Saint Rafael Guizar Valencia Assembly 3018 KNIGHTS OF COLUMBUS Our Lady of Guadalupe Province District 2 San Antonio, Texas The Knights of Columbus...a Catholic, Family, Fraternal, Service Organization Volume 01, Issue 05 May 2007 Navigator s Log We will meet at the May 10th meeting and at that time will discuss the upcoming election, several turnouts and the BAMC mission. We also will provide a light supper at this meeting and hope to continue this after all our meetings. In June, Archbishop Flores and a delegation of Knights and maybe including your Navigator will journey to Jalapa, Mexico, so that the Bishop can return our namesakes ring to the museum there. If anyone would be interested in going, call Robert or Jenifer at 494-3553. Vivat Jesus Your Faithful Navigator John Thabet, PFN, PGK Our Friar has asked the Assembly to take care of the United States Flag flying on the grounds of St. Mark. A recent storm has destroyed the flag and the church needs a new one. Let s talk about this at the May 10th meeting. Vivat Jesus Assembly Membership Goals Assembly membership goals are set each year based on a percentage of the size of the assembly much like supreme sets membership goals for the councils. Our membership goals for 2007 will be based on 10% of our members. Page 1 Page 2 Page 2 Page 3 Page 4 Page 5 Page 6 Page 8 Captain s Corner Faithful Captain Nieves Gonzales, PGK Sir Knights, Our next meeting will be on Thursday May 10, so please attend. We still have not turned out for any event. We need to get prepared because before you know it we will be asked to turn out and I hope many of us will be ready to turn out. Hope to see you all at our Thursday May 10, 2007 meeting. EXEMPLIFICATIONS The next exemplification for 3rd Degree Knights to become 4th Degree Sir Knights will take place in San Antonio on June 23. See Page 7 for more information. FN Log & Captain s Corner Deacons Ordination Badge Information from Comptroller Color Corps Provincial Award Here s Your Sign Did You Know? Schedule

Deacons To Be Ordained at St. Mark On May 19, 27 men will be ordained as Deacons in San Antonio. Even though the Archbishop will be here, I have been told informally that the 4th Degree Knights will not be needed. This is from the coordinator of the event itself. There will be many other opportunities involving our Assembly for a turn-out in the future. Editor The Fourth Degree is the highest and most prestigious degree within the Knights of Columbus. The primary purpose of your membership is to foster the spirit of patriotism in members and the community at large and encourage active Catholic citizenship. As a Fourth Degree Knight you have the opportunity to become part of your assembly's color corps. As a color corps member, you will be recognized widely by the distinctive attire of tuxedo, feathered hat (chapeau), cape and sword. BLOOD DRIVE SUNDAY, MAY 6 AFTER ALL MASSES (EXCEPT 1:00PM) Faithful Comptroller s Ledger Attached is a picture of the Assembly name badge. The cost of a badge is $11.00 for the slip on and $12.00 for a magnetic badge. If you want to purchase a badge respond to this email with the name you want printed on the badge and which style of badge you want. Then mail your check to me, made payable to "Assembly 3018". Upon receipt of your payment I will order you badge. My address is 3038 Shingle Oak Dr., San Antonio, TX 78247-3731. If you have not paid your $25 dues yet, you may do so at the May meeting. We would like to have everyone paid up by then. Fourth Degree cards will be given out along with badge information. Feel free to call me if you have any questions on membership Brian Nelson, PGK Faithful Comptroller 2

Proposed idea only. What if our Assembly started doing this: Attention New Members A 3 X 5 Flag will be awarded to all new members who attend an Assembly Meeting within 90 days of their exemplification Let s talk about it at the next meeting, May 10th. GUIDELINES FOR COLOR CORPS FOURTH DEGREE KNIGHTS OF COLUMBUS PROCESSION The Color Corps precedes the liturgical procession to form an honor guard in the center aisle. 1. It is recommended that an instrumental prelude accompany the entrance of the Knights. 2. The liturgical procession then passes through the honor guard. The Color Corps closes ranks behind the liturgical procession and proceeds to their reserved pews at the rear of the Church. COMMUNION The Knights do not function as a Color Corps during the celebration of the Eucharist, but join the assembly in that full, conscious, and active participation demanded by the very nature of the liturgy. (Constitution on the Sacred Liturgy, #14.) 1. The Color Corps will be the last to receive Communion at the front and center of the liturgical assembly. 2. So that the Knights might have the option of receiving Communion in the hand and from the cup as well, if they wish, it is recommended that they approach Communion without gloves and chapeau. ( Holy Communion has a more complete form as a sign when it is received under both kinds. General Instruction on the Roman Missal, #240.) RECESSION Following the response to the dismissal of the assembly, Thanks be to God, the Color Corps forms an honor guard for the recession. 1. Weather permitting, the Knights proceed directly to the outside of the main entrance where this formation takes place. 2. Weather not permitting, the Knights form an honor guard in the center aisle, closing ranks behind the liturgical procession and following it out of the church. 3

