This guide will help Pathfinders in this jurney f understanding scripture and living it. The chapter guides are nt cmprehensive. They d nt cver every detail f each chapter that wuld take a few hundred pages. Each chapter guide chses a few key pints t help Pathfinders start thinking differently abut scripture t get beynd memrizatin and n t internalizatin. This bklet includes guides fr each chapter featured in the 2014-2015 Pathfinder Bible Experience. Once Pathfinders have finished studying a chapter, yu can share the crrespnding chapter guide with them. Allw Pathfinders t answer questins verbally r by writing their answers in a jurnal and then discussing them with the grup. Abut the Pathfinder Bible Experience T he Pathfinder Bible Experience is a team based challenge that tests the grup's knwledge f sectins f scripture. Each year a new blck f scripture is assigned and excited Pathfinders cmmit t immersing themselves in thse passages f Gd's Wrd. Then in February, after mnths f study, they gather tgether with ther teams in their area t test their knwledge against a set f questins drawn frm the scriptures they have been cvering. If they answer a high enugh percentage f the questins crrectly, they advance t a cnference level event, then unin level, and finally a divisin level event, typically held in April. Each team cmpetes against a standard, and all wh perfrm t the designated percentage advance. Meeting tgether adds a sense f excitement and an additinal level f adrenaline that spurs participants n t higher levels f recall. Yet any and all can advance, based slely n their effrts. What abut Bible Bwl? There are dzens, perhaps hundreds, f Bible quiz prgrams ut there. Many f them are called Bible Bwl r sme frm f that name. There are clse t a dzen riginating in the Adventist Church in Nrth America alne. All ffer their wn unique methdlgies and guidelines, and have their wn dedicated leadership teams and fllwings. Hwever, The Pathfinder Bible Experience is the fficial NAD Pathfinder Bible quiz prgram. We like ur way. D we have t switch? NAD Pathfinder ministry des nt require that Pathfinder clubs, cnferences r unins in Nrth America use The Pathfinder Bible Experience as their mdel. They are welcme t cntinue with whatever prgram they have been using, r even cme up with a new ne if they s chse. In fact, if a club, cnference r unin chses t use anther mdel, they are still welcme t jin in with The Pathfinder Bible Experience. They wuld register t enter at the level abve where their mdel stps. The nly requirement is that the team must have cmpleted the prir level at the same percentage that The Pathfinder Bible Experience requires t advance. Please recgnize that if yu participate in a different mdel at lwer levels f play, yu will have t deal with varius disadvantages as the methd f play will be different. And f curse yu need t have studied the passages f scripture that are being used by The Pathfinder Bible Experience that year, r yu wuld be at a terrible disadvantage. Leaders f the three mst cmmn current mdels used by Adventists in Nrth America have agreed t crdinate the selectin f scripture t be cvered each year, s this shuld make it easier t crss ver if yu s chse. 6 The Pathfinder Bible Experience

Scripture Translatins English: New King James (Thmas Nelsn Pathfinder Editin recmmended) Spanish: Nueva Reina Valera 1995 (RU1995) French: Versin Luis Segnd en Français Scripture Cverage The NAD Pathfinder Bible Experience team will assign a bk, bks r sectins f bks f the Bible, ttaling between 40 and 50 chapters per year. The Pathfinder Bible Experience als includes the relevant intrductry text in the SDA Bible Cmmentary fr the scriptures cvered. Questins The questins fr each level f The Pathfinder Bible Experience will be distributed by the NAD Pathfinder Bible Experience Crdinatr t the apprpriate individuals at each participating cnference and unin. All questins are prepared by persns appinted by the NAD Pathfinder Directr. Questins are develped frm the Pathfinder Editin f the New King James Versin f the Bible and the latest editin f the SDA Bible Cmmentary bk intrductins fr the assciated scriptural passages. Less than 10% f the questins will cme frm the cmmentary. Questins are written t stand alne and be able t be answered individually. Mst require single wrd r shrt phrase answers. The Pathfinder Bible Experience des nt use multiple chice questins. There shuld be limited use f true and false questins. Questins shuld always include the scriptural