Gotta Love It When A Plan Comes Together (II Samuel 3-5) Danny Hodges OT3542 2 Sam 3-5 Read 3:1 The war between the house of Saul and the house of David lasted a long time. David grew stronger and stronger, while the house of Saul grew weaker and weaker. Spiritually Saul is a symbol of sin and self David is a symbol of our savior There is a war going on in my soul that will last a lifetime o However the house of saul, House of self, house of sin will grow weaker and weaker o Kingdom of God will grow stronger Setbacks along the way but my God who began a good work in me knows how to complete it ------------------------------------------------------------------------- 2 Sam 3:2-11 2 Sons were born to David in Hebron:His firstborn was Amnon the son of Ahinoam of Jezreel; 3 his second, Kileab the son of Abigail the widow of Nabal of Carmel; the third, Absalom the son of Maakah daughter of Talmai king of Geshur; 4 the fourth, Adonijah the son of Haggith; the fifth, Shephatiah the son of Abital; 5 and the sixth, Ithream the son of David s wife Eglah. These were born to David in Hebron. 6 During the war between the house of Saul and the house of David, Abner had been strengthening his own position in the house of Saul. 7 Now Saul had had a concubine named Rizpah daughter of Aiah. And Ish- Bosheth said to Abner, Why did you sleep with my father s concubine? 8 Abner was very angry because of what Ish-Bosheth said. So he answered, Am I a dog s head on Judah s side? This very day I am loyal to the house of your father Saul and to his family and friends. I haven t handed you over to David. Yet now you accuse me of an offense involving this woman! 9 May God deal with Abner, be it ever so severely, if I do not do for David what the LORD promised him on oath 10 and transfer the kingdom from the house of Saul and establish David s throne over Israel and Judah from Dan to Beersheba. 11 Ish-Bosheth did not dare to say another word to Abner, because he was afraid of him. P.2 David married Macaah, daughter of a Canaanite King. Product of that marriage will be a man named Absalom o Break Davids heart and divide the kingdom o Do not be unequally yoked.it ll break your down the road

David had 3 wives but adds more and more The story gets worse and worse David s ways will influence Solomon who will outdo David with 700 wives and 300 concubines Dt 17:17 The King must not take many wives, or his heart will be led astray. He must not accumulate large amounts of silver and gold. In those days, when a man took another man s concubine he was saying I m taking over now. That s why Absolom will be advised to sleep openly with David s in Chapter 15 That s how Abner was strengthening himself ------------------------------------------------------------------------- 2 Sam 3:12-21 Then Abner sent messengers on his behalf to say to David, Whose land is it? Make an agreement with me, and I will help you bring all Israel over to you. 13 Good, said David. I will make an agreement with you. But I demand one thing of you: Do not come into my presence unless you bring Michal daughter of Saul when you come to see me. 14 Then David sent messengers to Ish-Bosheth son of Saul, demanding, Give me my wife Michal, whom I betrothed to myself for the price of a hundred Philistine foreskins. 15 So Ish-Bosheth gave orders and had her taken away from her husband Paltiel son of Laish. 16 Her husband, however, went with her, weeping behind her all the way to Bahurim. Then Abner said to him, Go back home! So he went back. P.3 17 Abner conferred with the elders of Israel and said, For some time you have wanted to make David your king. 18 Now do it! For the LORD promised David, By my servant David I will rescue my people Israel from the hand of the Philistines and from the hand of all their enemies. 19 Abner also spoke to the Benjamites in person. Then he went to Hebron to tell David everything that Israel and the whole tribe of Benjamin wanted to do. 20 When Abner, who had twenty men with him, came to David at Hebron, David prepared a feast for him and his men. 21 Then Abner said to David, Let me go at once and assemble all Israel for my lord the king, so that they may make a covenant with you, and that you may rule over all that your heart desires. So David sent Abner away, and he went in peace. David demands Macaah be brought to him in a similar political power play as Abner and Ishbosheth Abner tells the Elders of Israel, you ve been wanting to make David your king,..now do it That is the message. you ve been wanting to give King Jesus everything, do it now. Don t settle for living in the land of Philistines, aka the world..don t just give Him Hebron, part of you,.give it all, now ---------------------------------------------------------------------- 2 Sam 3:22-39 Just then David s men and Joab returned from a raid and brought with them a great deal of plunder. But Abner was no longer with David in Hebron, because David had sent him away, and he had gone in peace. 23 When Joab and all the soldiers with him arrived, he was told that Abner son of Ner had come to the king and that the king had sent him away and that he had gone in peace. 24 So Joab went to the king and said, What have you done? Look, Abner came to you. Why did you let him go? Now he is gone! 25 You know Abner son of Ner; he came to deceive you and observe your movements and find out

