Leader BIBLE STUDY Use Week of: The Pharisees and scribes were keeping a close eye on Jesus. They watched Him on the Sabbath as He taught in the synagogue. A man there had a paralyzed hand. The religious leaders knew Jesus had power to heal people. They watched to see if He would heal on the Sabbath. According to the law, people should not do work on the Sabbath. Maybe Jesus had been standing before the crowd when He noticed the religious leaders. He was not only aware of their presence, but He knew their thoughts as well. So Jesus called to the man with the paralyzed hand. Stand up here, Jesus said. So the man stood, and Jesus addressed the Pharisees and scribes. 6 Is it lawful on the Sabbath to do what is good or to do what is evil, to save a life or to kill? Jesus asked. The religious leaders did not answer. The hardness of their hearts made Jesus sad. They didn t understand God s purpose for the Sabbath. Jesus told the man, Stretch out your hand. The man s hand was healed. The Pharisees and scribes were angry, and they discussed what they might do to Jesus. Jesus had distinguished Himself as the Lord of the Sabbath. (See Luke 6:5.) That Jesus is Lord means He has control. Jesus has control over everything. But Jesus hadn t come to get rid of the Sabbath; He wanted to remind the people why God gave them the Sabbath. (See Ex. 20:8-11.) God intended for the Sabbath to be a blessing to His people, a day of rest from their hard work. But the Pharisees made the Sabbath all about following the rules, making the Sabbath a burden instead. The Sabbath is not for our duty but for our delight. Jesus rejected the Pharisees legalism that made it impossible to do anything on the Sabbath. The Sabbath is a day to focus on Jesus. In Him, we have rest from striving to be good enough. True rest comes when we trust in Jesus finished work on the cross for our salvation. 116 Preschool Bible Study Leader Guide Unit 26 Session 6 2014 LifeWay 1

The BIBLE STORY Jesus Healed a Man s Hand Matthew 12:9-14; Mark 3:1-6; Luke 6:6-11 On the Sabbath, Jesus went into the synagogue a special building where God s people met together. The Sabbath was a special day. God had told His people not to do any work on the Sabbath. The Sabbath was a day for God s people to rest from their work and to worship God. Jesus taught the people in the synagogue. One of the men in the synagogue had a problem with his hand. He could not move his right hand. The religious leaders were in the synagogue, and they watched Jesus carefully. They wondered if Jesus was going to help the man by healing his hand. The religious leaders knew God s law said people should not do any work on the Sabbath, and they wanted to see if Jesus would heal the man. Then they could say Jesus broke the law. The leaders asked Jesus a question. Is it OK to heal people on the Sabbath day? they asked. Jesus asked the religious leaders a question. Maybe they could figure out the answer themselves. Jesus asked, If you have a sheep and it falls into a ditch on the Sabbath, would you leave it there? Or would you grab the sheep and lift it out of the ditch? That was an easy question. Of course they wouldn t leave the sheep lying in the ditch! They would lift the sheep out of the ditch. People who owned sheep took care of them. No one would want to let his sheep get hurt or die. Then Jesus said, A man is much more important than a sheep, so it is right to do good on the Sabbath. If you would help a sheep out of trouble on the Sabbath, of course you should help a person who is in trouble! Jesus knew that the leaders were hoping to catch Him breaking God s law, but helping the man was not against the law. So Jesus called out to the man who could not move his hand. Stand up here where everyone can see you, Jesus said. Then Jesus said to the man, Stretch out your hand. So the man 118 Preschool Bible Study Leader Guide Unit 26 Session 6 2014 LifeWay 3

