INTRODUCTION TO QUR AN CIT Y Rabb! Build for me a house with You in Janna 66:12 The Qur an encourages investment in real estate in Janna. It is with this encouragement that we decided to teach the structure of the Qur an through building a city with bricks. The word sur means an enclosure also referring to the defensive wall built around a city. With 114 buildings, Qur an City is divided into 14 quadrants which circle Muhammad City Centre and has a road network called M14* that links all the quadrants with each other. The heights of the buildings represent the number of ayaat of the suwer and can be distinguished as Makki or Madani through their roof tops Yellow for Makki and Green for Madani. There are 86 Makki buildings and 28 Madani buildings. *Representing the 14 Ma sumeen who are the necessary guidance to navigate Qur an City. Join us in our quest of discovering the awesomeness of the Qur an through Qur an City The placement of the buildings in the quadrants are based on the names and/or opening of the suwer. The 14 quadrants which circle MUHAMMAD CITY CENTRE are: 1. BOOK CLOSE 2. HAAMIDAAT PLACE 3. MUSABBIHAAT PLACE 4. HURUFUL MUQATTIAAT AREA WHICH IS SUB DIVIDED INTO: a. SINGLES CLOSE b. THE CITY WALL Qur an City is surrounded by a wall which has the heart. This is the first word and order to seventeen entrances including one main gate. humanity revealed from Divinity. This one The entrances represent the seventeen units word changed the world. In response to this of daily salawat (Pl of Salaa). Salaa introduces one command, the Qur an became the most the human being to the Qur an and ensures printed, used and reproduced book in the that it is recited five times a day. world giving birth to entire libraries. The main gate is inscribed with the word IQRA in the context of Qur an City extends to IQRA READ/RECITE. Reading is from 5 things: Read, Memorise, Understand, Apply a parchment or book, whilst reciting is from and Teach. THE ROAD NETWORK M14 A road network is imperative to be able to navigate a city. For Qur an City, the road network is M14 representing the teachings a prophet Muhammad pbuh and his progeny. The example is like the London taxi drivers who go through stringent training to obtain their licence. They need to pass The Knowledge, a test which is amongst the hardest to pass in the world. It has been described as having an atlas of London implanted into your brain. The Ma sumeen are the living Qur an with its knowledge implanted in their being. 5 Qur an City

BOOK CLOSE The gates open into Book Close. The Alaq answer how the Qur an was 4 suwer in this quadrant all relate revealed in the Cave of Hira. WHEN? directly to the Qur an. This is where Suratul Qadr answers when the it all started. The first five ayaat Qur an was revealed. WHO? Suratul revealed were those of Suratul Alaq Furqan highlights the qualities of those (96) on the night of Qadr (97). The who rejected the Qur an and those Qur an is Furqan (25) that which who accepted it. WHAT? Suratul distinguishes between right and wrong Bayyina clarifies what the Qur an is a and Bayyina (98) a clear evidence. It clear evidence. This sura is placed in therefore answers the four questions between Book Close and Muhammad of How? When? Who? What? in City Centre for it emphasises that relation to the Book. the book is part and parcel of the HOW? The first five ayaat of Suratul messenger and vice versa. MUHAMMAD CITY CENTRE In the centre of the city we have placed Suratu Muhammad (47). When planning Madina, the Prophet pbuh had the mosque Masjidun Nabi as the focal point of religious, intellectual and socio political life. The sura is also known as Suratul Qital The Sura of Battle. On its side we have placed Suratul Hujurat (49) which related to the living quarters of the Prophet (pbuh). In close proximity is Suratul Dahr/Insan (76) which focuses around the charity of the house of Fatima & Ali pbut. In Madina their house was the only one besides the Prophet s whose door opened into the mosque. Near this is Suratul Kawthar (108) revealed in reference to Sayyida Fatima pbuh and her progeny when the Quraysh called the Prophet abtar one without progeny after his son died. As this centre revolves around the Prophet pbuh we have placed Suratu Taha (20) and Suratu Yaseen (36) in the city centre too. Both these are titles given to the Prophet pbuh and are placed near the edge of Muhammad City Centre crossing into the Huruful Muqatta at Area. Suratu Yaseen (36) is also known as the heart of the Qur an. 6 Qur an City

In the city centre is a square called NIDA SQUARE. NIDA is calling out. 5 suwer begin with a direct address to the Prophet pbuh. Suratul Ahzab (33), Suratul Talaq (65), Suratul Tahreem (66), Suratul Muzzammil (73)*, Suratul Muddaththir (74)*. *In these two suratayn, the Prophet is addressed by the titles of Muzzammil The wrapped one and Muddaththir The cloaked one. Every city needs its source of energy and therefore we have placed Suratul Nur (24) in the city centre. In a corner of the city we have created VICTORY SQUARE which is populated with Suratul Fath (48) and Suratul Nasr (110). And finally Suratul Inshirah (94) which partnered with Suratudh Dhuha (93) in the adjacent QASAM CLOSE consoles the Prophet pbuh, giving Him the encouragement to continue his mission. 7 Qur an City

HURUFUL MUQATTA AAT AREA Muqatta at are unique letter combinations that appear in the beginning of 29 suwer of the Qur an. The word Muqatta aat is derived from the word qata a meaning to cut abbreviate. They are also known as fawātih or openers as they form the opening ayaat of their respective suwer. Fourteen letters exactly half of the 28 letters of Arabic are found in 14 different combinations occurring singly or in combinations of 2,3,4 or 5. We have placed 2 of these suwer in Muhammad City Centre, Suratu Yaseen (36) & Suratu Taha (20). One in Women s Retreat, Suratu Maryam (19) which begins with Kaaf Haa Yaa Ain Saad. 8 Qur an City

