ASK Father Jim QUESTION: I know that love is a Christian virtue, but what gift of human existence can bring us closer to God and His True Church? (K.P.) ANSWER: We all know the FOUR letter word LOVE in our Christian walk; but there is an ELEVEN letter word that needs to be preached and practiced every day of life...the word is HOSPITALITY. HOSPITALITY in our Christian understanding means to open one s heart, soul and life to another human being regardless of that person s circumstances or belief. To offer hospitality means to give unconditional love and Christ-like compassion to another human being. What a gift! To pray, to offer gifts to the Church, to sing praises to God without hospitality is spiritually fruitless. Offer your being, your family, your home, your food, your money, your worldly and spiritual gifts and you will see, feel and finally realize Jesus Christ is in your midst. Christ gave His love and offered hospitality to all in His midst. Try it and you will feel Christ not only in your heart, but in your life! QUESTION: Is the devil or evil one a reality in our Christian walk? Can t we just love God and see the goodness of life? (C. S.) ANSWER: We must love God and yes...we must see all that is good in this life; but it is our responsibility to protect and defend all that is holy and sacred to God. I Peter 5:8 reads: Be sober, be vigilant; because your adversary the devil walks about like a roaring lion, seeking whom he may devour. QUESTION: In our Church services, I hear the word Alleluia (chanted very often). What does it really mean? (J. A.) ANSWER: Alleluia is a Hebrew word (Hallelujah) meaning PRAISE GOD. Now you know. Thanks for asking on behalf of many readers! QUESTION: Repentance is a word we hear so often in the Orthodox faith. Please note for me examples where we experience forgiveness through the Church. (X. S.) ANSWER: We experience total forgiveness in the Sacrament of Holy Confession. An Orthodox Christian also experiences examples of forgiveness in personal PRAYER, in the petitions and supplication prayers in our Church Services. Forgiveness is also found in the Sacrament of Holy Unction and also with receiving Holy Communion...the Servant of God receives the Body and Blood of Christ for the FORGIVENESS OF SINS and eternal life. It should also be said that the LORD S PRAYER reminds us of the words Forgive us our Trespasses as we forgive those who Trespass against us. When we sin, we separate ourselves from Jesus Christ, His Church and our fellow man. Unite yourself with Christ by confessing your sins, loving your brothers and sisters and keeping the Ten Commandments. Await your greatest gift from God Your sins are forgiven!

Parish Council News It gives me great pleasure to report that on September 2nd at St Nectrarios Church in Palatine, Deacon Dimitri was Ordained into the Priesthood. Fr. Jim, Nick Mechales and a few others from the Parish attended to witness the beautiful Service of the Ordination. As most are already aware, Fr. Dimitri has been assigned to Fr Jim and our Parish as our full time second Priest. Fr Dimitri, we look forward to the beginning of your Ministry at SS. Peter and Paul.. AXIOS August was a busy month for the Parish. Preparations were finalized for the start of many of our Church Ministries: Church School, Agape Preschool, Greek School, Adult Bible Study, Men s Bible Study, Faith, Love and Joy, Junior GOYA and GOYA youth programs, Orthodox Parents Association and Coffee Connection. We will soon begin the Georgia Photopulos Cancer Support Group, 3/4 th grade, 5/6 th grade, Junior High, High School Girls and High School Boys Basketball programs in the Metropolis of Chicago League (GOAL). There are many Ministries at our Parish which you and your family can enjoy. Stop at the Outreach table during coffee hour for information on all Ministries and see how you can increase your participation in our Church Community. The Parish also celebrated Paraklisis evening Services, Services of the Divine Liturgy for the Service of the Transfiguration, Falling Asleep of the Virgin Mary and the beginning of the Ecclesiastical New Year. Happy Name Day to all who celebrated. The children also participated in a week long Vacation Church School. We owe a big THANK YOU to our Clergy, Directors, and Volunteers who made it a great success and very meaningful to the children. On August 26 th I attended Liturgy at the Annunciation Cathedral in downtown Chicago. After Liturgy, His Grace Bishop DEMETRIOS presented our own Parishioner, two-time Olympian Christina Loukas with the Medal of Saint Paul. The Medal of Saint Paul is the highest honor that a lay person can receive in the Orthodox Church. It takes great dedication, commitment and discipline to be an Olympian.to do it twice is very rare. It takes a very special person to accomplish this. On behalf of Fr Jim and the Parish of SS Peter and Paul, I presented Christina with a bouquet of flowers. Congratulations to the Loukas family: George, Patty, Stacy, Nick and Kosta and Christina for an amazing accomplishment. Christina, you are truly worthy AXIA I reported in last month s monthly bulletin that we had to move money from another account into the general fund to pay its bills. I m pleased to report that the cash balances in the general fund have improved and we look to replace the borrowed funds soon. Thank you to everyone who contributed, made pledges, fulfilled pledges and