Church of the Divine Child, Dearborn, Michigan Page 3 Things Above from Fr. Bilot Last Sunday, after Mass, some parishioners handed me a business card. Actually, it was a picture of the inside of our church, and on the back side of the card are the words: In remembrance of the joyful occasion of the 25th Anniversary of the Church of the Divine Child, Dearborn, Michigan, June 14, 1950 June 15, 1975. I so enjoyed seeing this picture. (see page 13 for photo) The communion rail is still intact. I remember Fr. Kucyk telling me that he had the high church ceiling painted (what you see today). When the church was built and decorated, the high ceiling was actually a burgundy color. I also remember Fr. K telling me the story about a woman who came into the church and was scolding him for painting the ceiling burgundy (it was already ½ painted with the new color, white), and that she didn t like him making the change from white to burgundy! In his annoyance, he made it clear to her that the ceiling was originally painted burgundy and that the white was the new color! He said she was speechless, and I laughed. We become so familiar with our surroundings that we actually forget what was and what is. As you may notice, after 35 years, the ceiling is once again in need of repair and painting. We successfully refurbished the undercroft ceiling, and now it is time to focus on the high ceiling. Since the project will involve scaffolding and somewhat of an inconvenience, we are searching for a time when we can do the work with minimal disruption to our worship. We are looking at the fall or possibly next Lent. If we do the work during Lent, it will be a good test of our patience to be inconvenienced. Sound like a good Lenten observance? I will keep you posted as we move forward. So, if you took a moment and did the math, last Sunday was our 65th anniversary as a parish. How providential that I received the card memento on our actual anniversary. I didn t realize it until someone else pointed it out to me as I was showing the card to others. I guess we quietly celebrated the anniversary since it obviously slipped my mind. Perhaps, we can do some type of remembrance/celebration in the fall. We are so blessed by God s abundance goodness. Please pray for our parish as we move forward under the guidance of the Holy Spirit. Today, we celebrate Father s Day. A national holiday where we take a moment to thank our fathers for the gift of life. Yes, our mothers brought us into the world, but we needed our fathers' help in the process! As I mentioned on Mother s Day, we may have mixed feelings/memories about our parents good or bad. Most importantly, we look to our God and thank him for the gift of our life and our father s role in giving us that gift. I would like to address all of our fathers and let them know how important their role is in the faith development of their family. As a father, you are the provider, the protector and the leader. I strongly believe that the father is the spiritual warrior of the home. If dad doesn t attend Mass and lead the family in prayer, the household is weaker and more susceptible to the entrance of evil and moral decay. As the spiritual warrior, the father defends the family, with the help of St. Michael, to bring goodness and holiness into the hearts of his wife and his children. Unfortunately, many men do not see themselves in this role because they are caught up in finances, getting ahead in their career, and not comfortable being the teacher in the ways of the faith. I can assure you that the father, as spiritual warrior of the home, sets the tone. If faith, Mass, prayer and moral goodness are top priorities for himself and his family, the rest will follow. Yes, there may be resistance, but as the provider and protector, the father will not allow anything to get in the way of the goodness God has given to him through his family. So, this Father s Day, take time to pray for all fathers, that they may be good leaders, providers and protectors: spiritual warriors of and for the family. Finally, don t forget that this Wednesday from 6:30 8:30PM, we will be at Uncle Ray s Bar and Grill for a question and answer session on faith, church, and helping those who are questioning life and a relationship with God. See the insert in today s bulletin. Don t forget to invite people who have fallen away from the church to come on by! In gratitude, Fr. Jim Bilot Happy 23rd Anniversary Fr. Bilot! Next week our diocese will take up the Peter s Pence Collection, which provides Pope Francis with the funds he needs to carry out his charitable works around the world. The proceeds benefit the most disadvantaged: victims of war, oppression, and disasters. Join our Holy Father as a witness of charity to those who are suffering.