The rest are as follows: SINGLES CLOSE These 3 suwer begin with a single letter. They are Suratu Saad (38), Suratu Qaaf (50) and Suratul Qalam (68). They are Suratul Baqara (2), Suratu Aali Imran (3), Suratul Ankabut (29), Suratu Rum (30), Suratu Luqman (31), Suratul Sajda (32) and Suratul A raf (7). HAWAAMEEM PLACE Known as the crown and most decorative suwer of the Qur an, these suwer were revealed in Makka in sequence. The chronological and arranged order is the same. The emphasis is on tawheed and each ends with forgiveness. They are Suratul Ghafir/Mu min (40), Suratul Fussilat/Haa Meem Sajda (41), Suratul Shu ara (42), Suratul Zukhruf (43), Suratul Dukhan (44), Suratul Jathiya (45) & Suratul Ahqaaf (46). CRESCENT CLOSE This quadrant is near Ra aat Place as 2 of the suwer are Ambiya related Suratul Ambiya (23) and Suratu Nuh (71). Suratul Qamar (54) from which the name of the quadrant comes is placed here as it shares an opening with Suratul Ambiya Iqtaraba to approach or go near. MUSABBIHAAT PLACE These 7 suwer begin with Tasbeeh Glorification, in essence declaring God of any imperfection. Suratul Israa (17), Suratul Hadeed (57), Suratul Hashr (59), Suratul Saff (61), Suratul Jumua (62), Suratul Taghabun (64) and Suratul A laa (87). We are told that the Prophet pbuh made it a habit to recite these suwer before he slept at night. O you who believe! Remember Allah, remembering frequently. And glorify Him morning and evening. 33:41,42 10 Qur an City Whoever says: Praise is due to the Lord of the worlds at dawn four times, has thanked Allah for that day and whoever repeats the same in the evening, has thanked Allah for the night. Prophet pbuh

QASAM PLACE 17 suwer of the Qur an begin with oaths, where God swears by various aspects of creation. An oath is normally used to convince the listener about the truthfulness and/or importance of what one is saying. In this case the speaker is Divinity who is Truth itself; therefore the oath is making a focus on the subject that it is swearing by and its following ayaat. Arabs used to swear on random objects to draw the attention of people. The suwer are Suratul Saffaat (37), Suratul Dhaariyaat (51), Suratul Tur (52), Suratul Najm (53), Suratul Qiyama (75), Suratul Mursalat (77), Suratul Naaziaat (79), Suratul Buruj (85), Suratul Tariq (86), Suratul Fajr (89), Suratul Balad (90), Suratul Shams (91), Suratul Layl (92), Suratul Dhuha (93), Suratul Teen (95), Suratul Aadiyaat (100), & Suratul Asr (103) Suratul Dhuha (93) and Suratul Inshirah (94) form a pair and therefore we have placed Suratul Inshirah near Qasam close across the road so it can be with its partner. QIYAMA CLOSE These are some of the suwer that depict a vivid picture of the day of Qiyama. These are: Suratul Waqia (56), Suratul Haqqa (69), Suratul Ma arij (70), Suratul Naba (78), Suratul Takweer (81), Suratul Infitar (82), Suratul Inshiqaaq (84), Suratul Ghashiya (88), Suratul Zilzal (99) & Suratul Qaria (101) 11 Qur an City

THE 4 CORNERS QUL CORNER These are the 5 suwer which begin with the command AMR of SAY! Qul. They are Suratul Jinn (72), Suratul Kafirun (109), Suratul Ikhlas (112), Suratul Falaq (113) and Suratul Naas (114). The two suratayn Al Falaq and Al Naas are known as Maudhatayn and form a pair. KA BA CORNER The 3 suwer here pertain to the Ka ba. Suratul Quraysh (106) refers to the obedience to the Rabb of the house Ka ba and Suratul Feel (105) to those who came to destroy it. Suratul Quraysh and Suratul Feel are also a pair. Suratul Hajj (22) is directly linked to the visitation to the Ka ba. WOMEN S CORNER All the 4 suwer whose name reflect femininity are grouped here. These are Suratul Nisa (4), Suratu Maryam (19), Suratul Mujadila (58) and Suratul Mumtahana (60) EXILED CORNER We have exiled 7 suwer whose names signify negative traits. These are: Suratul Munafiqun (63), Suratul Abasa (80), Suratul Mutaffifeen (83), Suratul Takathur (102), Suratul Humaza (104), Suratul Ma un (107) & Suratul Lahab (111) 12 Qur an City

TAWBA TURN Immediately outside Exiled Corner is Tawba Turn which signifies the ability to make a U turn towards righteousness if one so wishes. The 2 Suratayn here are Suratul Anfal (8) and Suratul Tawba (9). These are also paired, as some scholars say that as there is no Basmala in Suratul Tawba it signifies it as an extension of Suratul Anfal. KINGDOM PLACE The final quadrant depicts the concept of Ownership (Kingdom) in the form of mnemonic. The Rahman (55) grants the Kingdom (67) to the Believers (Mu minun) (23) by Blessing (another name for Suratun Nahl) (16) them in being Companions of Janna (Zumar) (39). KAAMIL CLOSE At the far end of the City, this sura represents the last of the revelations of the Qur an. Aya 3 in Suratul Maida (5) revealed in Ghadir Khum after the appointment of Imam Ali pbuh as his successor. This day I have perfected for you your religion and completed My favour upon you and have approved for you Islam as your religion. 13 Qur an City