to our new members who have joined the Parish. Our Stewardship program is the major source of funds needed to keep the Ministries of our Parish alive. The Holy Great Martyr Demetrius the Myrrh-streamer October 26 Saint Demetrius was a Thessalonian, a most pious son of pious and noble parents, and a teacher of the Faith of Christ. When Maximian first came to Thessalonica in 290, he raised the Saint to the rank of Duke of Thessaly. But when it was discovered that the Saint was a Christian, he was arrested and kept bound in a bath-house. While the games were under way in the city, Maximian was a spectator there. A certain friend of his, a barbarian who was a notable wrestler, Lyaeus by name, waxing haughty because of the height and strength of his body, boasted in the stadium and challenged the citizens to a contest with him. All that fought with him were defeated. Seeing this, a certain youth named Nestor, aquaintance of Demetrius', came to the Saint in the bath-house and asked his blessing to fight Lyaeus single-handed. Receiving this blessing and sealing himself with the sign of the precious Cross, he presented himself in the stadium, and said, "O God of Demetrius, help me!" and straightway he engaged Lyaeus in combat and smote him with a mortal blow to the heart, leaving the former boaster lifeless upon the earth. Maximian was sorely grieved over this, and when he learned who was the cause of this defeat, he commanded straightway and Demetrius was pierced with lances while he was yet in the bath -house, As for Nestor, Maximian commanded that he be slain with his own sword. Apolytikion in the Third Tone The world has found in you a great champion in time of peril, as you emerged the victor in routing the barbarians. For as you brought to naught the boasts of Lyaios, imparting courage to Nestor in the stadium, in like manner, holy one, great Martyr Dimitrios, invoke Christ God for us, that He may grant us His great mercy. Kontakion in the Second Tone God, who gave you invincible power and with care kept your city invulnerable, royally clothed the Church in purple with the streams of your blood, for you are her strength, O Dimitrios.

Dear Faithful Steward What Percentage? By Father Michael Stearns What percentage of your Time, Talent, and Treasure are you going to return back to God over the next year, through your Stewardship in His Holy Orthodox Church? This is the question that all of us as Orthodox Christians are confronted with, as we begin the new Ecclesiastical Year. The real question behind this inquiry is, I believe, much more important. Are you going to be intentional about your Stewardship decisions, or allow others to dictate this important measure of your salvation? Of course Stewardship for the Orthodox Christian is entirely voluntary. You get to decide how much, how often, when and in what form you make your contributions, at least in theory. Reality is a different story. How many of us intentionally choose, and then actually follow through with our decisions, on how much of our day, our interests, and our income we offer back to our Savior in Thanksgiving? Most of us choose instead to let others decide, or let circumstances dictate. Our offerings to God, whether voluntary or involuntary (conscious or unconscious), will end up being some percentage (however small) of the whole. The reality is that we probably have no idea what that percentage is; one, because we have not made the effort to figure it out; and two, because we have not intentionally decided what it should be. This passive (as opposed to active) approach to our Stewardship means that someone or something else is determining this part of our spiritual life for us. Are we really okay with that? Allow me to use the following example, especially for those who consider themselves mathematically challenged. Pretend for a moment that the most important person in your life brought a giant pizza over to your house, with all of your favorite toppings, in order to feed (provide for) you and your family. Piece by piece, that delicious pie begins to disappear, as you try and stave off all the hungry mouths clamoring to be satisfied. While you, your spouse, and the kids are all stuffing your faces, suddenly the doorbell rings. You stop to answer the door, and in barges a ravenous mob of extended family, sales people, and business associates. For some reason, you feel obligated to feed these folks, and continue dishing out the slices. As your kid s soccer coach finishes off the last piece, he tosses the crust to the dog, and heads toward the door with the others, saying that he ll be back again tomorrow. The others all nod and echo in agreement as they head back from whence they came. As you stare dumbfounded at the giant empty pizza box, containing only a few stray crumbs, something catches your eye. There stands your special guest in the corner of the room. You suddenly feel sick to your stomach, not from your recent gorging, but from the gnawing guilt within, as you suddenly realize that all you have to offer him are a few left over crumbs. The one who provided such abundant sustenance is leaving your home empty handed! As your heart breaks and a tear comes to your eye, he says, Don t worry my child, I ll be back again tomorrow with more, and disappears. You vow at that moment, that tomorrow, the provider will get the very first piece, before anyone else, even yourself. That only seems fair.

