say to the breath, Thus says the Lord God: Come from the four winds, O breath, and breathe on

these slain, that they may live. So I prophesied as He commanded me, and the breath came into them, and they lived and stood on their feet, an exceedingly great army.! Breath - Hebrew word is ruah and means wind, breath, spirit! Jesus used this language when He spoke to Nicodemus about the wind blowing where it wants to, referring to the new birth through the Holy Spirit.! There is also reference here to the creation of Adam in Genesis 2 where Scripture says that even though Adam was complete in a physical sense, he had no life until the breath of God entered into him and he became a living soul.! The same imagery is true in Ezekiel s vision.! It was only as the breath of life came into their bodies that they became a great army with divine purpose.! 2. The EXPLANATION of Ezekiel s vision (37:11-14)! God interprets the vision for Ezekiel in verses 11-14. It was His response to His people s expression of hopelessness.! A picture of Israel s tragic condition! The bones were a accurate depiction of the whole house of Israel, both the northern and southern kingdom.! A picture of God s redemptive promise! The Lord made promises to His people in chapters 33-36. The question, Can these bones live? was designed to show Ezekiel the helpless condition of God s people in exile. Can a dead and lifeless nation under the control of a foreign power be resurrected and become a thriving kingdom once again? It was sin that had brought about the death of the nation.! Sin s destructive power is most obvious on a personal level where it destroys human lives.!

Ezekiel is reminded that only God can give life to those who are physically and spiritually dead. Nothing short of a divine miracle will resurrect the dead. Yet that is exactly what God promises to do for His people!! A picture of our spiritual need! Without Christ, we are as sinful and dead as Israel ever was. Our problem is not that we are sick our problem is that we are dead in trespasses and sins. We need spiritual life that can only be found in Christ.! Colossians 1:21-22 - And you, who were once alienated and hostile in mind, doing evil deeds, He has now reconciled in His body of flesh by His death, in order to present you holy and blameless and above reproach before Him.! When I was lost, I was without hope and helpless to save myself from my sinful condition. Yet God was not satisfied to leave me that way. Jesus entered Death Valley in the sinner s place so that we might have hope.! Romans 5:5-6 - Hope does not put us to shame, because God s love has been poured out in our hearts through the Holy Spirit who has been given to us. For while we were still weak, at the right time Christ died for the ungodly.! God demonstrates His love for us in this way in that while we were still sinners, Christ died for us. Since, therefore, we have now been justified by His blood, much more shall we be saved by Him from the wrath of God. For if while we were enemies we were reconciled to God by the death of His Son, much more, now that we are reconciled, shall we be saved by His life!! John 11:25 - I am the resurrection and the life. Whoever believes in Me, though he die, yet shall he live.! Christ is the Chief Cornerstone upon which this living house called the church is now being built up. We are people of hope!! Ezekiel s vision shows us how:!

Man s condition is exile! Man s need is conversion! Man s hope is resurrection! This passage shows us that our hope is inextricably bound up in the faithfulness of God to keep His promises. Edward Mote, a name you may or may not be familiar with, lived in the late 1700 s. His parents were openly hostile to the Christian faith.! As a young man, it would seem that Edward Mote was sure to follow after their same unbelieving example. However, he become apprenticed to a cabinetmaker who, in addition to teaching him the cabinet making trade, also led him to faith in Jesus Christ. Mote became a Christian and immediately fell in love in Christ. His life took on new meaning. He acknowledged that it was the grace of God alone that brought him from death and darkness into marvelous light. He began writing poetry that led to a love of music and hymn writing. One of the first hymns that he wrote begins with these words:! My hope is built on nothing less than Jesus blood and righteousness; I dare not trust the sweetest frame, but wholly lean on Jesus name!! The question at hand is the same one God asked Ezekiel: Can these bones live? Is there any hope for you? The gospel answers that question with a resounding Yes! The invitation is extended to you today to repent and believe in Christ.
