The Holy Family of Jesus, Mary, and Joseph December 31, 2017 St. Mary Catholic Church Hagerstown, MD St. Michael Catholic Church Clear Spring, MD

Dear Parishioners, Merry Christmas! Whether family came to you or you went to your family, I hope that you all had a prayerful and joyful celebration of the Lord s birth on Christmas Day and that that prayer and joy is continuing to permeate these days of the Christmas season! On the feast of the Holy Family today and tomorrow as we honor Mary under her title of Mother of God, may Jesus, Mary, and Joseph strengthen your family with their prayers and example. No matter what family life is like, good, bad, or somewhere in between, Jesus, Mary, and Joseph show us what we are striving for, and God gives us His grace to achieve it. I am grateful to God for our parish family and all the kindness and generosity you display throughout the year, but especially at this time. The abundance of gifts for the children of Washington County s Head Start program was quite moving. Your thoughtfulness towards Fr. Larry and me is deeply appreciated. The way you welcome newcomers and visitors is inspiring. I pray that St. Mary s and St. Michael s will be more and more a place of solace and refuge from all the challenges of life as well as strength to face them. A place where God s people will be able to meet Him face to face not just with the help of images of the Christ child but in His Real Presence in the Blessed Sacrament along with the kindness that you show having been strengthened by Holy Communion and each of the Sacraments. As I mentioned two Sundays ago, I will be away from December 29 to January 15 to work on my dissertation. I am so close to being finished, with a bit of dedicated time like this, I hope to be finished by October. Please pray for this intention that, once finished, I may focus even more on the important work God has in mind for us here. While I am gone, please welcome Father Jon Kightlinger who will be assisting with Mass and Confessions in my absence. Father Jon is a priest of the Archdiocese who has been dedicating his priestly service to helping parishes in need of temporary priestly ministry (like us right now!). Father Jon s presence is a real blessing! May God bless you and keep you in His care, and may the Blessed Mother intercede for you, Father Cibelli

Father, Why do they call it, Mass? The word, Mass, comes from the Latin word, missa. Latin is the official language of the Roman Catholic Church, and for many years the Holy Sacrifice of the Mass was celebrated only in Latin. The word, Mass, comes from the ending of the of the Liturgy when the priest would say to the people, Ite, missa est, which is Latin for GO, you are sent out. Somehow, the word, missa, got translated as Mass. Missa is also the origin of the word, mission. Therefore, after receiving Jesus Body and Blood, Soul and Divinity in Holy Communion, you are sent out on mission to preach the Good News of Jesus Christ. This is the reason why, in the latest translation of the Roman Missal, the priest, at the end of Mass, tells the people to Go and announce the Gospel of the Lord. The word Ite, is the imperative, or command form, of the verb, go. Missa is to send out ; and est is the verb, is. So at the end of Mass, after hearing the Sacred Scriptures and receiving the Holy Eucharist, the faithful are called to go and share the Good News of Jesus Christ with everyone they meet. Therefore, the Mass never really ends because you are being sent on a MISSION, missa, to Go, and announce the Gospel of the Lord. Ask The Priest is a continuing feature of the Bulletin. If you have a question regarding the Catholic faith, please place your question in the box on the back table. St. Mary 224 W.
