COURSE PLAN METHODOLOGY: COURSE PLAN SAINT JOHN PAUL II Saint John Paul II by Susan Helen Wallace, FSP is represented by the abbreviation. Each weekly assignment is summarized in the first line of the week s daily course plan. The specific daily assignments are outlined in the following lines indicated by the 1, 2, 3, and 4 abbreviations. The written assignments may be done on Thursday or over the weekend, but are due on Monday. We suggest assigning the weekly written assignment at the beginning of the week. COURSE PLAN WEEK 1 Book Weekly Breakdown Goals and Notes for the Week Notes Prayer Page 105 Chapter 1-11 Read the prayer on p. 105. Review the vocabulary words with the student prior to reading. If any are unfamiliar, have the student look up the vocabulary words in the glossary. You may want to have the student write each one in a sentence. Study questions may be completed as the student reads or at the end of the week when reading has been completed. Student Daily Assignments Parent Daily Guidelines 1 Chapter 1-3 Have the student read the Prayer on p. 105 and Chapters 1-2 and answer Study Questions. Chapter 1. Lolek. World War 1 was finally over and Poland had regained its independence after 123 years of foreign occupation. Karol and Emilia Wojtila were very happy to have given birth to a new son whom they named Karol. They gave him the nickname Lolek. He was born on May 18, 1920. He was baptized by Father Franciszek Zak, a military chaplain on June 20. Edmund, their older son, was fourteen years older than Karol and his nickname was Mundek. They were a happy family. The father was a retired army officer who was a good person, Emilia was a good mother, and Mundek was a good son. Emilia wondered what kind of a person Lolek would be. She was sure he would be a great man. Chapter 2. Life with the Captain. Lolek was happy to begin school with his Jewish friend Jerzy. When Lolek was in third grade his mother died, which made the boy very sad. His father told him she was in heaven and was watching over them. His brother was already in the university but came home as often as he could. Mr. Wojtla was often called the Captain because he had been in the army for many years. Mr. Wojtla made sure to communicate well with Lolek. He organized a routine for them and taught Lolek many things about religion, Polish history and culture, and taught him to speak German. Lolek s friend Jerzy often joined in the classes with his father. Mr. Wojtyla set an excellent example for his sons by his way of life and practicing the Faith. Chapter 3. Another Cross to Bear. Mundek was an outstanding medical student and was not able to spend as much time with Lolek and his father as he would like. As a doctor he was practicing in a hospital closer SSJ2

COURSE PLAN 2 Chapter 4-7 to home and was able to see them more often. He realized Lolek loved to act and had him perform for the patients. Mundek contracted scarlet fever and died at twenty-six old. Lolek and his father were heartbroken but consoled each other by finding their strength in God. Lolek prayed to God asking him to give His Mother to comfort them. As a high school student Lolek was a serious student and continued acting. When Archbishop Adam Sapieha visited the school Lolek was chosen to give a welcoming speech. The Archbishop was impressed and asked Father Zacher if Lolek had a vocation. The priest said he didn t think so, which the Archbishop thought was a pity. Have the student Chapters 4-7 and answer Study Questions. Chapter 4. Darkening Clouds. Discrimination against Jews was growing in Poland while Lolek and Jerzy were in high school. Acts of terrorism were perpetrated against them, which was a great concern for Jerzy, his father, and Lolek and the Captain. After graduation from high school Lolek attended the Jagiellonian University in Krakow where he and his father moved. Lolek, now called Karol, enjoyed studying, belonging to a theater group, and his new friends. He grew in his faith at the same time. He was aware of the troubling political situation and sensed the trouble coming. Many people distrusted Germany s leaders and were afraid of what could happen. Chapter 5. Changed Forever. On September 1, 1939 when Karol was in his second year at the university, Germany invaded and took control of Poland. Soon Jagiellonian University was closed and the professors were arrested. The Nazis passed laws to punish the Poles who resisted them. They rationed food, and clean water was scarce. Karol realized the Nazis were trying to destroy their Polish identity and it was up to the young Poles to preserve their culture. He met Jan Tyranowski a tailor who introduced him to Carmelite spirituality. Karol became devoted to Our Lady of Mount Carmel while reading about Saint John of the Cross and Saint Teresa of Avila. He taught himself Spanish to aid him in reading the saints. He and other young Poles had to take jobs of manual labor or be sent to a German work camp. Karol worked in a stone quarry and scavenged food on the way home to feed himself and his father. One day he returned home to find his father had died, which was a terrible blow to him. It was after that he began to realize more deeply how much his religion meant to him and wondered if he had a vocation. Chapter 6. Decision. In May of 1941 the Germans began arresting priests in Poland. This really worried Karol who realized that without the priests there would be no Mass or sacraments so he began to SSJ3

