Volume 2017 Number 31 Christ is among us! He is and will be! Eighth Sunday after Pentecost Welcome to Assumption of the Virgin Mary Catholic Church of Trenton, NJ. We greet you and welcome you to our parish church. Our Church is a holy place. Our Church is where we get together in Jesus Name. It is holy because we come here to worship, to be nourished in faith through Sacred Scripture and preaching, to open our hearts and minds to celebrate the mystery of salvation in Jesus Christ and to dedicate ourselves to a life of holiness and service to the Lord and others. The church building itself reflects this faith and calls us to enter into communion with God. We invite you to share our faith in Jesus Christ, to experience our worship and to live a life dedicated to the service of God and one another in Jesus Name. The voluntary fast is a strict fast, the same as for the Great Fast or Lent. It begins on August 1 and ends on August 14. One might ask, If it is a feast, why fast? That is a good question. In our daily lives situations occur that may cause a slip-of-the-tongue and say something later regretted; or put off doing a needed task that is beneficial to one s family; or any number of sins. Sins need reparation and fasting helps prepare us for the Mystery of Reconciliation. Fasting helps keep our minds on the coming celebration through the denial of foods we like and normally consume on a daily basis. Fasting maintains our connection with Jesus Christ Who went into deserted places to fast and pray to our Heavenly Father. Communicating with the Father is necessary to live a joyful and fulfilled life. Nothing in this life can give us that fulfillment; fasting is the sacrifice of praise to God Who loves us and wishes that we keep the salvation He wrought on the Cross, His Resurrection and His Ascension. In the Divine Liturgy we pray, Holy Things to the holy. Through prayer (reading of Sacred Scripture; participation in the Divine Liturgy; private devotions) fasting and the reception of the Holy Things (the precious Body and Blood of Christ) we become holy. ******************************************************************************************************** Preparations are underway for a parish celebration of our patronal feast-day and the 126 th anniversary of our faith community. Stay tuned for further updates. Pray for the sick of our parish
