As we draw toward the end of the liturgical year, the Gospel also reminds us that history is moving toward its final course. We Christians believe that Jesus Christ will come again to complete the victory inaugurated by his death and resurrection. This return is to be heralded by cosmic turbulence, which should be taken as signs of the upcoming renewal. If we have been living well the ongoing period of waiting, the reunion with the Lord is sure to be a joyful one. If we have been wasting time, then now is the chance to reform and make up for the lost moments. Since the exact day of the Lord s return is a knowledge reserved to the Father, our waiting must always be marked by readiness to meet the Lord anytime. Our Lady of the Rosary Page 6 Little Italy, San Diego, CA Background of the Liturgy Thirty-Third Sunday in Ordinary Time This Sunday and next Sunday, our Gospel will be taken from the last of the five great sermons in Matthew. This Sunday we have the parable of the talents. Next Sunday we shall have the Last Judgment scene. The Gospel parable is intended to show that the Lord has given us many and unequal talents. He expects a return on his investment in us, regardless of how little we may think we have received. Lord gives. The Church uses industry, zeal, and ingenuity in spreading the faith intensively and extensively. This ties in well with the parable of the talents. When Judgment Day comes, the Lord will not ask us whether we saved our souls or whether we were in a state of grace by not committing mortal sins. The basis of our judgment will be how we saw him in every person and situation and how we treated him. The Master will settle accounts on judgment Day. The basis of judgment is whether we worked to make his gifts and talents grow or whether we kept them to and for ourselves. Different translations of the Gospel render talent variously. The original Greek is talent but sometimes it is given as huge amount or silver pieces. The talent was a measure of weight, brit there was no universal standard. An old Greek lexicon says that a talent of silver would be worth between $1,080.00 and $1,625.00. Figuring the rate of inflation, the amount would be much greater today. The meaning of the parable is that the Lord expects us to grow in his grace. He expects a return on his investment in us. If we keep everything to ourselves, we shall lose out. But one might easily understand why the servant buried his amount: Banks were almost nonexistent. If an invader overran a country, a deposit in a bank would be worthless. It might seem better to bury the money and give it back entirely to the master on his return. Usually the first reading and the Gospel have a common theme. But it seems rather far-fetched to see a connection between the Gospel and the first reading today. In his very first sermon (on the Mount) Jesus told us that we were called to be perfect as our heavenly Father is perfect. He told us that we were to be the light of the world and the salt of the earth. In his last sermon in John, he told us that we are called to love as he loves us. If we love the Lord with all our heart, soul, mind, and strength, we dynamically serve the Lord and use the talents and gifts to build up his kingdom on earth. The second reading is near the conclusion of First Thessalonians. Paul has solved their worry about the precedence in the Second Coming. He now says that no one knows when the Second Coming will happen. This means no one. We must avoid the mistake of thinking that our life (and this world) will last forever. We must equally avoid the mistake of thinking that the end is right around the corner because of signs. This is the last Sunday when we shall wear the green vestments of Ordinary Time. Next Sunday is the Solemnity of Christ the King. The following Sunday is the First of Advent, and the beginning of Year B. Next Sunday s Gospel will be the last judgment scene. This Sunday leads to it: Use everything in your life to show your love and service of the Lord. The first reading is about the valiant woman who works hard and is respected by her husband for her industry. We might see an allegorical meaning here: The woman is the Church. The Church is supposed to use the gifts and talents which the

To be modestly and tastefully dressed is a sign of respect for God, for our selves, and for others. It s a false assumption that God does not care how we dress. Jesus told us, Whatever you do to the least of my brothers, you do it to me. If our attire is indecently provocative (short shorts, strapless, backless, spaghetti strap dresses/ tops, or displaying cleavage), displaying unwholesome graphics (skulls, advertisements, scantily clad people) or tattered, it becomes offensive to our brothers and sisters who are worshipping the Lord and therefore offensive to God s Majesty. Ask this question: Would you dress this way before God? You are! He sees everything and you are in His house.