everything you are doing. 26 Joab then left David and sent messengers after Abner, and they brought him back from the P.4 cistern at Sirah. But David did not know it. 27 Now when Abner returned to Hebron, Joab took him aside into an inner chamber, as if to speak with him privately. And there, to avenge the blood of his brother Asahel, Joab stabbed him in the stomach, and he died. 28 Later, when David heard about this, he said, I and my kingdom are forever innocent before the LORD concerning the blood of Abner son of Ner. 29 May his blood fall on the head of Joab and on his whole family! May Joab s family never be without someone who has a running sore or leprosy [a] or who leans on a crutch or who falls by the sword or who lacks food. 30 (Joab and his brother Abishai murdered Abner because he had killed their brother Asahel in the battle at Gibeon.) 31 Then David said to Joab and all the people with him, Tear your clothes and put on sackcloth and walk in mourning in front of Abner. King David himself walked behind the bier. 32 They buried Abner in Hebron, and the king wept aloud at Abner s tomb. All the people wept also. 33 The king sang this lament for Abner: Should Abner have died as the lawless die? 34 Your hands were not bound, your feet were not fettered. You fell as one falls before the wicked. And all the people wept over him again. 35 Then they all came and urged David to eat something while it was still day; but David took an oath, saying, May God deal with me, be it ever so severely, if I taste bread or anything else before the sun sets! 36 All the people took note and were pleased; indeed, everything the king did pleased them. 37 So on that day all the people there and all Israel knew that the king had no part in the murder of Abner son of Ner. No love loss between Joab and Abner since Abner killed Asahel, Joab s brother in the last chapter After a lifetime of fighting against David Abner is instrumental in bring many to David. Great picture of someone who has been an enemy of the cross their whole life and joyfully bringing many to Jesus as they find their way to Him P.5 Chapter 4 gives details of Ishbosheth demise as 2 of Sauls leaders come into his house and stab him in the stomach They cut off his head and bring it to David announcing here is the head of your enemy 2 Sam 4:9-12 David answered Rekab and his brother Baanah, the sons of Rimmon the Beerothite, As surely as the LORD lives, who has delivered me out of every trouble, 10 when someone told me, Saul is dead, and thought he was bringing good news, I seized him and put him to death in Ziklag. That was the reward I gave him for his news! 11 How much more when wicked men have killed an innocent man in his own house and on his own bed should I not now demand his blood from your hand and rid the earth of you! 12 So David gave an order to his men, and they killed them. 2 Sam 5:1-4 All the tribes of Israel came to David at Hebron and said, We are your own flesh and blood. 2 In the past, while Saul was king over us, you were the one who led Israel on their military campaigns. And the LORD said to you, You will shepherd my people Israel, and you will become their ruler. 3 When all the elders of Israel had come to King David at Hebron, the king made a covenant with them at Hebron before the LORD, and they anointed David king over Israel. 4 David was thirty years old when he became king, and he reigned forty years. 5 In Hebron he reigned over Judah seven years and six months, and in Jerusalem he reigned over all Israel and Judah thirty-three years. Conclusion: In 1 Sam 16 David is anointed over Israel as a teenager

In 2 Sam 2 David is anointed King over Hebron, a small portion of Israel he is now 30.Jesus 30 when He began In 2 Sam 5 David 37, finally anointed king over all of Israel P.6 What makes David hold on to God s promise: o Anointed king as a teenager Saul was the peoples king, David is the Lord s king Don t remember Samuel saying giving him a timeline 1 St taken into Saul s service to play for him to drive Spirit of God had departed from Saul But the spirit of the Lord was upon David w/ power Defeats Goliath / Saul is Jealous Marries Machal, king Saul s daughter Sucessfully leads campaigns against Philistines Saul determined to Kill David Escapes to the Cave of Adullam w 300 followers The distressed, indebted, and discontent Hunted like a dog by Saul Always running for his life, trying to live off the land Twice could have killed Saul Finally says I ve had enough Goes and lives in enemy territory and there is no record of David inquiring of the Lord until The Amalekites burn Ziklag to the ground And take everything David and his men had It was actually easier to live in Ziklag.expound Farm Food Raiding parties Safe from Saul Phil Army Would have fought with Philistines against Saul.Jonathan Except God s sovereign Grace, dismissed David s army, Ziklag was burned, but David shaken to his sense seeks the Lord. Shall I go after the Amalekites, Lord said Go After some time He inquires about going to Hebron o They anoint him King o 16, 17 years is along time to wait for the promise to be revealed P.7 David s not the only one Think of Joseph o What is it inside of Joseph, that gives him hope against hope as he holds onto the dreams god gave him as a child Tell Joseph s dreams The Pit, The Potipher, The Predicament, The Prison, The Prime Minister God uses him to save his family & bring them to Egypt Tells his brothers Moses

