Rev. Lawrence F. Kolson, Pastor lkolson@archbalt.org esus came to Nazareth, where he had grown up, and went J according to his custom into the synagogue on the Sabbath day. He stood up to read and was handed a scroll of the prophet Isaiah. He unrolled the scroll and found the passage where it was written: The Spirit of the Lord is upon me, because he has anointed me to bring glad tidings to the poor. He has sent me to proclaim liberty to captives and recovery of sight to the blind, to let the oppressed go free, and to proclaim a year acceptable to the Lord. Rolling up the scroll, he handed it back to the attendant and sat down, and the eyes of all in the synagogue looked intently at him. He said to them, Today this Scripture passage is fulfilled in your hearing. Luke 4:16-21 Rev. Paul J. Breczinski, Associate Pastor pbreczinski@archbalt.org Deacon Frank R. Ashes will be blessed and given during Mass. Ways to Grow Spiritually during Lent Bishop Robert Barron's daily Lent reflections: When you sign up, Bishop Barron will e-mail you a new reflection each day during Lent. Last year, these Lenten reflections were read by over 275,000 people each day. Visit http:// www.lentreflections.com/ Best Lent Ever: Each day you will receive an inspirational e-mail with short videos from Matthew Kelly or a member of the Dynamic Catholic team. During the 40 days of Lent, they will share simple ways to bring Jesus into your everyday life. To learn more or sign up, visit DynamicCatholic.com/BestLentEver. Regulations For Lenten Fast and Abstinence Fasting, almsgiving, and prayer are the three traditional disciplines of Lent. The faithful and catechumens should undertake these practices seriously in a spirit of penance and of preparation for Baptism or of the renewal of Baptism at Easter. Fasting is to be observed on Ash Wednesday and Good Friday by all 18 years of age and older, who have not yet celebrated their 59 th birthday. On a fast day one full meal is allowed and no meat is to be taken. Two other meatless meals, sufficient to maintain strength, may be taken according to each one s needs, but together they should not equal another full meal. Eating between meals is not permitted, but liquids, including milk and juices, are allowed. Abstinence is observed by all 14 years of age and older. On days of abstinence no meat is allowed. Note that when health or ability to work would be seriously affected, the law of fast and abstinence does not oblige. Ash Wednesday, all the Fridays of Lent and Good Friday are the days of abstinence from meat. Note: If a person is unable to observe the above regulations due to ill health or other serious reasons, other suitable forms of self-denial are encouraged. 2016 Archbishop s Annual Appeal Next weekend at parishes across the Archdiocese of Baltimore, parishioners will be asked to pledge support to the 2016 Archbishop s Annual Appeal, A Light Brightly Visible. Ministries supported by the Appeal include the Office of Religious Education, which provides oversight and assistance to our Religious Education program, and Catholic Charities, where almost one quarter of all funds collected are used to support programs like My Sisters Place, Our Daily Bread Employment Center as well as the Food Bank of Western Maryland. In advance of next weekend, please prayerfully consider how you will support the 2016 Archbishop s Annual Appeal. Making a pledge, which can be paid in month installments through December 31, 2016, is a powerful way to maximize your contribution. For more information on the 2016 Archbishop s Annual Appeal or to pledge online, please visit www.archbalt.org/appeal. Thank you for your prayers and support.

God is an abundantly generous provider, and has a room waiting for each of us in heaven. Let s not be the reason why someone s heart is left unaware of the home God has waiting for them. Now, we are all not made to be great evangelists. You might not feel comfortable asking to pray with strangers, or feel adequately catechized enough to preach the Gospel. That s ok. There is something you can do. Consider buying a few holy cards to keep in your wallet or purse. That way, when you come across a homeless person, you can offer them not only food or money, but also spiritual food and motivation. Offer the homeless food and shelter, but also offer the homeless the Kingdom of God. Pray: Dear Jesus, shine through me and be so in me that every soul I come in contact with may feel your presence in my soul. Let them look up and see no longer me but only Jesus. (From Radiating Christ prayer) Dynamiccatholic.org Practical Suggestions for Sheltering the Homeless help neighbors care for their homes and do repairs support and/or volunteer at a homeless shelter support and/or volunteer for charitable agencies who care for the homeless, build homes, and provide support in the wake of natural disasters advocate for public policies and legislation that provide housing for lowincome people consider becoming a foster parent Wisdom from Our Holy Father When the world slumbers in comfort and selfishness, our Christian mission is to help it rouse from sleep. ~Pope Frances, @Pontifex Year of Mercy Events Don t miss the Year of Mercy Series! A colleague claims that all truth is relative. I believe that there are objective truths but am at a loss as to how to refute her. A. If all truth is relative, then there is no objective truth and nothing can ever be posited as fact including your colleague s statement that truth is relative. Such a stance equals chaos and voids all logical communication. Fr. What matters in life is not doing something, but allowing oneself to be loved [When I was pregnant with my third child,] at the twenty-week ultrasound, I found out that we were expecting a boy In this same visit, the doctor found that the baby had severe malformations. Follow-up tests led to a diagnosis of Trisomy 18 a chromosomal syndrome described as non-compatible with life. The day we learned our son was not well, my husband and I chose to name him Matteo, which in Hebrew means gift of God. With every day that Matteo grew in my womb, so grew my desire to meet him alive and to baptize him. Matteo was born on a spring day, weighing just under three pounds, and crying faintly. With the priest still on his way to the hospital, my husband baptized Matteo with holy water from Lourdes. After the baptism I asked the nurse to wash and dress him. Father arrived and anointed Matteo with chrism. We held Matteo in our arms as he went peacefully to heaven, having lived less than two hours. We are certain that Matteo is in heaven, and to know this is the greatest gift for a parent. Matteo taught us that what matters in life in not doing something, but allowing oneself to be loved. ~Monica Canetta, writing in the January 2016 issue of Magnificat Rachel s Vineyard Retreat February 26-28 Let the Church always be a place of mercy and hope, where everyone is welcomed, loved, and forgiven. -Pope Francis.
