September 2017 Newsletter Volume 23 Issue 9 From Pastor Joel Skindlov Dear sisters and brothers in Christ, What are your gifts? How has God gifted you? The apostle Paul in 1st Corinthians talks about the spiritual gifts that each of us has been given. "Now there are a variety of gifts, but the same Spirit; and there are varieties of services, but the same Lord; and there are varieties of activities, but it is the same God who activates all of them in everyone. To each is given the manifestation of the Spirit for the common good" (1 Corinthians 12:4-7). Paul goes on to talk about some of the gifts that have been given to people. The list compiles a number of gifts, but it is no way an exhaustive list. Many times, I get the impression that people know or realize they are gifted by God, given certain skills, talents, abilities that work together to make them who they are. On the other hand, I wonder if we sell ourselves short in some way, believing that our daily work, interests, hobbies, passions are separate from our lives as followers of Christ? It's easy to do, going to work, connecting with family and friends, enjoying a hobby amid all the busyness of life. And yet, Jesus, invites us to use our gifts, our talents, resources, and our very lives in service to God and to one another. You are gifted, as Paul says, by the power of God's Holy Spirit to use our gifts for the building up of the body of Christ and for the common good. Fred Buechner states, "The place God calls you to is the place where your deep gladness and the world s deep hunger meet". Though not an exact science or mathematical equation, Buechner encourages us, along with the apostle Paul to look for those ways that enrich, encourage, and strengthen not only our individual lives, but our life in community. Jesus, in his teachings in Matthew 5, tells his disciples and the crowd that gathered, "You are the light of the world. A city built on a hill cannot be hid. No one after lighting a lamp puts it under the bushel basket, but on the lampstand, and it gives light to all in the house. In the same way, let your light shine before others, so that they may see your good works and give glory to your Father in heaven". How has God gifted you? Where do you see yourself living out of those gifts? Where might God be inviting you to share your talents and interests? September 10th, we will kick off our Fall schedule with our Sunday Worship at 9 AM, followed by a Potluck Brunch. We'll begin our conversation on spiritual gifts and how they might intersect and connect our lives to enrich our relationship with Christ, our church, and our community! Peace, Pastor Joel

From The President May the favor of the Lord our God rest upon us; establish the work of our hands for us yes, establish the work of our hands. Psalm 90:17 As we begin the month of September, a time of new beginnings, let us consider this verse from Psalm 90. Pastor Skindlov will be discussing, identifying and practicing our giftedness in Jesus Christ. Every talent and skill we have has been given to us by God. We need to recognize what we have and then prayerfully and joyfully share with the world. This is why we are here. Sometimes it is painfully difficult to see how in our busy lives we can possibly find time to do one more thing. You know what? Once you remember that you wouldn t be here at all, but for the love that God has for you, time is found. The Lord wants us to be in community with one another. You can worship Him on Sunday morning, but until you throw yourself into sharing and practicing your talents and skills, you are not living in the community as he wishes. This fall, I hope that we all challenge ourselves to really look around the church, our workplaces and neighborhoods and see what needs are out there. Some tasks will be small and quick and some will require more commitment. We need to search ourselves and seek the Holy Spirit s whisper in our ear and dive in. Practice one skill or talent to benefit others and feel the hand of the Lord on your back. FELLOWSHIP: Companionship, friendship, mutual trust and charitableness between Christians. We are soon entering a new Season with a new Pastor and busy church schedule. With that in mind, the Church Family Fellowship Committee is asking for volunteer "hosts/hostesses" for Coffee Fellowship following Worship. The kitchen is stocked with coffee (regular and decaf), juice mix, paper coffee cups, juice cups, napkins, small plates. The ushers usually plug in the coffee brewer and it's very easy to use. As far as treats go, you can bring healthy treats, sinful treats or a combination of both. If you have any questions you may contact Peggy Renford, Susan Sanborn, Ami Elliott or Rebecca Hendrickson. LET'S WELCOME GUESTS AND STRANGERS TO OUR FELLOWSHIP AT PRINCE OF PEACE. WELCA News The WELCA women begin their autumn schedule. Bible study will start Sept 6, at 9:30 in the sanctuary. There are two extra copies of "Gather" magazine in the library if you need one. Quilters have worked hard over the summer. Baby Quilters meet Sept 12, in the downstairs quilting room. Charity Quilters had two great work days the end of August. They will meet Sept 26. They need more hands on deck to meet their goals for the year. The first sign for the Bazaar is posted near the kitchen. It lists the beans needed to make the 13 bean soup mix. To bring some dried beans is an easy to contribute. This year there will be a supply of gluten free soup mixes. We were told barley contains gluten. Some bags will be barley free. The Bazaar is Nov 4. Mark your calendars now. I've heard of some wonderful handmade items in the works. Sharon Page 4

Mark them for Bishop Kuempel s Installations as we have Pastor Joel s installation that day. Small Groups A Small Group is a time for studying the word, a time for fellowship, and a time for enjoying food with other members of the congregation on a smaller scale. Being part of a small group gives you a chance to know each other, pray for one another and the church, encourage one another, grow in faith, minister to one another and to be dependable and responsible within the group setting. Each person in the small group is accountable within the group to the guidelines they establish. Everyone participates and shares the responsibility for the functioning of the group. This can include attending meetings consistently, making snacks, opening your house to hold a meeting, sharing and praying. If you are part of a small group or want to be part of a small group, please call me. Kathy Fleiger 327-4781. We will get all the interested people on a list and start small groups again. If you are part of a functioning small group, please still call me. That way we have everyone interested on a list to make sure we have enough small groups or maybe we need to start another one. Get involved, be a blessing to others and part of another family. Let s connect with others and experience God in a very real way through small groups. Blessings to all. If you have any questions please, feel free to ask, phone 327-4781, or email me at rkfleigs@comcast.net Page 7
