Session title: HOLY SPIRIT AIMS To reinforce the Trinity. To explore who Holy Spirit is and His purpose. To experience transformation in His presence. TERM 1: Session 4 - Holy Spirit 1/6

MEMORY VERSE GAME 1 THOSE WHO SPEND TIME IN GOD S PRESENCE, ARE TRANSFORMED INTO HIS IMAGE, BIT BY BIT, THROUGH THE HOLY SPIRIT. 2 CORINTHIANS 3:18 (PARAPHRASED) Split the youth into teams and give them a box of lego each. Give each team five minutes to construct a model of a steam train using the lego in their box. The best model wins. INTRODUCTION CATCH UP (10 mins) Refer to the teaching notes for guidance on how to run this time. Over the past three weeks we have been thinking about how water, ice and steam are the same thing. Each is different in its own way and yet it s still water. These things have been helping us understand that God exists in three different ways like water: ice reminded us of God and water reminded us of Jesus. (Use Appendix 1 PowerPoint slides, or if you don t have projection, print them off on A3 so the whole group can see the pictures. Have someone hold them as you talk.) This week we are going to use steam to remind us of the Holy Spirit. We are going to think about who Holy Spirit is and what He does in our lives. Run video clip: Super heated steam experiment https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=r9uvihgvz04 TERM 1: Session 4 - Holy Spirit 2/6

TALK DISCUSS You can see from this video steam is really powerful. It can move 900 tons of metal at speed in a steam engine! That s 129 elephants. The Holy Spirit is God s power inside you 1 and He is our connection to God. He is our helper, He brings comfort and most importantly He transforms us: 2 Corinthians 3:18 says, Those who spend time in God s presence, are transformed into His image, bit by bit, through the Holy Spirit. How easy is it to change a bad habit or negative behaviour? Would someone helping you to change make a difference? Why do you think we need to be transformed? Why would 2 Corinthians 3:18 say we are transformed bit by bit (from glory to glory)? Could it be we are on a journey and we change day by day? Time spent in God s presence is the secret to this change and transformation. So if we want to change, to become more like Jesus in our actions we simply need to spend more time in God s presence. The change in our lives becomes a by-product of time spent with Him. One reason I want to be transformed by God to be a better and better reflection of Him is so that others will see Christ in me. They will see his love and compassion in me and because of that it will trigger in them a desire to know God. When the Holy Spirit turns up in Acts two things happen: let s take a look at the bible. 1 2 Timothy:1:7 TERM 1: Session 4 - Holy Spirit 3/6

BIBLE STORY (10 mins) RESPONSE (10-15 mins) Read Luke 24:36-49 together What does Jesus tell the disciples to do? Jesus tells his followers to wait. They are to wait before they try and go out into the world. Could this be because going on our own without God s presence just doesn t work? Read Acts 2:1-42 together. So the disciples wait as Jesus tells them to, in Jerusalem. As Jesus promised God sends Holy Spirit and amazing things happen, everyone starts to speak in different languages and Peter tells Jesus story with such power that 3,000 people give their lives to follow Jesus. It doesn t seem from the story like Peter had to try hard to get that speech out, it just flowed. Telling others about Jesus became easy for him. TESTIMONY Invite someone to come and speak who can explain how the Holy Spirit helped set them free from some sort of addiction or helped them to speak to others about Jesus. Or give a testimony from your own life. In Galatians 5:22-23, the bible says that having the Holy Spirit inside you means you will love more, be filled with joy, peace, patience and kindness, that you will be faithful, gentle and self-controlled. Have a think, is there anything you have been struggling to change? Where do you need the Holy Spirit s help? Or have you wanted to tell people about Jesus and found it difficult? The Holy Spirit can help us if we let Him. Holy Spirit, as we quieten down ourselves and focus on you in this moment, come and show each of us some aspect of us that you want to work on. (Wait and give time for Him to work in the young people.) Holy Spirit come now and fill us with more of you. Increase in each one of us and start to work on transforming our hearts and minds for you Lord. Simply spending time with the Holy Spirit is enough to transform you, even if there s nothing you think you want to work on. All we have to do is choose to let God into our hearts by asking Him to fill us with His presence. We can help each other to do that too. Let s split up into pairs and pray for each other to be filled with more of the Holy Spirit. If you haven t prayed with someone before, I will talk you through it. Firstly, introduce yourselves to each other so you know your names. Ask if it s ok to put a hand on their shoulder. We do this because Holy Spirit is already present in us and as we touch them we are already sharing some of God s presence in us with that person. Then simply say, Holy Spirit come and fill Jack with more of you. Then wait and let Holy Spirit come and do His stuff. The other person will usually have their eyes shut and you can watch and see what God does as He fills them with his presence. Once they open their eyes, swap over. TERM 1: Session 4 - Holy Spirit 4/6

REFLECT AND SHARE GAME 2 (10 mins) What did God do? Do you feel something has changed in you? What did it feel like to pray for someone else to be filled, did you feel anything as you prayed? Remember we don t all feel, see, hear or know God is in the room or in us in the same way. It can be different for each one of us. Trust that God is here. Sometimes you will just know in your heart or your head that something had changed or that something is different because of the prayer. At other times you ll have seen something in your mind or had thoughts you d never imagined. Or something else may have happened that just convinces you God has been at work. We don t rely on feelings alone, some things settle in us through the words in the Bible and that s just as valid as any other way of experiencing God. This is a building challenge for your young people. Split them into small teams of no more than 3 people. Provide each team with the materials listed in the resources section. Then have them build a rubber band car this is one link you could use with suggested instructions on how to build the car: http://pbskids.org/designsquad/parentseducators/ resources/rubber_band_car.html If you have time left, have them race the finished cars against each other. ACTION (3 mins) We ve thought today about things we would like to do differently. It may have been there s a habit you wanted to change or that you wanted to tell others about Jesus more easily. As you go about your week take time each day to ask God to show you what he is doing to help that change take place. Record what happens each day. Hand out a copy of Appendix 2 to each young person. Remember we learnt that Holy Spirit makes change happen bit by bit so see what each bit adds up to by the end of the week. If you are happy to share it bring it with you to next week s meeting and tell us what God did. TERM 1: Session 4 - Holy Spirit 5/6