COURSE PLAN 3 Chapter 8-11 pray more earnestly. He was transferred to a chemical plant by the Germans where the conditions were a little better. Polish plant managers tried to give breaks to make it easier on them. Karol used his free time to read, study, think, and pray. The older decent men working in the plant helped Karol and the other college students by trying to be helpful. He never forgot their charity and when he became Pope he wrote an encyclical letter on the value and dignity of human work. By the fall of 1942 Karol went to Archbishop Sapieha and told him he wanted to enter the seminary and become a priest for which he would have to live a secret life. Chapter 7. Going Underground. Because the Nazis had forbidden the Church from accepting new seminarians and had even arrested and killed some of them, Karol had to go underground. On his way home one evening, Karol was hit by a truck. A woman, Mrs. Florek, jumped off a streetcar and ran to help him. A German officer came to help. They got him to the hospital. He had a brain injury, cuts, and bruises but recovered in two weeks. He never forgot the kindness of Mrs. Florek, the officer, and the hospital staff. Soon after a seminarian was arrested and shot by the Nazis. Archbishop Sapieha had all of the seminarians come to live in his home to continue to study secretly. He got Father Figlewicz to get the Polish managers at the chemical factory to start a rumor that Karol had disappeared. He remained in hiding with the Archbishop until the war ended and the German troops left Krakow in January 1945. Seven million Poles had died and three million of them were Jews. The Soviets took over so Poland was still not free. Karol was ordained on November 1, 1946 and went to study in Rome with Father Starowieyski. Have the student Chapters 8-11 and answer Study Questions. Chapter 8. In the Heart of the Church. Father greatly enjoyed his time in Rome. He felt at home in the heart of the Church. He realized the Italians had also suffered from the war but were moving on, and he realized they were optimistic and prayed Poland would come to enjoy freedom like theirs.. He was assigned to help out at St. Francis Xavier Church and liked being among the people. After he received his degree in theology, Cardinal Sapieha paid for him and Father Starowieyski to tour France, Belgium, and Holland. He thought it would be a great learning experience for them. He then went back to Rome to continue his studies and had to write a thesis before he could finish the program. He had no money to publish it but trusted in God. Chapter 9. Home Again. Back in Poland, Father Wojtyla was assigned to the Church of Our Lady of the Assumption in a SSJ4

COURSE PLAN small village whose pastor was Father Buzala. It was a poor parish and the rectory had no central heating, indoor plumbing, electricity, or water, but he did not mind that he was as poor as the parishioners. He prayed to St. John Vianney, the patron saint of parish priests. He received the wonderful news that the Jagiellonian University accepted his Roman studies and he received his doctoral degree in theology. He was assigned to give religious education to grade school children in five schools, which he loved. He also heard many confessions, celebrated weddings, and baptized babies. When it came time to celebrate Father Buzala s fiftieth anniversary as a priest, he got the people to agree to build a new church, and amazingly, they were able to do it. Chapter 10. To Krakow. Cardinal Sapieha called Father Wojtyla to Krakow and told him he wanted him to become pastor of Saint Florian s Parish in Krakow to be chaplain to students of three of Krakow s schools. He worked at being caring and approachable to the students and so drew them close to him. He organized courses for engaged couples and taught them respect for life and the sacredness of human love. His classes grew because he encouraged people to ask questions and discuss the Church s teachings. The young people liked the new priest but were challenged by his vocabulary. He started a choir and the students found out he had a very good voice. He invited them to attend his 6:00 am Mass and wondered if any would come. He prayed a long time about it. Chapter 11. Uncle Karol. It surprised Father Wojtyla when students came to his 6:00 am Mass. A small group of students also gathered around the priest for prayer, socializing, conferences, and discussions and felt like they were a family. The Communist government in Poland forbade priests to work with youth groups so he told the students they couldn t call him Father in public. He suggested they call him Uncle, so he became uncle to them. It was against the law for a priest to go on vacations with young people, but Father did it anyway. He went to the mountains with young married couples and young singles for skiing in the winter and hiking and camping in the summer. He even learned kayaking. He celebrated Mass in the open air. The young people were attracted to him and came to him asking for advice, to go to confession, and for counseling. He always found time for praying. SSJ5

