We will shortly be seeking a new editor (editors), and those who might be interested in helping with this aspect of the Association should contact our new President, Dr Richard Feist, as soon as possible.

CJMA / ACJM - Bulletin 5 CONFERENCES/ANNOUNCEMENTS October 26-27, 2006 - The Netherlands, University of Leiden Theme: Religion, Science and Public Concern: Discourses on Ethics, Ecology, and Genomics The aim of the conference, organised by the Faculty of Theology at Leiden University, is to bring together researchers interested in interactions between religion, ethics, and science in public discourses. In reflecting upon the social and moral jobs that speakers expect religious, ethical, and scientific notions to do, we may acquire a better understanding of debates on controversial issues of public policy and on the understanding of the role of and the relation between religion, ethics, science, politics, and technology. Much of medical practice itself was originally considered sacrilegious: the opening up of the body, the touching of women, the touching of 'private' parts of the body and many of the original medical instruments and techniques, such tasting a patient's urine, reflect these earlier concerns. With the development of organ transplantation and the commodification of both 'natural' and 'manufactured' body parts, the idea of the body as sacred is weakening, yet the concept of the sacred is still central to Western medical practice. CJMA / ACJM - Bulletin 7 Report on the Assemblée générale of the Institut International Jacques Maritain - Rome, 25-26 March 2006 The Assemblée générale of the Institut International Jacques Maritain was held in Rome, on Saturday 26 March 2006 preceded, on the 25th, by a meeting of the Board of Governors. Will Sweet, the Past-President of our Canadian Association, is a Vice President of the Institut International as well as a member of the Board, and he was able to attend the meeting this year. As many CJMA members know, the International Institute has its general secretariat on the via Flavia in Rome, but it also works through two other centres in Italy (the Study and Research Centre in Treviso, and the Section of Friuli-Venezia Giulia in Trieste, which specialises in questions and issues relating to Central and Eastern Europe). The Institute has operative relations status with UNESCO and a liaison status with the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations. In 1999, the UNESCO professorial chair in Pace, Sviluppo Culturale e Politiche Culturali [Peace, Cultural Development and Cultural Policies] was established at the Institute. At the Assemblée générale, the revised constitution of the Institute was discussed and approved, and there were elections for the senior committees and executive. Will Sweet was re-elected for a second term as Vice President. Since the time of the Assemblée générale, the most recent issue in the New Series of Notes et Documents has appeared. In that issue, one will find articles on the changes in Latin America / América Latina en movimiento. Studies on the Centenaire du baptême des Maritain (11 juin 1906 11 juin 2006) are also included, such as articles on Les grandes amitiés by Georges Card. Cottier, and Raïssa Maritain et Marc Chagall: un imaginaire partagé by Roberto Addino. For subscription information, please contact Additional information on the International Institute is available at : http://www.maritain.org/nuovo/index.html

The Association also publishes the journal Études maritainiennes - Maritain Studies FORTHCOMING FROM ASHGATE PUBLISHERS Religion and the Challenges of Science Edited by William Sweet and Richard Feist Does science pose a challenge to religion and religious belief? This question has been a matter of long-standing debate - and it continues to concern not only scholars in philosophy, theology, and the sciences, but also those involved in public educational policy. This volume provides background to the current 'science and religion' debate, yet focuses as well on themes where recent discussion of the relation between science and religion has been particularly concentrated. The first theme deals with the history of the interrelation of science and religion. The second and third themes deal with the implications of recent work in cosmology, biology and socalled intelligent design for religion and religious belief. The fourth theme is concerned with 'conceptual issues' underlying, or implied, in the current debates, such as: Are scientific naturalism and religion compatible? Are science and religion bodies of knowledge or practices or both? Do religion and science offer conflicting truth claims? By illuminating contemporary discussion in the science-religion debate and by outlining the options available in describing the relation between the two, this volume will be of interest to scholars and to members of the educated public alike.