October is Stewardship Month October is once again Stewardship Month at Saints Peter & Paul. The Stewardship Committee, under the direction and guidance of Father James Dokos; with the assistance of Father Michael Stearns, who remains connected to our Parish in a Stewardship Consulting role; is pleased to announce the roll out of a new Stewardship Campaign that will build on the foundational successes of the past year. The theme for this program is entitled We Are Family. This new program is designed to help you get the most out of your personal and Parish Stewardship experience. It contains elements that will serve to both strengthen your spiritual commitment, as well as greatly improve our Parish s finances. We know that through your dedicated participation, our Parish Family will be greatly strengthened. Information A proper Orthodox education concerning Stewardship is essential for you to get the most out of this program. To that end, we are once again providing a number of opportunities for you to be re-shaped by the Church s teaching. Every Sunday in October there will be a special bulletin insert filled with inspiring information, which will of course be supported by our Clergy s practical wisdom emanating from the pulpit. Stewardship packets containing detailed instructions will be mailed directly to your homes, well in time for you and your family to make an informed and Spirit-filled Stewardship Commitment. This process will culminate on Stewardship Sunday, October 28 th, when everyone will be asked to make their financial Stewardship commitment for the coming year, by turning in their completed Pledge Card. The most important thing that you can do regarding this process is be present (physically, mentally, emotionally, and above all spiritually) every Sunday in October! Objectives Our goal is that everyone at Saints Peter & Paul become a Steward. This first means filling out a Stewardship Pledge Card. We have re-designed the card for maximum participation and efficiency, and this will be the principal determinant of yearly membership in the Parish. In other words, our goal should be no less than 100% participation! Giving, and the expectations surrounding it, at Saints Peter & Paul, will always remain true to the principles of authentic Orthodox Christian Stewardship YOU will decide how much to give, how often, and in what manner. That is your sacred responsibility as a Steward! Expectations Stewardship Sunday is October 28 th, 2012. This is the day when every Steward will turn in their Pledge Card. They will be collected by the ushers at the conclusion of the Divine Liturgy, and prayed over by the Clergy, invoking God s blessing on our endeavors. Please take this month of October to read, listen, ask questions, discuss, think, pray (above all else pray), then make a commitment that will be meaningful in your life, will reflect your true faith, and will show your love for Christ and His Holy Church!

