January 12, 2014 The Baptism of the Lord Join Us for Mass: Mon-Fri 10 am Sat 8 am & 5 pm Sunday 9:00 & 11 am website: www.saintmark-mn.org email: parishcenter@saintmark-mn.org 651-645-5717 2001 Dayton Ave - Saint Paul, MN 55104 A Strong Family United in Christ Christ: Servant of God A Strong Family Story It is necessary and healthy to insist upon a fundamental truth as we do in the Catholic Church: Jesus is the Son of God. Even though this is a central truth, it doesn't exclude other possible truths that also come from Holy Scripture and are also very helpful for our understanding of the mystery of Christ. Of all the truths about Jesus, today we are going to focus on one: Christ as Servant of God. Let s start from this foundation: to proclaim the Lordship of God also means that we proclaim our condition as servants of Him. What is a lord without servants? Is there anything more ridiculous than a lord who doesn't have anyone who listens to his orders or pleases him with their actions? If we take seriously that God is Lord, we also need to take seriously that we are His servants. This is the message of Jesus: He showed in His words and deeds that He is the true Servant of God. He always showed that God reigns... In other words, He let us see the kingdom of God. In the first reading today, Isaiah presents one angle of the servant of God to us. Out of all the characteristics that the prophet mentions, let's stop and focus on one, or if you want, on the combination of two of them: compassion and strength. Isaiah writes "a bruised reed he shall not break," but at the same time, "he establishes justice on the earth." Jesus understands those who are tired, but He Himself doesn't get weary; He welcomes those who have fallen, but still maintains His own position and mission. What admirable virtue that we see shine in Jesus. Continued on Page 2 Fr. Humberto Palomino, P.E.S. He says: I joined the parish in 2010 after graduating from the University of St. Thomas with degrees in finance, economics and theology. My wife Shannon and I were married at St. Marks in June 2012, and we were blessed with a baby boy on July 8, 2013. Our son Thomas was baptized at St. Marks last September. I work at Best Buy as a Demand Forecast Lead, and recently finished my fourth and final season as an assistant coach for the St. Thomas women's volleyball team. Shannon works at St. Thomas as a graphic designer. We are both involved in the St. Marks young adults group and have a weekly adoration hour. We enjoy serving in the Mass as well, myself as an usher and Shannon as a lector. We love being part of this strong and growing St. Marks family. All God s children are welcome to this sacred place and liturgy. The Catholic understanding of Holy Communion as the very Body and Blood of Jesus Christ limits the reception of the Holy Eucharist to those who share our faith and are united in discipleship within the life of the Church. Our brothers and sisters of other faiths are invited to come forward to receive a blessing at this time. Please indicate the desire to do so by crossing arms over the chest.

Page 2 January 12, 2014 Spiritually Speaking - continued from page 1 The Annointed One What is unique about Jesus? Our culture is shaped with new mythologies of heroes like Sherlock Holmes, James Bond, the Gladiator, Braveheart, 300, Bourne, etc. The culture is searching for new kinds of success in particular strengths, such as a very fine intelligence, the mastery of the use of technology, MUSCLES, valor... Are these strengths what make Jesus unique also? This feast of the Baptism of the Lord leads us to the heart of the answer: what is unique about Jesus is the Anointing that He has received. This is a simple proposition, but it brings with it immense consequences. If the uniqueness of Jesus is some of the "particular strengths" mentioned before about today s heroes, then to be a Christian would mean to obtain those strengths as a priority before everything else. Do we want to replicate and copy what pagan Greeks considered role models: the adventures of Achilles or the wisdom of Ulysses? Do we want to promote the Hollywood lie of the "Da Vinci Code," which strengthens the idea that Christianity is based on being trained in mysterious knowledge, and that the Church is always working hard to hide and keep covered its secrets and lies from the world? This would imply that the Church is a human creation. Actually, what is unique about Jesus is the Anointing of the Holy Spirit. This is the same Spirit who comes to live in us. To be Christian basically means to participate in the same Spirit of Jesus. This, in fact, is very similar to what St. Paul teaches: "For those who are led by the Spirit of God are children of God" (Romans 8:14). Brothers and sisters, everything in us is in relation to the Holy Spirit, and the first one who has inaugurated this way for us is Jesus. Lord, thank you for this time to be with you. I believe in you. I believe that you are here with me and that you want to speak with me today. I wish to open my heart to hear your word, and put it into practice out of love for you. Lord, help me to grow in the virtue of humility. Lord, thank you for the gift of yourself. Teach me to be humble. It is hard for me to put others ahead of myself, to take second place, to let others win the praise and glory I crave for myself. Help me to be humble and to seek repentance from all sin in my life. I need your help to do your will. Strengthen and guide me in your service. Saint Mark s Annual Gala Save the date for the annual Saint Mark s School Gala on Saturday, February 22, 2014. Page 3 The Baptism of the Lord Pastoral Care Ministry The Keystone Food Shelf is a lifeline for struggling families. Most are employed in low-paying jobs that offer few or no benefits and little stability. Keystone supplies basic needs in difficult times, offering food, information and referral services, emergency assistance and the assurance that someone cares. Some of the clients say: If it were not for Keystone, my family and I would have very little food in the house. My husband is very sick. I had to quit my job to care for him. The help I get from the food shelf helps greatly. Everyone has always treated me with dignity and respect. As many of you are aware, I help to coordinate our efforts to bring food items into the Keystone Food Shelf. I am asking for volunteers to give an hour one day a week, or once a month (most likely on Monday morning after the 10:00am Mass or any other weekday) to load my car with the grocery bags from Sunday Mass donations. Once the food is taken to the food shelf, volunteers from Keystone help me to carry in the bags. Those of us who never worry about where our next meal is coming from need to help feed our hungry brothers and sisters! Please continue to make your generous donations during the Offertory at the 9:00am Sunday Mass, and call me at the parish office if you are able to help load the food during the week. Bless you! Judy Miske Human Dignity Ministry There are several upcoming opportunities to pray for an increased respect for all human life: Night of Prayer for Hope, Healing and Mercy, from 7:00am to 7:00pm on Jan 21, at St. Mary s Chapel at UST.
