Westland United Methodist Church 09/03/2014 Volume 1, Issue 4 Westland UMC News The Journey Part 1 So I am going to write a book. I have had this outline for a long time. It is going to be about the missional movement church in connection to relationships. For a long time I have contemplated the transference of just a common practice of conversation and meeting people and just how that connects to the missional impact it can have on the church. What I am realizing is that we have lost the true desire to really connect to people. Now I am a tech person. I love social media and all sorts of gadgets but can society really form those deep rooted connections that happen face to face as Christ did when He was in human form. One of the biggest impacts a church can have is through mission but the greater impact is to do mission in context to connecting with a person on a relational level. Relationships open doors to deeper and more intimate connections that reflect the image of Christ in all of us. What I want to do is for the next few months make connections to people by just talking and passionately pouring Christ into them. What I propose is to talk to random people that I do not know just with the intent of forming relationships. It is honestly the best thing not only for what I am working on but also for the church universal. Now I expect to talk to people of all sorts. Some in church but my prayer is more not in relationship with any church. You see my desire is to connect to people who do not know the love and passion that my Savior has for them. I also want to purposefully connect to the people disenfranchised with the church today. I want to hear their heart and understand their hurts but also their desires (changes) for the church today. If you are willing to help me on this let me know. It will be fun, challenging and an eye opening experience. Missional movements are a huge impact on the world but nothing can compare to a relationship with someone as they connect to Christ in a deeper more intimate way. Journey with me as we connect the missional focused moving church to relationships and let s see how God moves. In Christ, Pastor Sean 1

UMW met on August 12 in the CLC with nine members present. President Maureen Grun opened the meeting with prayer and wonderful refreshments were served by Teresa Reed. Maureen read from the current issue of Response magazine. Maureen also presented the program: Calling to Growth. We discussed ways in which we can best use our gifts for our church and our community. Treasurer s Report: Debbie presented the report for Peggy. We have $540 in the joint account and $220 in the pledge account. Peggy will send pledges the first of September. We were also reminded that World Thank Offering will be collected in October. Old Business: We discussed the idea of having a Kitchen Shower for the CLC. We decided to meet on Sept. 20 th @10:00 to clean out drawers and determine items needed for the kitchen. We also were reminded of the Annual Soup and Chili Lunch in November. We decided to hold a fund raiser in September. We will have an old fashioned Ice cream social on Sept. 7 from 4-6. We will ask members of the congregation to bring freezers of homemade ice cream. New Business: Discussion was held about UMW supporting the new Tutoring Ministry at Westland. Ramona will contact Alice Stricklin to find out if there are any specific needs UMW can help with when this ministry begins. The next meeting will be September 9@6:00 in the CLC. Debbie Bowers has the program and Maureen Grun will be the hostess. All women of the church are invited to attend as we strive to be the hands and feet of Christ in our community. Respectfully submitted, 3

Hello! CHAOS student ministry has had a great August, getting back into the groove with school starting. We had a great time at the Wilson County Fair and we recently had an awesome night of fellowship as 12 adults in our congregation were paired with youth as Faith Friends. A huge thank you to everyone who is involved in this ministry! God is definitely working in our midst! Beginning in September, we have some big changes regarding our Kroger Cares program, so I want to share with you how this will work in the future. You no longer need to remember to refill a gift card when shopping at Kroger, so that's the easy part! Now, after a one-time enrollment at www.kroger.com/communityrewards you will be able to help support our youth group simply by scanning your Kroger Plus Card, which most of us do anyway! I will be helping our congregation members enroll online during our fellowship meal in September. If you'd like to go ahead and enroll, you can follow these steps: 1) Visit www.kroger.com/communityrewards 2) Sign in if you have an online Kroger account or create an account (it's free! and you can download digital coupons and keep track of your fuel points). 3) Follow the prompts to create an account and link your Kroger Plus Card (you'll need your Kroger Plus Card number handy). 4) Enroll in the Community Rewards Program by searching for "Westland" and clicking enroll. Please let me know if you have any questions. Once you're enrolled, it's that easy! Just keep shopping! Thanks for all your support! Please be in prayer for our students this school year!
