The Parish of the May 28, 2017 Pastor ~ Rev Michael Schramel Parochial Vicar ~ Fr. Thomas Akowuah Parochial Vicar ~ Fr. John Vu We are one in the Spirit, We are one in the Lord. The youth have a chant; God is good with the response; all the time! It has been and honor and privilege that God has granted me a call to lay ecclesial ministry for many years these last 9 years with His people at the Parish of the Holy Family. When my husband, daughter and I first began attending Holy Ghost, early 2008, I was struck by the generosity and graciousness of the people then doubly blessed to have been hired as the Liturgy Coordinator in August of the same year. Sebastian retired three years ago and has now asked that I join him; retirement for me will begin July 6. Plans, we have a few, the most exciting is a month in Italy, spring, 2018. I have long hoped to experience the richness of Holy Week and Easter in his hometown, Caltanissetta, Sicily. I ve journeyed with all of you through clustering and merging and a beautiful journey it has been of course, not without some bumps along the way no pain, nothing gained, as they say. I am grateful, beyond words to all who have partnered with me serving the Lord and the people of our parish. Our parish staff is a wonderful group of people, to be sure, but our volunteers are our lifeline. Ecclesiastes 3:22 also states, So I saw that there is nothing better for a person than to enjoy their work, because that is their lot. For who can bring them to see what will happen after them; and enjoy, I have. Happily, Craig Kemp has accepted my position; he will transition from part-time to full-time status as the Music/Liturgy Coordinator. May God continue to richly bless the work of our parish and all of you! WHAT IS PENTECOST SUNDAY AND WHY DO WE CELEBRATE IT? When the day of Pentecost came, they were all together in one place. Suddenly a sound like the blowing of a violent wind came from heaven and filled the whole house where they were sitting. They saw what seemed to be tongues of fire that separated and came to rest on each of them. All of them were filled with the Holy Spirit and began to speak in other tongues as the Spirit enabled them. Acts 2:1 4 Happy birthday to the Catholic Church! Happy birthday to you, who are the body of the Church! The word Pentecost is Greek and it means "50th day." Fifty days after Easter Sunday, we celebrate the coming of the Holy Spirit upon the Apostles and their followers, and the beginning of their Earthly ministry to make disciples of all nations. Pentecost is also a Jewish holiday, which the Jews use to celebrate the end of Passover. Jews celebrate the gift of the law to Moses at Mt. Sinai on this day. But we, as Catholics celebrate the birth of our Church. At Pentecost, the Apostles and their followers were gathered in a room. Jews from all over the world were gathered with Peter, the leader of the Apostles and the Eleven. At this time, a great wind blew and a flame appeared as a tongue of fire, which split itself into many individual flames above the heads of all those present. The Holy Spirit came upon these people and each began to speak in tongues. Despite the fact many had no common language, they were perfectly able to understand one another. Others who were not so blessed, accused those speaking in tongues of being drunk, but Peter arose and addressed the crowd, explaining that it was only 9 o'clock, and that this phenomenon was not intoxication, but rather this was the work of the Holy Spirit, prophesized in the scripture. Peter then called all those present to be baptized and about three thousand people were baptized that day. These people were among the first Catholics, and Peter is the first pope of the Catholic Church. The symbols of Pentecost are the flame, wind, and the dove, which represents the Holy Spirit. The color of Pentecost is red and the priest wears red vestments on this day. Parishioners are also invited to wear red on this day. Red decorations as well as celebrations are appropriate, similar to any other birthday. Special prayers are often said just for Pentecost. To celebrate the Birth Day of our Church... Please wear your fire colors to church next weekend - June 3/4. Also... There will be a special COFFEE & CONVERSATION HOUR in Nellis Hall after our 9AM Mass at our Holy Ghost worship site. Please plan on joining us to celebrate the birth of our church! What you do with your talent is your gift to God. THE SPRINKLER SYSTEM IS COMPLETE! The guys finished installing the new sprinkler system in the church at St. Jude this week. The new pipes are installed, filled with water, tested and approved by the Gates Fire Marshall. The system is operational, but we hope it is never used! Look up when you are in church.it s different! We painted the pipes so they would blend in better with the ceiling and walls. The total cost is $39,800. Now, the next project is to replace the carpet in the church. The carpet replacement is scheduled for September 5-9. We will need to remove all the pews, rip up the old carpet, put in the new carpet and replace the pews. The old carpet is 25 years old, and has served us well. This will be a very big job, and we will need to reschedule daily masses at one of the other churches while the guys are working in the church. The new carpet will cost $20,000. This means that St. Jude s 9:00AM weekday masses (Monday, Thursday & Friday) will resume at St. Jude on Thursday, June 1st. Keep those weekend donations coming! HOLY FAMILY MEN S CLUB NEWS The final meeting before summer break will be on Thursday, June 8th. The meeting will be picnic style, including pizza and wings. SUNDAY READINGS - June 4, 2017 PENTECOST SUNDAY 1st Reading - Acts 2:1-11 2nd Reading - 1 Corinthians 12:3-7, 12-13 Gospel - John 20:19-23 Jesus gift of the Holy Spirit, was the greatest gift He could have left the Church. This Pentecost Sunday it is important to evaluate our own hunger and longing to be filled by the Holy Spirit. Do we want Him to fill our life? Do we want His influence in us enough to regularly pray and ask Him to fill our lives? Do we want the effects which His filling will bring, the positive changes in our life? Or are we satisfied to simply have the assurance that we have been made children of God, and beyond that would prefer not to be bothered? These are difficult questions, our response to them is almost as important as was our initial decision to respond in faith to Jesus. How we welcome the Holy Spirit in our life will make all the difference in how we experience and enjoy the Christian life. As we contemplate the Holy Spirit s presence in our lives it is important that we recognize that His presence is a unifying presence and not simply an individualistic presence. By that I mean that though He gives gifts to us individually and does for each of us He does those things for us because we are part of a whole, the Church, His visible body on earth. In the Scripture passages we will hear at mass this Sunday, the focus is on the unifying presence of the Holy Spirit. They show how He took the diversity of people and melded them into one body. How the Holy Spirit enables the many members to function for the common good of the one body. When we amplify our individual experience of the Holy Spirit to the exclusion of the Body we do Him a disservice. His abiding presence also provides companionship as we go through life. Often His presence is manifest through the physical presence of another member of the Body in whom He dwells. With the Holy Spirit we are never, never, ever, alone; God is with us, indwelling us. Receive the Holy Spirit... ST. HELEN S SPARKLE WORKERS TEAM 3 HOLY GHOST GLEAM TEAM TEAM 1 The Parish of the Holy Family hosted a picnic meal at Holy Apostles on Tuesday, May 23rd. We served over 100 people with this ministry with food and time donated by parishioners of our three churches.