PROVINCIAL AWARD FOR EXCELLENCE The Our Lady of Guadalupe Provincial Award for Excellence for Assemblies was implemented in October 2004. This new award honors Assemblies for achievement in membership gain, patriotic programming, and compliance with required reports. The award is a beautiful shadow box plaque containing a framed picture of our Lady of Guadalupe, a painted metal Fourth Degree Emblem, and an engraved plate displaying the name of the Assembly and the name of the Faithful Navigator. It is pictured below: In order to win this award, a Fourth Degree Assembly must meet the following four requirements: Achieve the Assembly membership intake goal set by Supreme Assembly. This goal is currently set at 10% of membership on roster as of July 1. File Form 186 (Report of Assembly Officers Elected) with Supreme Council, State Council, Vice-Supreme Master and Master of the Fourth Degree for your District by July 1 File Form 1728 C (Annual Survey of Fraternal Activity) with Supreme Council, State Council, Vice-Supreme Master, and Master of the Fourth Degree for your District by January 31 File Form 2321 (Civic Award Application) with Supreme Council, Vice-Supreme Master, and Master of the Fourth Degree for your District by June 30 and be recognized as a winner of the Civic Award by Supreme Council. These four criteria indicate that an Assembly is actively increasing membership, electing Officers, performing charitable & fraternal activities, and conducting Patriotic Programs each year - the main purposes and activities for a Fourth Degree Assembly. We urge every Assembly to meet these four criteria and have your Assembly recognized as a winner of the Our Lady of Guadalupe Provincial Award for Excellence 4

Here s Your Sign Every month we will explore the 4th degree various emblems and jewels and its structure for a better understanding of our assembly. The Triad Emblem of the Fourth Degree of the Knights of Columbus features: the Dove the Cross the Globe The Dove, the classic symbol of the Holy Spirit and Peace, is shown hovering over the orb of the earth or Globe. Both are mounted on a variation of the Crusader's cross, that which was found on the tunics and capes of the Crusading Knights who battled to regain the Holy Land. Our Honored Order cherishes as its patron Christopher Columbus. Christopher...Christ Bearer Columbus...Dove of Peace, symbolizing the Paraclete Spiritually, the sacred symbols on the emblem typify the Union of the Three Divine Persons in one Godhead...the most blessed Trinity. The Globe... God the Father, Creator of the Universe The Cross...God the Son, Redeemer of Mankind The Dove...God the Holy Spirit, Sanctifier of humanity The colors of the symbols are: A Blue Globe with the lands of the Western Hemisphere in White A Red Cross with gold borders, and gold knobs at the ends of the Cross A White Dove. Red, White, and Blue are the colors of the flag of the country in which our Order originated; and are used to stress the basic principle of the Fourth Degree: Patriotism 5

Facts: about Saint Rafael Guizar Valencia Every month we will publish some facts about our saint. Writing about Blessed Rafael, father Maciel, now 86, told of a time when his great uncle took him for a walk in Mexico City. He carried an accordion, which he played very well. I had no idea what he was going to use it for. We arrived a a well-trafficked spot. He took out his accordion and began playing popular songs. People gathered around him in a circle. When the number was substantial, he put aside his accordion and began preaching (about) Christ, said Father Maciel. The Holy Father, on the 25 th anniversary of his pontificate during a private audience with the Supreme Directors of the Knights of Columbus, summed up the Knights when he said, On this occasion I wish to express once more my deep gratitude for the unfailing support which your Order has given to the Church's mission. This support is shown in a special way in the Vicarius Christi Fund, which is a sign of the solidarity of the Knights of Columbus with the Successor of Peter in his concern for the universal Church, but it is also seen in the daily prayers, sacrifices and apostolic works of so many Knights in their local Councils, their parishes and their communities.
