The West Side Presbyterian Church 10th Sunday after Pentecost Sacrament of Baptism August 13, 2017 10:00 am Service For a thousand years in Your sight are like yesterday when it is past, or like a watch in the night. You sweep them away; they are like a dream, like grass that is renewed in the morning; in the morning it flourishes and is renewed; in the evening it fades and withers. -Psalm 90:4-6 So teach us to count our days that we may gain a wise heart. -Psalm 90:12 And the fact the dead are raised Moses himself showed, in the story about the bush, where he speaks of the Lord as the God of Abraham, the God of Isaac, and the God of Jacob. Now He is God not of the dead, but of the living; for to Him all of them are alive. -Luke 20:37-38 For the law of the Spirit of life in Christ Jesus has set you free from the law of sin and death. -Romans 8:2 For to me, living is Christ and dying is gain. -Philippians 1:21

~ The Preparation for the Word ~ PRELUDE Chorale Prelude on St. Denio Percy Whitlock *CALL TO WORSHIP and OPENING PRAYER Jesus Christ is risen from the dead. Praise the Lord; our Redeemer lives! Jesus Christ is coming in glory. Praise the Lord; our Savior reigns! Let us pray: Living God of all the ages, Your love defies death and Your covenant is sure. Make us children of the resurrection so that we may celebrate with You and with all of Your beloved ones at the marriage feast in the age to come; through Jesus Christ, who lives in glory with You and the Holy Spirit, now and always. Amen. *HYMN OF PRAISE 263 Immortal, Invisible, God Only Wise ST. DENIO CALL TO CONFESSION PRAYER OF CONFESSION Sovereign God, we confess that we have not turned away from sin. We are quickly shaken in our faith and deceived by false prophets. We put our hope in this life only and deny Your gift of resurrection. Forgive us, God of grace. Give us true hope and real comfort. Strengthen us in word and deed to proclaim the new life You offer; through Jesus Christ our Lord. 2 * The congregation may stand (time for silent confession)

Before the mountains were brought forth, or ever You had formed the earth and the world, from everlasting to everlasting You are God. You turn us back to dust, and say, Turn back, you mortals. For a thousand years in Your sight are like yesterday when it is past, or like a watch in the night. You sweep them away; they are like a dream, like grass that is renewed in the morning; in the morning it flourishes and is renewed; in the evening it fades and withers. *HYMN (see insert) Be Still, My Soul FINLANDIA PRAYERS OF THE PEOPLE and THE LORD s PRAYER (hymnal page 16, using debts/debtors) The Lord be with you. Worship Values, Practices and Information Congregational participation is the hallmark of Reformed Worship. Hymns, responses, corporate prayers and readings belong to you, the people and express the voice of the individual and the larger body of the Church. We hope the following notes will help you to join us in our liturgy. An asterisk (*) indicates the congregation may stand. Boldface type signifies congregational participation. First and final stanzas of hymns are usually sung in unison, middle stanzas in parts. Share your prayer concerns on the cards provided in the pew rack. Ushers will collect the cards during the announcements. Those arriving after the Call to Worship begins will be seated during the next hymn or the passing of the peace. If you must leave the Sanctuary during worship, please wait in the Narthex until the next hymn, the passing of the peace or the doxology before returning to your seat. Please help us protect and care for our beautiful worship space. Food and beverages, with the exception of closed plastic water bottles, are not allowed in the Sanctuary. Please turn off your cell phone and pager before worship begins. Large print bulletins and hymnals are available in the Narthex. Assistive listening devices are available by contacting one of the ushers. Throughout the Sanctuary, there are a number of spaces available for wheelchairs. An usher will be happy to direct you. Video of the service is available online at www.westside.org. We have live streaming video on Sunday mornings. In case of emergency: our AED Unit is on the wall across from the reception desk and the First Aid kit is in the closet across from the reception desk. 7
