Notes from our Leaders THE ANXIOUS LITTLE CHURCH Read: St. John 21:19-31 New Hope Church Family, With Easter coming up soon, I could use any one of several Easter texts as the text for this month's message. I used the one from the 2nd Sunday of Easter because it speaks to your situation. Picture that anxious little church on Easter evening. What an anxious little band of disciples. They were huddled behind closed doors; afraid of the Roman authorities. Then, suddenly, the risen Christ appeared to them. He came into the room through the padlocked doors! He calmed them down, saying, "Peace be with you!" Before Jesus' appearance they were anxious disciples. They had fallen back into a state of disbelief. After Jesus' appearance, they were reassured, equipped with the Holy Spirit, and launched on the most important mission anyone has ever heard about! Now, think about New Hope. The future is uncertain. The crowd is rather small at worship on many Sunday mornings. I imagine you feel anxious pretty often. What will the future look like for this congregation? It helps to remember what happened to that little fear-filled band of disciples on Easter evening and again a week later, when Thomas got his chance to see and touch the risen Lord. Every year, the church is filled with the renewing messages of Easter. We are reminded that our Christian service is for the Lord of Heaven and Earth. We do not walk into the future alone. We do not do our mission under our own power. We are filled with the power of the Spirit of God! I hope and pray that you will be energized by the Easter readings on Easter Sunday and in the whole season of Easter hope and joy! May the Peace of Christ be with you all! Pr. Norris 2