reference. Team Requirements Teams are made up f tw t six Pathfinders frm a single club. Clubs may have multiple teams participate, s lng as each team has at least fur unique Pathfinders n each team. Teams shuld be as cmplete as pssible. Fr example a club wuld nt be allwed t field three teams f fur participants, but they culd field tw teams f six participants frm that club. Each team is cmprised f the fllwing: Tw t six currently enrlled Pathfinders in grades 5-10: A Team Captain A Team Scribe Up t fur additinal team members An alternate A nn-playing Cach Team Captain During play, it is the duty f the Team Captain t listen t the cnsultatin f the team and then tell the Team Scribe what answer t write. It is als the duty f the Team Captain t determine if the team wishes t challenge the decisin f their Grader after an answer is scred. Team Scribe During play, it is the duty f the Team Scribe t write the answer n the apprpriate answer card. They are t await the final decisin by the Team Captain befre they start writing. Alternate Each team is encuraged t have an alternate participant ready t fill in if a regular team member is unable t attend an event, r becmes ill during an event. The alternate may als switch ut with a regular team member at the intermissin f the game. A switch is nly allwed nce per team, per game. Cach A club staff member, pastr, r cmmitted parent acts as the team's Cach. Their rle is t crdinate training and t mtivate the team. Additinal adults are welcme t assist with training, but there shuld be ne fficial r chief cach per club in charge f crdinating the PBE effrts f the club. Unifrm Requirements All team members must be in full dress unifrm as described by the latest versin f the NAD Pathfinder Staff Manual in rder t participate at any level event. This unifrm nrmally includes: dress unifrm shirt with prper insignia, dress unifrm pants r skirt, authrized scks r stckings, authrized shes, Pathfinder belt, Pathfinder scarf and slide, and Pathfinder Sash. Bard Apprval As with all Pathfinder events, the church bard, r a bard-appinted bdy, must vte participatin apprval as well as acknwledgement f the specific event dates fr inclusin n the lcal church calendar. 8 The Pathfinder Bible Experience

Preparatin Decide t Participate Participatin in The Pathfinder Bible Experience shuld nt be made lightly r at the last minute. Fr yu t achieve the purpse f the event, the Pathfinders need t have made a serius cmmitment t Bible study. T be fair t them, this means an early start and thrugh preparatins. In September yu need t be encuraging participatin and prmting the event. Study shuld begin sn thereafter. Club staff are encuraged t use the selected scripture as a thematic fcus fr meeting wrships, utreach events and ther activities as this will help reinfrce the cntent, as well as cnnect nn-participating Pathfinders with thse wh are studying fr The Pathfinder Bible Experience. Practice Questins During the fall f the year, have varius individuals prepare practice questins cvering the sectins f scripture fr the year and the related bk intrductins frm The SDA Bible Cmmentary. Ask yur pastr, teachers, Sabbath Schl leaders, parents and regular church members. Yu might even arrange t share practice questins with ther clubs in yur area r cnference. Scripture Therefre, whether yu eat r drink, r whatever yu d, d all t the glry f Gd. 1 Crinthians 10:31 (NKJV) Sample Questin Q: Frm Acts 8:9, what was the name f the srcerer wh basted that he was smene great? There shuld be limited use f true and false questins. Questins shuld always include the scriptural reference. Reading and Memrizatin Each team member shuld read the full text multiple times. Many find it helpful t break the text int several blcks and have participants fcus n smaller sectins s that yu have tw specialists n each third f the material, but make sure that each ne cvers all f it as well. The age f Pathfinders allws them t be masters f memrizatin. While it takes lts f wrk, it is an extremely effective methd f preparatin fr the challenge. The Pathfinder Bible Experience 9

