In his book The Last Lecture, author Randy Pausch, who is facing a terminal illness, elaborates upon his final lecture as a college professor. The book is intended to capture his deepest beliefs and life lessons and share them for benefit of his children, after he is gone. His work is full of bits of wisdom such as, It s not about how to achieve your dreams, it s about how to lead your life. If you lead your life the right way, the karma will take care of itself, the dreams will come to you. Pausch s book has sold more than five million copies in the United States, and spurred similar presentations by individuals in educational, non-profit and business organizations. Each life stage is accompanied by seminal conversations: encouraging a child before they step into the kindergarten classroom for the first time, praying for and over a naïve adolescent before they depart for college, or imparting wisdom to your adult child before they are married. It is a sobering exercise to imagine your last conversation with a loved one before they die, or to imagine what your final words will be when you approach the looming moment where our mortality falls into eternity. When these conversations come, we naturally quiet ourselves, get still, and give our attention whether we are speaking or listening. We recognize that the words reveal what lies deep within, revealing authentic humanity, foundational values and our hopes for the future. The Gospel of John (chapters 13-17) records Jesus Last Lecture of sorts. Seated with his disciples, we get to overhear a final conversation with his disciples before he is arrested and executed. In it we find some of the most moving imagery depicting the heart of God for the world. For the nine Sundays of June and July this summer, Trinity pastors will engage in a similar exercise. In our series Famous Last Words If We Had One Sermon to Preach, Brian Erickson, Suzanne Pruitt, Reid Crotty, David Thompson, Jack Hinnen, Bobby Scales, and Nathan Carden will each prepare a sermon that will be preached in rotation at each of our worship services at both Oxmoor and Oakmont campuses. I invite you to join us in worship in these coming weeks as each of our pastors give voice to a passage of scripture and message that arises from their own convictions, experiences, and hopes for the future. In Christ Alone, Nathan Carden WELCOME TO TRINITY Our mission is to Gather people to Christ, Grow people in Christ, Go to serve Christ in the world and Glorify Christ. Mosquitoes, conferences, and heat that can melt rubber. But seriously there are some wonderful things that come along with this time of year, and in our church many of them are happening at the Oakmont campus! I want to tell you about a few of them. We have had a successful launch and much of the work has fallen to our wonderful launch team. This summer, we are transitioning this group into a leadership team that will function like a miniature admin board for the campus. While a lot of the same folks will still be in leadership, I do want to invite you to be a part of it as well. I m sure many of your God-given gifts would fit in wonderfully at Trinity West Homewood. One event that I m excited about is SPREE! On Saturday, June 11 our UMW and Trinity Men will cook some BBQ, bake some delicious treats, and have vendors from 9 AM-2 PM at the Oakmont Campus (Gym). This is on top of some of the wonderful art camps, youth programs, and Trinity Olympics that are already happening here this summer, so there is fun for everyone. We aren t just having fun though. We are also serving our community. This summer we are gearing up to bring Celebrate Recovery to our campus. This is an ongoing small group recovery program based in Christ s love for those struggling with their hurts, habits, or hang-ups. Also, Project Serve has taken on some consistent outreach with our Modern Family Ministry Closet that offers clothing and supplies to foster families at no charge. This summer is a great time to plug in so that when the Fall gets here, we can truly share Christ with our community. I m excited about all this summer is going to bring and I hope you ll be a part of it with us at Trinity West Homewood. Rev. Jack Hinnen 3