o What is it in Moses that causes him one day to turn aside and talk to a burning bush, and that ignites a flame in him that had been on pilot for 40 years Despite all his objections there was a total surrender He will jump back into the fray, the danger, the vulnerability of walking intensely with God Longing for his voice to instruct, or clarify, To encourage, and direct To once again marvel at God s provision, miraculous intervention, and sovereign grace What about us. Don t have to be a David, or a Joseph, or a Moses Phillipian Jailer, o Cornelius the centurion, The guy carry the pitcher of water that showed them where the room was to eat the last supper What adventure awaited them that took years to develope P.8 If you have truly understood by revelation that you re a sinner and Christ went beyond anything you could ask or dream of to rescue you from sin..this relationship with God cannot be undone..he is forging it David s journey wasn t w/o wonderful times of victory and the presence of the Lord He played a mean guitar, Became more and more famous and beloved by the people as he won battle after battle Found a once in a lifetime friendship w/ Jonathan Joseph gained great favor with whoever he worked for Moses had sheep Consider these three things inside God s Sovereignty 1. God s relentless pursuit of sinners, 2. God s ability to create in us desire for Him / Ps 63 3. God s perspective / In Christ 1 God s relentless pursuit of sinners, Ps.139:7 Where can I go from your Spirit? Where can I flee from your presence? 8 If I go up to the heavens, you are there; if I make my bed in the depths, you are there. 9 If I rise on the wings of the dawn, if I settle on the far side of the sea, 10 even there your hand will guide me, your right hand will hold me fast. Why? Rom 11:29 God s gifts and his call are irrevocable. EXAMPLE: Ever have a sabbatical with the Philistines P.9 Business crashed / I was out of meaningful fellowship

I was in a financial hole / Not the paper towels God used it to draw me to himself I cried out to him / I didn t trust any of my words Our Father,.. / Started journaling Daughter saved / Life Group Gwin and Carol, God speaks / Gwin saved, marriage God spoke to me, disciple him next day help me w/ Bible Senator Calibration / Linvatec, god speaks thru Gwin The flame was reignited, the back burner promise was at the forefront of my mind again 2 God s ability to create in us desire 4 Him / Ps 63 Ps. 63 You, God, are my God, earnestly I seek you; I thirst for you, my whole being longs for you, in a dry and parched land where there is no water. I have seen you in the sanctuary and beheld your power and your glory. 3 Because your love is better than life, my lips will glorify you. 4 I will praise you as long as I live, and in your name I will lift up my hands. 5 I will be fully satisfied as with the richest of foods; with singing lips my mouth will praise you. 6 On my bed I remember you; I think of you through the watches of the night. Because you are my help, I sing in the shadow of your wings. 8 I cling to you; your right hand upholds me. We were born in the image of God, and although ravaged by our sin nature God placed good works in us that He would bring to fruition in us. 3 God s perspective / In Christ Lk 22:28 You are those who have stood by me in my trials. And I confer on you a kingdom, just as my Father conferred one on me, 30 so that you may eat and drink at my table in my kingdom and sit on thrones, judging the twelve tribes of Israel. James and John will get their mother to ask Jesus Who is the greatest Sleeping, when Jesus asks them to watch and pray All desert him when taken into custody Peter vehemently denies that He will deny him You might be thinking Yahoo I can say what I want & Live how I want to.. Still get my eternal reward It s unconditional love!!!. Rather it s God s sovereign grace of placing us in Christ

1 Cor 1:30 It is because of him that you are in Christ Jesus, who has become for us wisdom from God that is, our righteousness, holiness and redemption. Eph. 1:13 And you also were included in Christ when you heard the message of truth, the gospe of your salvation. When you believed, you were marked in him with a seal, the promised Holy Spirit, Rom 8:1-8 Therefore there is now no condemnation for those who are in Christ Jesus. 2 Cor. 5:17,18 Therefore if anyone is in Christ he is a new creation. The old has gone, the new is come! 18 All this is from God Eph 2:6 And God raised us up with Christ and seated us with Him in the heavenly realms in Christ Jesus, Eph 2:10 For we are God's handiwork, created in Christ Jesus to do good works, which God prepared in advance for us to do. Eph2:13 But now in Christ Jesus you who once were far away have been brought near by the blood of Christ. Phil 2:12 Therefore, my dear friends, as you have always obeyed not only in my presence, but now much more in my absence continue to work out your salvation with fear and trembling, 13 for it is God who works in you to will and to act in order to fulfill his good purpose. Phil. 3:10 Paul declares, I want to know Him, and the Power of His resurrection, and the fellowship of sharing in His suffering Put another way in Mt 10 & 11, Jesus has just talked about taking up our cross and following Him and then says. Come to me all you who labor and are heavy laden and I will give you rest. Take my yoke upon you and learn from me, for I am gentle and humble in heart, and you will find rest for your souls. 30 For my yoke is easy and my burden is light. No It s not! Comparative, unyoked and plowing in.. Jesus is going to use this broken world to mold us into what He has made us to be