Listening t the readings can dramatically imprve a participant's recall abilities later. They can be played in a vehicle while traveling t a camput, r as a wrship, r even n headphnes while ding chres at hme r cmmunity service prjects with the club. The club culd als make their wn recrdings f the bk and share them amngst the team members. Dramatized versins are als available. These make it even mre interesting and the Pathfinders can then see the verses in their minds when the questins are asked. Practice Events During December and January, prvide several pprtunities fr the Pathfinders t practice against ther teams frm within the club r special practice teams made up f church members. Have the Pathfinders take turns acting as scribe and writing ut the answers. Yu may find that sme are mre skilled at this than thers. Meeting Frequency If the team is t truly succeed they will need t meet tgether mre ften than fr a few minutes during each weekly Pathfinder meeting. Mst tp teams will need t meet several hurs a week in the fall t study tgether, and tw r three times a week during January and early February. They will need t cntinue t meet a cuple f times a week if they want t cntinue in first place at mre advanced levels. Other Creative Ideas Encurage the team in fact, the entire club t read the assigned scriptures during private and family wrship. Enlist the help f the Sabbath Schl departments t play games and have activities that will cver the assigned scriptures. Have a mck event with the entire church. Team Selectin At sme pint in late fall, the Cach, in cnsultatin with the club staff and the interested Pathfinders, will need t establish specific team(s) that will participate. 10 The Pathfinder Bible Experience

The Prgram Registratin Frms All frms are available nline at pathfindersnline.rg click n PBE In early January the club shuld send their registratin frm t the lcal cnference. Yur cnference may determine a different way t register, r they may send yu the frm in the mail r as an e-mail attachment in late December r early January. Levels Play takes place at fur levels: area, cnference, unin, and divisin. After participatin in the lcal area event, all teams hlding a first place finish advance t the next level. After participatin in the cnference event, all teams hlding a first place finish advance t the unin level, and s n. That means that a team culd participate in up t fur different levels at fur different lcatins. Area Level Cnferences acrss the divisin use several different names and methds f dividing their territry int smaller gegraphic regins. Sme call them regins, sme federatins, sme sectins, but mst call them areas, s that is the term we use. Area level events bring tgether teams frm within a prtin f a cnference. Obviusly yu want at least tw teams and preferably mre in an area event. Ideally an area event wuld include tw t ten teams, but it is pssible t have mre. Within the cnference, there culd be as few as tw areas r many areas. Each team registers with the cnference. The cnference crdinates the running f area level events based n the number and lcatin f teams registered t participate. The cnference r a crdinatr arranges a venue fr each area level event. Ideally the lcatin wuld rtate ver the years t the varius churches in the area represented by the participating teams. This encurages church participatin and adds sme hme team spirit. Single team in an area In sme cases, there might nly be ne team participating frm an area in a cnference. If this is the case, then multiple areas shuld be cmbined s there are at least tw teams in the event. Disqualificatin Individual Disqualificatin A team member will be disqualified if they are nt wearing the cmplete dress unifrm r if they are nt in grades 5-10. Caches are t see that each team member is in prper unifrm. Team Disqualificatin Because the same questins are used in all areas, cnferences, and unins, teams are prhibited frm cmmunicating with ther teams in regards t any fficial questin being used and any level f The Pathfinder Bible Experience prgram that year. If this kind f cntact takes place and is discvered the team wuld be disqualified frm any further participatin and wuld frfeit all standings frm prir participatin that year. Each team member must sign an Integrity Pledge at each level affirming amngst ther things, that they have nt had usage f fficial questins except during the event itself. The Integrity Pledge is available nline. Pint Disqualificatin & Team Expulsin Any pints earned during play, while being cached, cmmented t, r prdded by an audience member thrugh any channel r methd will be revked. A secnd instance during the same day f play will result in the team being expelled frm play, and makes them ineligible t participate in any higher levels that year. Opening Exercises - 2:35 pm Prayer Pledge and Law Pathfinder Sng Sng Service (Optinal) - 2:40 pm Tw r three sngs Instructins - 2:45 pm