Founding members included Henry Rutgers (Rutgers University) and William Colgate (Colgate Palmolive Corp.). What started as a community outreach quickly expanded into an international ministry. More than 2 years have passed. The name changed from New York Bible Society to International Bible Society to Biblica. But the mission remains the same: to transform lives through God s Word. New technologies, programs, and partnerships enhance Biblica s three core strategies: Bible translation, Bible publishing, and Bible engagement. At Biblica, we are all about the Bible. CORE MINISTRY STRATEGIES Bible Translation Imagine attempting to read the New Testament in the original Greek. Most of us would find it frustrating. We would have the Word of God but be unable to understand it. Bible Publishing Biblica is the translation sponsor and publisher of the New International Version (NIV ) Bible, the world s most popular contemporary-english Bible version. We share God s Word in print and electronic formats, including digital and audio/video. Biblica also publishes specialty Bibles for leadership training, children s ministry, crisis response, prison ministry, and other targeted needs. BIBLE ENGAGEMENT Biblica provides training and Bible resources for poor, unskilled pastors through our Equipping Leaders program. Community Bible Experience, Children for Christ, and Reach4Life programs encourage laypeople, children, and church communities globally to grow spiritually. Biblica also partners with local churches and international ministries to meet Scripture needs around the world. AREAS OF MINISTRY FOCUS Biblica has five ministry focuses. Bible and Church Engagement Reinforcing the importance and centrality of Scripture within the Church Children and Youth Ministry Reaching young people with God s Word when they are most open to the gospel Scripture Outreach Providing Bibles and biblical resources to partners, churches, and everyone who needs access to God s Word Specialized Ministry Outreach Reaching people in difficult circumstances with God s Word and providing the Bible in custom formats to meet specific situations Translation Translating God s Word and biblical resources into major languages, and providing them in formats with which people can engage 2 Annual Report FY212 YEAR END REPORT FROM DOUGLAS A. We concentrated on Bible translation work, accelerating Bible engagement programs, and strengthening our organization to ensure viability for years of expanded ministry. We had great moments as well as our share of challenges. Much has been accomplished, and there is much more to do! As one of just a handful of ministries in existence for over 2 years, Biblica continues to be all about the Bible. We believe God s Word transforms lives, communities, and entire nations. Our part is to make His Word available through Bible translation, Bible publishing, and Bible engagement. To date, we have completed Bible translations in over 1 languages, including 27 of the top 3 world languages spoken by over half the world s population. The challenge ahead is to digitize and create audio recordings of these Bible translations. Digital Bibles can be delivered instantaneously worldwide in many formats. Digital and audio Bibles will extend the Bible s reach to people in remote or restricted nations and oral cultures. But more than Bible access, Biblica is focused on Bible engagement. We want to reach 1 million people within the next three years with the opportunity to actively engage in the Bible and be transformed to help them grasp how wide and long and high and deep is the love of Christ (Ephesians 3:18, NIV). minus internet BIBLE Translation BIBLE Publishing Bible Engagement 3

YEAR END REPORT Most Read. Most Trusted. TM Ministry Highlights In fiscal year 212, Biblica reached more than 98.1 million people worldwide with God s Word by providing biblical resources and Bible engagement programs. We begin by translating and publishing the Bible in primary languages for millionplus speakers. Then, through Biblica staff and partnering local churches and international ministries, we conduct outreach and Bible engagement programs. We share the gospel and provide opportunities for millions to encounter Jesus through God s Word and be transformed. Our 3-plus Bible translation projects position us for increased ministry opportunities. We focus on major spoken languages, full Bible translation, and multiple-format delivery options including print, digital text, and audio. Our early partnership with YouVersion is allowing us to reach millions of people right now with God s Word through mobile applications. Many of our existing ministry programs continue to grow. More than xxx million people received God s Word directly or indirectly through Biblica programs: Reach 4 Life, our HIV-prevention program developed in South, is now available in more than 1 languages and will help save more than 1, youth from HIV infection this year. Biblica placed more than 9, customized NIV Bibles in the hands of U.S. military personnel. Bible Adventures, developed with Compassion International in South, is being tested in Haiti and used routinely in many countries throughout and ern. Our internet presence and activity continues to grow. We ve revamped Biblica.com to facilitate searching the scriptures. Be sure to try it in the language of your choice. We have been honored and blessed to steward the English NIV Bible around the world since its introduction in the mid 197s. The NIV reaches English-language speakers through our ministry, through ministry partners like Compassion and World Vision, and through commercial partners like Zondervan and Hodder & Stoughton. With more than 1 billion English speakers worldwide, and the NIV s leading position in most geographical areas, we are encouraged by its growing ministry influence within the global Church. One of our ongoing strengths for the future is our Leadership team. Biblica serves in over 55 countries across seven regions of the world. Biblica Ministry Leaders are from the area they oversee. This ensures our ministry is relevant to local cultures and needs. For example, our leader for the UK and is from ern Ireland, our leader is from the, and our leader is from. Sharpened Ministry Focus In 27 Biblica, formerly International Bible Society, merged with Send the Light (STL), a UK-based Christian ministry founded by Operation Mobilization. The merger has not gone as