Have you ever wanted to be an altar server or are you a retired altar server who would like to serve on the altar again. If so we need you. For some reason there seems to be a shortage of altar servers willing and/or able to serve the weekend masses in our parish. I only ask that you remember that this is a commitment not only to the parish but more importantly, to the Lord. Any child who has made their First Holy Communion is eligible as well as any adult. Recently I was asked by an altar server why I had to wear so many heavy clothes for mass especially when it is so hot outside. The altar server was referring to the vestments I was putting on in preparation for the celebration of Sunday Mass. I explained to the server that the Mass was a very special time because it is the time that we are in a sense visiting God in his house and celebrating a meal with His son Jesus who is also Lord. I asked the server if they ever go to visit someone very special for a dinner or party and asked how they and their parents dress. The server replied with a big smile, we get all dressed up. I asked the server if they thought anyone was more special than the Lord Himself. I remembered reading an article Fr. Donald Breier, who was and still is mentor to me, wrote when he was the pastor of St. Paul Cathedral regarding appropriate dress in the church. Especially in the days without air-conditioning, many wonder why the priest dressed for Mass in the heavy vestments even on the hottest days. The answer is quite simple: celebrating the Eucharist is special, and this action of thanksgiving to God should demonstrate its uniqueness and sacredness even in the way we dress. This should hold for all of us, those on the altar and those in the pews. There are some manners of dress which are just not appropriate for church and the celebration of the Eucharist. Short shorts, tight form-fitting clothing, open midriffs, short skirts and low-cut tops are just not appropriate for church. This doesn t mean that we have to put on a fashion show in order to come to church, but it does mean that we should dress so that we are not a distraction to others and are respectful to the presence of God whom we come to worship. Please check the mirror before you leave for church. Doing so shows respect for God, ourselves and those around you! Don t get me wrong, I too like to wear summer attire when it is very hot and humid in our churches. You sometimes see me in a light colored cleric shirt or even a light golf shirt, and if it is very hot and humid, occasionally even shorts. I am very grateful that parishioners come out in the summer heat for Mass, but there should be a limit to what we are willing to expose to others at Mass. If what we put on for church looks like it could be worn to a trashy night club, a pool or picnic, it probably should be saved for there. Just my thoughts! Like it or not, what we dress in is a direct reflection of who we are personally, socially, and historically. Leah Wilson Celebrations of Life s Journey Fr. Steve Together we welcome And all children who were baptized into our faith & Family Congratulations to the Parents & Godparents Please remember members of our parishes who are in nursing homes, the homebound, the sick and their caregivers in your prayers. May God s mercy shine on them. If you need to prepare for the baptism of your infant, and you have not had the preparation seminar, please contact Deacon Mike at (412) 884-7744, extension 206 to schedule a time. The time it takes is 45 minutes to one hour. We will work to schedule a time that is convenient for both mom and dad to attend. Sponsors are also welcome. If you already have had the training, just call Deacon Mike and he will get you on the schedule for your newest arrival. God bless and congratulations! Our sympathy is extended to the families of: Alice Frankwitt and Robert Flannery Grant to Them O Lord, And Let Perpetual Light shine on Them.

By Stephanie Logue Being Charitable A past homily of Fr. Steve s got me thinking. He told the story of ignoring a man who was panhandling at an intersection where he was stopped at a red light, and how his niece made him think about his actions. How often do we do that? Walk past a homeless person sitting on the ground holding a tin cup in downtown Pittsburgh? Look down on someone who is dressed shabbily? Throw away a piece of mail from a charitable organization? Cut someone off who is soliciting donations by telephone? Or being resentful when we are asked to increase our offertory gifts? Of course, most of us are not millionaires and can t give to every charity that approaches us. But we can probably do more than we do. I was talking to a friend about Fr. Steve s homily and she said that, on her way home from work during the summer, she always passed a homeless person at one of the intersections along her route. She thought about how hot it must be for him to be outside all day in the blistering sun. So she started carrying extra bottles of water in her car. Each day, when he approached her car at the intersection, she would give him one of the water bottles. A small, but very Christian, thing to do. Years ago, WWJD? ( What Would Jesus Do? ) was a popular fad, found on jewelry, keychains, bookmarks, etc. Even though we don t see these items much anymore, it is still something I think about when faced with a challenge. Many times, my first inclination is not at all what Jesus would have done, but it sometimes makes me change my mind and make the more charitable decision. We can never assume what s going on in someone else s life. But we can respond like Jesus would. Do something if possible -- don t turn your back on one of His children. ATTENTION PLEASE NOTE The DEADLINE for BULLETIN SUBMISSIONS will be Thursday at 3 PM. Articles received after that time will be in the following weeks bulletin. SAFE ENVIRONMENT PROGRAM We will be offering Mandatory Reporters Live training sessions at the parish office building at St. Albert site on the following dates. Wednesday, August 23, 2017 6 PM to 9 PM Saturday, August 26, 2017 10 AM to 1 PM Wednesday, September 20, 2017 6 PM to 9 PM Saturday, September 23, 2017 10 AM to 1 PM We have had many questions regarding these sessions, such as: Who has to attend these sessions? Answer all adult volunteers or employees of the diocese ( this includes anyone over the age of 18 ). Didn t I attend this session years ago? Answer most likely you attended a session titled Protecting God s Children (that showed you what to look for to know that a child was in trouble and what to do). It was mandated by the Catholic Diocese. Mandatory Reporters training is State Mandated, it shows you what to look for, how to report it and who are mandated reporters. There are only 50 openings for each session, you can contact the office and I will register you or on line at Diopitt.org. CHRISTIAN MOTHERS & GUILD BUS TRIP The Christian Mothers and Guild is sponsoring their annual day bus trip Saturday, September 9th. Cost is $89.00. This year we will be going to Ohio for a Brown Bag and Basilica Tour. Seats are still available and all are welcome to join us. Please call Donna Kratina 412-884-3457 for more information. Gilmary Council #3868 Grand Knight Bernard Komoroski (412-381-7175) Help us stay informed! Our parish is dedicated to remaining in the lives of parishioners who may no longer be able to make it to church. If you have a family member or neighbor who is in the hospital, recently homebound, or in a care facility, please inform the parish office so we can connect him or her with our parish ministries which serve these groups. Thank you!

As a twelve step program, we offer our help by sharing our experience, strength, and hope. Nar-Anon is a twelve step program for families and friends of addicts. Our next meeting will be Monday July 24,2017, at the Holy Apostles parish, St. Albert s church, in the chapel. We will begin at 6:30 pm. If you have been affected by someone else s addiction, as the mission statement says, please join us. We maintain anonymity for the sake of all. Saturday, August 12, 2017 7:00 8:30 pm Saint Albert the Great Church Questions: call 412-884-7744 Building the Kingdom of God In today s Gospel Jesus compares the kingdom of God to a number of different things: a man who sowed good seed, a mustard seed, and yeast. Similarly, there is no one way to build up the kingdom of God in the Church. As the On Mission for The Church Alive! initiative progresses, our parishes will be restructured to better serve the needs of our communities, but the results will not be cookie-cutter. In fact, each grouping of parishes will be asked to discover the best ways to build up the kingdom of God in light of the unique situations of their families and neighborhoods. In the end, it is hoped that the Church, the Body of Christ, will grow and flourish as we focus on how God is life is alive in us.