The Quiz Master reviews the rules f play listed under Quiz Part 1. The rules shuld be prjected n the screen while the Quiz Master reviews them. They als review the grunds fr disqualificatin and expulsin as listed in the manual and remind them that n ne n the team may have any electrnic device n their persn during the event. Remind the audience and the teams that Christian decrum is expected f all present. Quiz Part 1-2:50 pm Half the questins will be asked during part 1. The first questin is prjected n the screen and the Quiz Master reads it twice. If the questin is wrth mre than ne pint the Quiz Master will annunce the pint value befre reading the questin. Fr example, Fr tw pints, name Adam's first tw sns. When the Quiz Master has read the questin twice, the Clerk starts the stp watch and runs it fr 10 secnds. During this time the team discusses and determines the answer. The Team Captain makes the final decisin and tells the Scribe what t write. At 10 secnds the Clerk will call time and the Team Scribe must write, withut hesitatin, the answer n the pre-numbered paper fr that questin. Answers may be written befre time is called. After an apprpriate pause f abut 3 secnds fr the Team Scribe t write the answer, the Quiz Master will change the slide and read the answer twice. A lnger pause wuld be made fr multipart answers. At this time the Grader will determine if the team crrectly answered the questin and writes the questin scre n the scre card and keeps a running ttal f the team's cmplete scre. If the team did nt have an answer decided when time was called, they d nt receive pints fr their answer. If the team feels that the Grader scred them incrrectly, they say t the Grader, Challenge. The Grader then takes the answer card and gives it t a Curier, wh walks the card t the Appeal Panel. The Appeal Panel Judges cnsider the answer and determine the final pint value f the answer, writing the scre n the card. Their decisin is final. N additinal appeal is allwed. The Curier then returns the card t the Grader wh adjusts the scre per the Appeal Panel instructins. Regular play cntinues while appeals are being made. Graders may nt refuse a challenge. 14 The Pathfinder Bible Experience

The Appeal Panel may deny a team the right t appeal if the team is felt t be challenging every wrng answer they submit. Hwever the Appeal Panel shuld be very cautius in their decisin t deny a team further appeals, just as the team shuld be reasnable in the frequency f their challenges. At the end f the half the Quiz Master annunces intermissin. The Grader writes in the ttal scre fr the half n the screcard. Intermissin - 3:35 pm 5 minutes During this time the Grader duble checks the running ttals. During intermissin, a team may chse t replace ne f their team members with their designated alternate. Quiz Part 2-3:40 pm The secnd half f the questins are asked. Play prceeds in the same manner as utlined in Quiz Part 1. At the end f play, the Grader writes the secnd half ttal n the scre card and als the ttal fr bth halves. The Grader duble checks the secnd half ttal and the final ttal. The Grader then takes the scre card t the Clerk. Devtinal (Optinal) - 4:25 pm A 10 minute devtinal based n the sectin f scripture that is being cvered. This als gives the Clerk time t finalize the awards. Offering (Optinal) - 4:35 pm The cllectin f an ffering is at the discretin f the PBE Crdinatr. If ne is cllected, the funds shuld be used t defray the expenses f the prgram r t prvide travel supprt t the teams mving n t the next level. Presentatin f Awards - 4:40 pm The PBE Crdinatr r the Quiz Master will present the awards earned during the event. Every team receives an award, as all are winners as the children f Gd. T lessen the cmpetitive spirit, exact pints are nt given r stated publicly during the prgram. Only the place standings are annunced. Standings are annunced by calling the clubs in alphabetical rder and stating their standing. It is PBE plicy that specific scres are never annunced r released. Each team receives a certificate f participatin. Each individual participant receives a PBE pin with the year and level. Variatins f NKJV There are at least tw different manuscripts fr the New King James Versin f the Bible. The variatins are minr and infrequent, but they d exist. Teams are encurage t bring alng the actual Bible with which they studied. Pathfinders shuld be encuraged t use the latest editin f the Pathfinder Bible. Persnnel & Their Duties Persnnel are appinted by the PBE