planned and in 211 we took difficult and corrective actions to sharpen our ministry focus and rebuild a viable, sustainable ministry. We sold the UK operation in segments in 21. In November 211, we sold the Biblica Publishing book division to InterVarsity Press. In March 212, we sold the n STL Distribution operation to the local management team in Tennessee. All of these actions have allowed us to get back to our core focus on Bible Translation, Bible Publishing, and Bible Engagement. While the divestiture of these ministry units resulted in a weakened balance sheet, our current situation frees us to proactively take steps to build up our financial base. We are aggressively paying down debt and looking forward with great anticipation to expanded ministry. New Ministry Initiatives In 211, we grew two new ministry initiatives. While two new initiatives may seem conservative, we balanced support for several established ministry programs, regained financial stability, while building for the future. Our first new initiative relates to the widespread use of digital media. Mobile phones, tablet computers, and other Internetfriendly devices are revolutionizing communication. While in recently, I observed people paying for their groceries with their phones. They use their cell phones for everything, including reading and listening to audio Bibles. What an evangelism and spiritual growth opportunity this is for us. We made significant progress in building our electronic content capabilities and implemented a digitization process beginning with our translations of the world s top 1 spoken languages. We also completed the translation work for an additional 17 top languages. These 27 languages alone provide more than half the world, 4 billion people, with the full Bible in their heart language. We are very grateful for the gifts received from many generous donors and Every Tribe Every Nation to launch this digital process. We began digitizing the texts using a consistent XML tagging methodology, completing non-dramatized audio recordings within local areas for each translation, and storing the electronic files in a protected, secure environment that ensures appropriate redundancy in case of an emergency. While mobile phones will continue to change over time, we will have the flexibility to adapt quickly. We are already partnering in electronic content-sharing with YouVersion, BibleGateway (Zondervan), ETEN, and others. With the excitement of these new electronic delivery devices, there is also an unvarnished challenge that had to be faced. While most of the world has more access to the Bible than ever before, Bible reading trends are in steady decline, especially in the. Most people are investing less and less time with God s Word. Biblica cannot and will not ignore this troubling trend. The word transforming in our mission statement compels us to look for solutions. Community Bible Experience was our second new initiative. It focuses on bringing local churches together as a body to read the entire New Testament in eight weeks. The program uses The Books of The Bible format reordering individual books of the Bible in a more chronological, logical order and eliminating chapter and verse numbers. This Bible is proving very effective in encouraging deeper understanding of the overarching themes and story of the Bible. Reading the Bible, understanding the historical context, and discussing passages with others a true community Bible experience encourages the Church to rebuild regular Bible reading as a standard practice. We are very encouraged by this exciting new Bible engagement program. Conclusion Biblica is blessed with many ministry responsibilities and opportunities the NIV, over 1 additional Bible translations, partners who help us reach the world, deeper involvement with the global Church, reaching oral learners with God s Word, 4 Annual Report FY212 BIBLE Translation BIBLE Publishing Bible Engagement 5

YEAR END REPORT TRANSLATION and more. Our work will be complete only when every person in the world is given the opportunity to encounter Jesus Christ through God s Word and be transformed. There is much to do. God has blessed us with a passionate team, amazing ministry and technology partners, and fantastic supporters. And finally, frequently I am asked about our name change to Biblica. Why did we change our name? Why Biblica? And, has our mission as a Bible ministry changed? Our name was changed for two reasons. With the merger of International Bible Society and Send the Light in 27, neither name worked well globally. In addition, in the new and emerging digital world, shorter descriptive names are becoming more important. Therefore, in 29, the name of the combined IBS-STL organization was changed to Biblica. Biblica was selected because of its close association with the Bible. Most encouraging is the third question, which relates to our mission. The question reflects a trust and affinity for what the ministry has stood for over the years. I enjoy looking people in the eyes and reassuring them that, while the name has changed, we remain focused on the Bible and true to the trust that has been built since 189. If you are a current Biblica partner, thank you for your support. Read on and know that your stewardship has helped us reach millions of people. If you are reading about Biblica for the first time, I hope your heart will be stirred and you will join our work. Please pray for the people we ministered to this past year, that their lives would be changed forever because of their growing knowledge of God s love for them. Pray also for those we ll engage with in the coming year, that they might experience Christ in a fresh new way through God s Word. Blessings, Doug Lockhart CEO, Biblica Bible Translations, Bible Translation Revisions, Bible Translation First Printings Since 181, Biblica has translated God s Word into over 1 languages, focusing on accuracy and clarity. We translate the Bible for major language groups of 1 million-plus speakers. This represents 389 potential languages spoken by 94% of the world s population. In 1978, Biblica published the New International Version Bible. It is the world s most-read and most-trusted contemporary English version, with more than 45 million copies in print. After a Bible translation is completed, Biblica begins the publihsing program with a first printing to launch the new Bible among the people groups it will serve.
