August 13, 2017 The Nineteenth Sunday in Ordinary Time St. Francis f Assisi Parish Hnring ur Franciscan Traditin Pray and watch at all times! Carry ut steadfastly the wrk yu have begun and fulfill the ministry yu have undertaken in true humility and hly pverty. - St. Clare f Assisi Cme, Jesus said. Online Children s Faith Frmatin Registratin! (pg 2) Frm the Pastr s Desk Last week we celebrated the Feast f the Transfiguratin f the Lrd, s the 18th Sunday in Ordinary Time was nt bserved this year. If we had, we wuld have reflected n the accunt f the feeding f the 5000 in the Gspel f Matthew, therwise knwn as the Miracle f the Laves and the Fishes. Tday s Gspel directly fllws that incident. Out f cnsideratin fr the welfare f the crwds, Jesus pstpnes his need fr prayer, reflectin and slitude. He sends his disciples ahead f him by bat, dismisses the crwd and then withdraws t the muntain t pray. The disciples make little prgress in their jurney due t being buffeted by wind and rain. They d nt express fear until they see Jesus walking tward them n the water - they mistake him fr a ghst. Jesus calls ut t the disciples and calms their fears. He is nt a ghst. St. Peter, as impulsive as ever, seeks prf that the persn is Jesus. He asks Jesus t call him ut nt the water, and Jesus grants his request. St.Peter s fears vertake him and he begins t sink. Jesus reaches ut and saves him. When Jesus and St.Peter enter the bat, St.Matthew reprts that the wind ceases, and the disciples cnfess that Jesus is the Sn f Gd. Faith in Jesus will enable the disciples t d the wrk that Jesus has dne. The disciples can and will participate in the wrk f the Kingdm f Heaven. When St. Peter fears and dubts the persn f Jesus, he falters. Like St. Peter, the Lrd will calm and allay ur fears if we truly accept Him and try t incrprate His Teaching and Gspel Values int ur lives. St. Augustine reminds us that ur prayer shuld always be Lrd we Believe, Help ur Unbelief. Peace and all Gd in the Traditin f St. Francis and St. Clare, Fr. Des.