Page 4 Fr. John Kopson s Commentary Church of the Divine Child, Dearborn, Michigan A Prayer for Fathers Back to Basics! Well summer is finally here! Hopefully, we can use this summer as a time to refresh, renew, and reinvigorate ourselves! This is precisely why so many people hit the open roads seeking a vacation. However, we are all in need of spiritual refreshment, renewal, and re-commitment! In this regard, we need to get back to basics! In the Gospels, Jesus made it perfectly clear that we are to be baptized, that we are to confess our sins (i.e. go to confession), and that we are to receive His Body and Blood in the Eucharist every single Sunday, and Holy Day of Obligation, without fail! Brothers and sisters, these are the basics of the Christian life! Sometimes at funeral Masses, we are reminded of these basics. One Gospel passage that one might hear at a funeral Mass comes from the sixth chapter of John s Gospel. In it we hear Jesus proclaim these precious words: "I am the living bread that came down from heaven; whoever eats this bread will live forever; and the bread that I will give is my flesh for the life of the world. The Jews quarreled among themselves, saying, How can this man give us [his] flesh to eat? Jesus said to them, Amen, amen, I say to you, unless you eat the flesh of the Son of Man and drink his blood, you do not have life within you. Whoever eats my flesh and drinks my blood has eternal life, and I will raise him on the last day. For my flesh is true food, and my blood is true drink. Whoever eats my flesh and drinks my blood remains in me and I in him. Just as the living Father sent me and I have life because of the Father, so also the one who feeds on me will have life because of me. This is the bread that came down from heaven. Unlike your ancestors who ate and still died, whoever eats this bread will live forever (John 6: 51-58). Almighty God, you have taught us that you are the Father of us all, And that all fatherhood takes its origin from you. You protect us from evil And provide our daily bread. You are strength and integrity, blessing and the font of life. We thank you, then, for our fathers. Though human, they are also a reflection of you, Lord God. They are your gift to us. We pray for all fathers today. May they realize the greatness of their vocation And have the strength to live it without fear. Forgive their sins, and keep their eyes raised up to you To those who still make this earthly journey with us, Give us the grace to love them as we should; And to those whom you have called from this life, Give a special place of honor in the heavenly kingdom With you, the Father of all. We pray through Christ our Lord. Amen. This seems pretty basic and straight to the point doesn t it??? With the Eucharist, we have Eternal Life; without it, we don t. If you know someone who has difficulty understanding these beautiful words, please clip this passage out of this bulletin and give it to them. Please use this passage to pray with during these summer months, and allow these words to impact you! If you have any questions, I am always here for you. God Bless You! Fr. John

He taught us a prayer that beings with Our Father. We are all God s children, then. On this day that we honor our earthly fathers, grandfathers, or men that play a father's role in a child's life, here s a special opportunity to do the will of our Creator. This weekend, the St. Vincent de Paul is holding an annual collection for our boys and girls summer camps. You may honor your father, husband, grandfather, brother or friend with a donation to our church Poor Box. All proceeds go to support the SVdP Youth Camps on Lake Huron. They have served needy kids 8-14 for more than 90 years. Your donations will support that legacy of Christian service and youth formation for kids who need a break from broken homes and challenging family situations, like chronic illness and unemployment. On behalf of all the children who will benefit from your donations, thank you very much for your support! Happy Father s Day to Our Father and yours.

Church of the Divine Child, Dearborn, Michigan Page 15 We Humble Ourselves Turning a Nation Back to God August 29-30, 2015 Ford Field Park, 22051 Cherry Hill, Dearborn Based on 2 Chronicles 7:14, this patriotic concert will feature a symphony orchestra, a choral group, a drum and fife corps, and reenactments of historical figures. The stage will be adjacent to an area of the park that will house tents and encampments of the historical reenactors on Saturday (10 am 7 pm) and Sunday ( 10 am 3 pm, followed by the concert) so that visitors can experience what it must have been like for our ancestors. And the audience will be encouraged to dress in Colonial or Civil War clothing for the Event. Everything is arranged to allow a family to attend at no cost (there s no admission fee) or minimal cost (if they want to buy hot dogs and apple pie). And whether or not visitors choose to buy souvenirs, everyone will come away with memories that will last a lifetime. www.wehumbleourselves.com New introductory rate for our Kids Klub Summer Day Camp! $90.00 for the first week, $110.00 for each subsequent week!