Notes Student Daily Assignments Parent Daily Guidelines 1 Chapter 12-14 Have the student Chapters 12-14 and answer Study Questions. Chapter 12. Poland s Youngest Bishop. The Communist government in Poland did not think Father Wojtyla was a threat because they didn t know the effect he was having on the young. Cardinal Sapieha died and Archbishop Eugene Baziak replaced him in Krakow but the Communist government refused to acknowledge him. Father Wojtyla became a university professor and encouraged the students ask him questions. One of his students, Stanislaw Dziwisz became a priest and years later became the secretary of Pope John Paul II. When he was only 38 years old, Father Wojtyla was named a bishop by Pope Pius XII; he was the youngest Polish bishop. His motto was Totus Tuus which means totally yours. Pope John XXIII announced he would begin the Second Vatican Council and before it began, Archbishop Baziak died. Bishop Wojtyla was named temporary leader of the archdiocese until a new archbishop could be appointed by Rome. The local government announced that it was going to take over a seminary. Bishop Wojtyla went to the government, defended his rights, and agreed to let them use only one story of the three story building. Chapter 13. A Miracle and Back to Rome. Bishop Wojtyla s friend, Dr. Wanda Poltawska, a wife and mother, had cancer and asked the Bishop to pray for her. He sent a request to Padre Pio for her and she was completely cured. Years later as Pope John Paul II, he canonized Padre Pio. Bishop Wojtyla went to Rome to attend the Second Vatican Council, which was a pastoral council, not a doctrinal one. Bishop Wojtyla spoke to the Council about changes to the liturgy. During the Council Pope John XXIII SSJ7

COURSE PLAN 2 Chapter 15-17 became ill and died. The Cardinals elected a new Pope who took the name of Pope Paul VI. Bishop Wojtyla took a pilgrimage to the Holy Land then went back to Rome to work on the documents. On December 30, 1963, Pope Paul VI named Wojtyla the Archbishop of Krakow. He took another pilgrimage to the Holy Land before the next session of the Council convened. He kept the people of Poland informed about the Council. Chapter 14. Surprise Reunion. Archbishop Wojtyla s old friend, Jerzy Kluger who was now an engineer in Rome, saw an article in the newspaper about Archbishop Wojtyla being in Rome and went to see his childhood friend. They had a good visit. When the Second Vatican Council ended on December 8, 1965 Karol went back to Krakow to teach everyone about the documents of the Council. In June of 1967 Pope Paul VI named Karol a Cardinal. As Cardinal Wojtyla he worked with his priests and his people as well as writing books that helped people know about God s goodness and his great love for His people. He also consecrated two auxiliary bishops to help him in his work. Have the student Chapters 15-17 and answer Study Questions. Chapter 15. A Shepherd s Heart. Cardinal Wojtyla made a pilgrimage to Rome with all of the Polish priests who had been prisoners of war of the Nazis in Dachau, Germany. Many priests died in the concentration camp. He realized that although he had a hard time during the war, it was not nearly as bad as the priests had it. Cardinal Wojtyla visited every parish in Krakow. He helped the priests knowing it was not easy to be a priest with Communists running the country. He made sure children were learning the Faith by teaching them in their religious education classes in the parishes. Pope Paul VI died on August 6, 1978, and the Cardinal went back to Rome to help elect a new Pope. Cardinal Albino Luciani was elected and took the name of Pope John Paul I. Surprisingly, Pope John Paul I died in his sleep just thirty-three days he died in his sleep. Chapter 16. From a Faraway Country. Cardinal went back to Rome to help elect a new Pope. On October 16, 1978, much to his surprise, Cardinal Karol Wojtyla was elected to be the new Pope. He chose the name of Pope John Paul II and placed all of his trust in God and the Blessed Mother. Most of the people waiting in Saint Peter s Square had never heard of him, but Father Stanislaw Dziwisz knew him. He was the new Pope s secretary. The Pope addressed the people in fluent Italian. The people in Poland were very excited that one of theirs was the Pope. However, the Communists were not happy about it. Chapter 17. On the Move. Many heads of states and diplomats came to see the new Pope, SSJ8