Crdinatr fr the level at which they will be wrking. Fr example, the Cnference PBE Crdinatr wuld appint the Quiz Master, Clerk, Graders, Judges and Curiers fr the cnference level event. Quiz Master The Quiz Master acts as hst and MC fr the event, and reads the questins. They read each questin twice. It is recmmended that the PBE Crdinatr nt be the Quiz Master s that they may deal with issues that may arise during play. They can be the Yuth Directr, Cnference Pathfinder Directr, a Pastr, an Area Crdinatr r even a Lcal Pathfinder Directr. Clerk The Clerk, with the use f a stpwatch r ther technlgy, regulates the 10 secnd discussin perid while the team determines the answer that wuld be recrded. The time begins after the questin is read twice by the Quiz Master. The Clerk will call the end f time lud enugh fr all the participating teams t hear. The Clerk receives the cmpleted scre cards frm each Grader and tabulates final team standings. The Clerk is appinted by the PBE Crdinatr at each level. They shuld be an adult with n specific club affiliatin. Grader Each team needs an adult Grader. They must be frm a different club than the ne they are grading, and preferably nt affiliated with any club. The Grader's jb is t determine if the answer given by the team is crrect r nt. Once they have made the determinatin they recrd the scre. The Grader keeps track f the team s answer scre and cumulative scre n the team's scre sheet. At intermissin and at the end f the rund they will duble check the running ttal fr accuracy. PBE Crdinatr The persn respnsible fr The Pathfinder Bible Experience at each level is the PBE Crdinatr. At the area level this wuld nrmally be the Area Crdinatr r their designee. * At the cnference level this wuld nrmally be the Cnference Yuth Directr, Cnference Pathfinder Directr r their designee.* At the unin level this wuld nrmally be the Unin Yuth Directr, Unin Pathfinder Directr, Unin Pathfinder Crdinatr, their designee r a persn appinted t that rle by the Cnference Yuth Directrs in that unin. Specific issues f grading Accurate spelling is nt required, but the answer must be recgnizable. T assist with accurate grading, the answer sheet fr any questin that has three r mre pints shuld be given t the Grader while the answers are given by the Quiz Master s they can be checked ff ne by ne. The Pathfinder Bible Experience questins are nt multiple chice. Therefre, additinal answers given beynd the number requested are nt accepted. The team must crss ff any answer they d nt want in the list r the first answers will be the accepted nes. Direct qutes frm the Bible and fill-in-the-blanks must be exact wrds in the exact rder. Appeal Panel Judge Three adults serve as Appeal Panel Judges. Appeal Panel Judges determine the team's scre fr a grade they have challenged n a specific questin. Appeal Panel Judges shuld be individuals with biblical knwledge and a keen sense f fair play and justice. Pastrs, church elders r Bible teachers wuld be excellent candidates fr these psitins. The panel als meets ne hur befre the event t review the questins and cnfirm that they are as clear as pssible. If there is any change made in a questin, it must be mdified n the Judges printed questin list AND the electrnic file the Quiz Master uses. If tw languages are used, then there must be at least tw judges per language fr a ttal f fur judges. There culd be up t three judges per language. If three languages are used, then again there must be at least tw judges per language fr a ttal f six judges. There culd be up t three judges per language. Specific issues n judging Direct qutes frm the Bible with fill-in-the-blank answers must be exact wrds in the exact rder. The judges are t uphld the answers given by the Quiz Master fr each questin. If the answer is different than the ne given by the Quiz Master, it can nly be accepted if it is fund t be crrect in the printed versin f the New King James Versin, Nueva Reina Valera 2000, Versin Luis Segnd en Français and the SDA Bible Cmmentary bk intrductins. Curier In case f a challenge, a Curier walks the cntested answer sheet t the Appeal Panel Judges. The PBE Crdinatr will prvide a Curier fr every fur teams r fractin theref. Curiers can be nn-playing Pathfinders r Adventurers. Once the Appeal Panel Judges have made a decisin, the Curier will return the cntested answer sheet back t the team Grader fr grade updating. Sng Leader A Sng Leader, pianist, guitarist, r praise team t lead a shrt sng service at the beginning f the event.