stretched out his hand! He had not been able to move his hand before, but now his right hand was just as good as his left hand! The religious leaders should have been happy that the man was healed. They should have praised God for giving Jesus the power to heal. Instead, the religious leaders were angry! They did not like Jesus or what He was doing. They left the synagogue and made a plan about how they might kill Jesus. Christ Connection: Jesus healed a man s hand on the Sabbath even though the religious leaders thought He shouldn t. Jesus showed that God gives us rules to help us, not to hurt us. The religious leaders made a plan to kill Jesus, but God planned to use Jesus death to help people by saving them from their sin. be happy if Jesus healed your hand so you could use it again? This Is Amazing Grace song Sing a worship song Say Today we are going to learn that Jesus healed a man on the Sabbath. What is the Sabbath? The Sabbath is a day to rest. It is a day for God s people to worship Him. How can we worship God? [Wait for answers.] We can worship God in many ways! One way we can worship is by singing songs about how great God is! Sing with preschoolers This Is Amazing Grace. Invite them to dance or move happily to the music. You may also sing another worship song of your choice, such as How Great Is Our God. Practice clapping the days of the week Invite kids to say and clap the days of the week with you. Calendar, 1 per kid markers and crayons several pairs of gloves Decorate a calendar Give each child a copy of a calendar. Talk to the kids about the days of the week. Emphasize the Sabbath, which was on Saturday. Let the kids decorate their calendars. Kids may practice saying the days of the week to the rhythm of the clapping game from small group opening. Say God s people had every single day, Sunday through Friday, to work hard, but God told His people to rest on the Sabbath. The religious leaders thought that meant Jesus couldn t help people on the Sabbath, but Jesus said that God gave His people the Sabbath to be a good thing. God s rules are always to help us, not to hurt us! What is the Sabbath? The Sabbath is a day to rest. Mix and match gloves Provide several pairs of different kinds of gloves and mix them into a large pile. Guide the children to sort the gloves and place them in the proper pairs. You may instruct them to sort the gloves by color or by texture. Then guide kids to sort the gloves from smallest to biggest. Say Do you remember in our Bible story today when Jesus healed the man s hand? It was the Sabbath Day. What is the Sabbath? The Sabbath is a day to rest. The religious leaders thought that you couldn t do any kind of work on the Sabbath, even helping people! Jesus said they were wrong! Jesus said that we should continue to do good on the Sabbath. That made the religious leaders very mad, and they wanted to hurt Jesus. Jesus Performed Miracles 125 2014 LifeWay 10

Instruct one child in the pair to lightly wrap her partner s arm with the bandage. Supervise the kids to ensure they do not wrap the bandages too tightly. After a couple minutes, tell the partners to switch roles so that both children get a turn to wrap the bandage. Option: Provide baby dolls or stuffed animals for preschoolers to bandage. Say What is the Sabbath? The Sabbath is a day to rest. Jesus healed a man s hand on the Sabbath, but Jesus can do more than that! He can forgive our sins. Jesus died on the cross and rose from the dead to save people from sin. When we turn from our sin and trust in Jesus, God forgives us and we can live with Him forever in heaven. 126 Preschool Bible Study Leader Guide Unit 26 Session 6 2014 LifeWay 11

Journal Page Bible Story Coloring Page books and puzzles crayons Snack and Transition (20 minutes) Play the countdown video to signal the end of activities time and gather for snack time. Take a restroom break and wash hands or use hand sanitizer. Choose volunteers to help set up for the snack; remind children during snack time to say please and thank you. Thank God for the snack. Consider serving favorite cookies or fish-shaped crackers for the snack. As the kids eat, take note of how many eat with their right hands. After a few moments, tell the kids to place their right hands behind their back and continue eating their snack. Remind the kids that Jesus healed a man s right hand. (Luke 6:6) Talk about how difficult it would be to eat, get dressed, work, or do just about anything with only one hand! Transition When a child finishes her snack and throws away any trash, she may select a puzzle or book to examine, play quietly with play dough or a favorite toy, or color the Bible story coloring picture. This would also be a great time to encourage her to trace her handprint on the journal page. Invite her to decorate her handprint to remember that Jesus healed a man s hand. Lead the children through a prayer time, asking God to show them that God gives us rules to help us, not to hurt us. Thank Jesus for loving the man and healing him on the Sabbath. Pray that the kids would spend the rest of the day relaxing and worshiping God. If parents are picking up their children at this time, tell them something that their child enjoyed doing or did well during the session. If new leaders are arriving, quietly share useful information about kids who are present. Jesus Performed Miracles 127 2014 LifeWay 12