COURSE PLAN 3 Chapter 18-20 and then he invited friends to come. His friend Jerzy Kluger came to see him with his wife and children as well as other friends. John Paul II went out to visit shrines in Italy and to see the people; everyone was impressed by him. He accepted an invitation from Mexico and flew there in January 1979. It was in Mexico City that people first shouted out, John Paul Two, we love you! In October of 1979 he went to Boston where over two million people gathered in cold and rainy weather. Everyone came to love him. Have the student Chapters 18-20 and answer Study Questions. Chapter 18. Secret Escape! The Pope had always loved skiing and arranged to sneak out of the Vatican with Father Stanislaw and two other priests. The two other priests rode in the front seat and the Pope and Father Stanislaw sat in the back. The got out without the Swiss Guards realizing the Pope was in the car and went skiing in the Apennine Mountains in Italy. The Pope loved doing this and over the years they did it over a hundred times with the Pope in disguise. One day a little boy recognized him, and when the Italian government found out, they insisted that he go under guard for his protection. Chapter 19. All to All. Pope John Paul II had the third longest papacy in history. During that time he visited 129 countries. He was more well-known than anyone during his lifetime. On May 13, 1981 a man named Ali Agca shot the Pope when he was riding in an open jeep. He was seriously injured but did recover. The day of the assassination attempt was the feast of Our Lady of Fatima, and the Pope gave Mary credit for protecting him. After he was healed he went to the prison and forgave Ali Acga for trying to kill him. As Pope, John Paul wrote fourteen encyclicals teaching his people. The Gospel of Life was one of his most important encyclicals because it teaches about the sacredness of all human life. He also taught about God s mercy and that we should not be afraid of God. Do not be afraid was a message he repeated often. He called synods in which bishops from around the world would meet with him in Rome. Chapter 20. The Father s House. The Holy Father canonized more saints than any Pope in history. He declared the Great Jubilee of 2000 to commemorate the 2,000 th anniversary of the birth of Jesus. He began World Youth Day where he would gather with young people in a different country every two years. This brought many young people into the faith or strengthened it. As his health began to fail he did not lose his enthusiasm and love for life. After several other illnesses he developed Parkinson s disease and became frailer. During his life he saw Poland become free from Communism and the fall of the Berlin SSJ9

She was a young wife and mother who had been diagnosed a serious cancer. She was worried about her family and her patients and asked Bishop Wojtyla to pray for her. He sent a request to Padre Pio to pray for her and when she went for tests before surgery, the doctors found that the cancer was completely gone. Bishop Wojtyla knew that Padre Pio had performed a miracle for her. Later, as Pope John Paul II, he canonized Padre Pio. Option2. Write a good paragraph about the attempted assassination of Pope John Paul II. Answers will vary but should include some of the following: Pope John Paul II was in an open-air car when Ali Agca shot him twice. Father Stanislaw was in the car with him and held on to him. The Pope was seriously injured but remained calm and prayed. He underwent surgery in the hospital and did recover over a period of time. The shooting happened on the Feast of Our Lady of Fatima and the Holy Father who had great devotion to Mary said that she was the one who saved him. After he was well, the Pope went to the prison to visit Ali Agca and told him he forgave him. SSJ12