James (Iakovos) the Apostle, brother of Our Lord October 23 According to some, this Saint was a son of Joseph the Betrothed, born of the wife that the latter had before he was betrothed to the Ever-virgin. Hence he was the brother of the Lord, Who was also thought to be the son of Joseph (Matt. 13: 55). But some say that he was a nephew of Joseph, and the son of his brother Cleopas, who was also called Alphaeus and Mary his wife, who was the first cousin of the Theotokos. But even according to this genealogy, he was still called, according to the idiom of the Scriptures, the Lord's brother because of their kinship. This Iakovos is called the Less (Mark 15:4) by the Evangelists to distinguish him from Iakovos, the son of Zebedee, who was called the Great. He became the first Bishop of Jerusalem, elevated to this episcopal rank by the Apostles, according to Eusebius (Eccl. Hist., Book II: 23), and was called Obliah, that is, the Just, because of his great holiness and righteousness. Having ascended the crest of the Temple on the day of the Passover at the prompting of all, he bore testimony from there concerning his belief in Jesus, and he proclaimed with a great voice that Jesus sits at the right hand of the great power of God and shall come again upon the clouds of heaven. On hearing this testimony, many of those present cried, "Hosanna to the Son of David." But the Scribes and Pharisees cried, "So, even the just one hath been led astray," and at the command of Ananias the high priest, the Apostle was cast down headlong from thence, then was stoned, and while he prayed for his slayers, his head was crushed by the wooden club wielded by a certain scribe. The first of the Catholic (General) Epistles written to the Jews in the Diaspora who believed in Christ was written by this Iakovos. Apolytikion in the Fourth Tone As the Lord's disciple, O righteous One, you received the Gospel, as Martyr, you have unwavering courage, as the Lord's brother, you have forthrightness, as Hierarch, intercession. Intercede with Christ our God, that our souls may be saved. Kontakion in the Fourth Tone O wondrous Iakovos, God the Logos, only-begotten of the Father, who dwelt among us in latter days, declared you, the first shepherd and teacher of Jerusalem, and faithful steward of the spiritual mysteries. Wherefore, we all honor you, O Apostle. SS. Peter & Paul Youth & Family Ministries Report: As the new shepherd under the masterful eyes of Fr. Jim, I have enjoyed tremendously getting to know the families of SS. Peter and Paul. They have been so kind to both Presbytera Mary and myself and very welcoming. While the first few months of Youth Ministry goes through its growing pains and changes, it will, with prayer and dedication, develop into a most excellent program. Please know that the changes implemented are for the overall benefit of the programs and the children as we strive to do all things with love and patience. On, Saturday, September 8 th the youth families of our parish enjoyed a delightful barbeque on the front lawn of our parish following the Annual Blessing of the Animals (Prayer of St. Modesto of Jerusalem). All of the families gathered for fellowship and to learn about the new and veteran programs available to the youth. Ministries HOPE: The Hope Group has started and the children are having a blast. Between learning about the Church (How to light a candle, do his or her cross, and kissing icons); learning about the Holy Cross, St. Sophia, and St. Thekla; and having fun, the children are truly enjoying making the Church both familiar and exciting. FAITH/LOVE/JOY: While we have not met yet officially, there is a lot of excitement for October 2 nd. Jr. G.O.Y.A.: The Jr. GOYA met for their first meeting and elected Officers. We also discussed the meaning of the Holy Cross, including what Crucifixion meant in the time of Christ and how the symbol of torturous death became the saving banner of victory. Jr. GOYA 2012-2013 Officers President: Katy Symanietz Treasurer: Katie Demakos Secretary: Mitry Anderson Activities Director: Tricia & Mike Katsamakis Sr. G.O.Y.A.: The Sr. GOYA met for the first time and shared some of their interests and talents, which range from acting, singing, football, baseball, basketball, and studies. The GOYAns showed themselves, despite being exceptionally busy with School and Extracurricular Activities, to possess a deep love for their faith and Church. We should all pray for their continued strength and diligence. No officers were elected yet, as of the writing of this article, but they will be noted on the website. Philoptochos News by Milly Pappas - OCTOBER IS BREAST CANCER MONTH Saints Peter and Paul Philoptochos will honor all women and will participate in several events to help celebrate Breast Cancer Month. #1 A $10,000 donation from SS. Peter and Paul Philoptochos Philanthropy Fund to: Patient Navigation Services at Stroger Hospital. 100% of the donation will go directly to benefit under-served women who are battling breast cancer. Breast cancer initiatives include: free wigs, bras, prosthesis counseling, rides to treatment and much more. #2 On Thursday, October 18, SS. Peter and Paul Philoptochos will co-chair with St. John the Baptist Philoptochos and The Ascension of Our Lord Philoptochos, the POWER OF PINK benefit for the American Cancer Society, Breast Cancer Initiatives (see flyer on next page.
