Our Lady of Czestochowa Catholic Church 120 Sussex Street, Jersey City, NJ 07302 Celebrating Our 100 th Anniversary Our Mission The mission of our Parish is to reach out to all people and encourage them to join us in joyfully giving praise and glory to God; to build a Christian community that, with trust in God, embraces the future, and in doing so, is a beacon of faith, hope and love on the Jersey City waterfront. Our History Our Lady of Czestochowa Church, or OLC, was founded in 1911 to serve Polish immigrants to Jersey City. Today, OLC is growing and changing as it seeks to serve all those who now live in our neighborhood. The Church takes its name from a city in Poland that houses a cherished icon of the Blessed Virgin Mary. A copy of that icon is centrally located in our historic Church. 1911 2011 Rev. Thomas J. A WORD FROM OUR PASTOR Dear Parishioners, Community Builder events were very popular before I arrived. I also believe that events that build community are important and we should celebrate them. We had a great Community Builder event on Sunday, June 12, as we hosted our 2nd Annual Parish Picnic. Contrary to the weather reports that threatened rain, the weather was perfect. Someone must be looking over me, because I have never had one of my picnics rained out. Thank you, Lord! Many people made the day a success, and I wish to mention some of them. Of course, we thank the Prep for the use of their facilities and the staff who set up the tables and chairs. Photos below were from Gabriel Rubin. Music was supplied by B & E Disc Jockeys (Bryan & Eric); and, Tommy Parisi helped with a few solos. Tommy even serenaded Rose Rokosz. Brother Ed Sheehy entertained young and old alike with his Puppets. Maggie Inglese provided balloons for our children. We had great team members who prepared the day before, set-up, cooked and served. Thank you. Special thanks to Kathy and Tad Hendrickson who cooked, slaving over the hot grill, and to our servers who kept the serving line moving. Thanks to all who helped, who came and enjoyed, young and older alike. With love,

MASS INTENTIONS Mass intentions for both 2011 and 2012 are available. Remember a deceased relative or friend by having a Mass offered in their honor and memory. You may also have a Mass celebrated for the health of someone who is ill, in thanksgiving and for special intentions for family and/or friends. It is customary to offer a Mass for the repose of the soul of the deceased when visiting a funeral home. When doing so, the parish provides a Mass Card that you would present to the family. The Mass Card would designate when the Mass will be celebrated. If you wish to have a Mass celebrated, simply stop by the rectory, or call us at 201-434-0798 or send an e-mail to: secretary@olcjc.org. We maintain a living bond with our loved ones as we remember them in prayer. 2011 EVENTS AT OLC This is OLC Presentation, Sunday, June 26, after 10:00 am Mass Gather to Rejoice, Sunday, July 10, 11:15 am Special Mission Appeal, July 17, all Masses Gathering to Prepare, July 23, 10:30 am Gathering to Celebrate, July 24, 10:00 am SUNDAY SCRIPTURE READINGS Reflect on today s readings. We hope you remember to bring your food donation which supports the food pantry at Our Lady of Sorrows Parish. Besides food donations, you can also place a monetary donation in the box on the table in the rear of the church. Let us remember those in need not only during the holiday seasons. There are those who go hungry every day throughout the year. Please, remember the words of the Lord, Whatsoever you do for the least of the brethren, you do for me. WEEKLY OFFERING Thank you so very much for your financial support and for living your financial commitment to your parish. Your support helps us to achieve our weekly collection goal of $6,000 per Sunday. For the weekend of June 18 /19, there were 386 people who attended Mass. Our total weekend collection came to $6,589 (of that amount, $2,152 came from parishioners making their contributions electronically through Parish Pay). This amount is $589 ABOVE our weekly goal of $6,000 per Sunday. As you begin your summer routines, you may find yourself away from OLC on weekends. If so, please remember to be generous when you return. One way for you to support OLC responsibly, particularly during the summer, is through Parish Pay. It is easy to sign up; simply go to our website (www.olcjc.org) and follow the prompts. Parish Pay will charge your credit card or checking account once a month for your donation. To determine your monthly donation, determine what you wish to give OLC for the year. If you wish to tithe, multiply your yearly income by 2% or 3% and divide by 12.. BAPTISM AT OLC We are presenting the first component of our Baptism Preparation Program, entitled Gathering to Rejoice immediately after the 10:00 am Mass on Sunday, July 10. If you are expecting the birth of a child, this program is designed for you. It is a gathering which occurs during your pregnancy. It brings together all parents at OLC who are expecting the birth of a child. This gathering is one of rejoicing, a time to celebrate the new life you are carrying, and the birth you are awaiting. This gathering includes practical information, a special blessing for expectant parents and light refreshments. If you are expecting, please make every effort to attend. Observance of Pope Benedict XVI s 60th Anniversary of Priesthood In a recent letter to the Diocesan Ordinaries from the Congregation for Clergy, it was announced that, June 29 will mark the sixtieth anniversary of the priestly ordination of our beloved Holy Father, Pope Benedict XVI, which took place on the solemnity of Saints Peter and Paul in 1951. On the occasion of the Holy Father s 60th Anniversary of priestly ordination, we pray for him and for all priests.

Yet, just as He provided for the Israelites, God will provide us with all that we need. We in turn must be willing to hold our many gifts not with a clenched fist but rather with an open hand, ready and willing to share.

QUOTES FROM THE GENERAL INSTRUCTION OF THE ROMAN MISSAL Part 6 of 7 Quotes from the General Instruction of the Roman Missal On November 27, 2011, the English speaking Church in the USA will begin using a new translation of the prayers used at Mass (The Roman Missal). A series of quotes explaining the parts of the Mass from the General Instruction of the Roman Missal (GIRM) will be posted here. These explanations are meant to help the reader participate more fully in the Sunday Mass. Please check here weekly. The Eucharistic Prayer Now the center and summit of the entire celebration begins; namely, the Eucharistic Prayer, that is, the prayer of thanksgiving and sanctification. The priest invites the people to lift up their hearts to the Lord in prayer and thanksgiving; he unites the congregation with himself in the prayer that he addresses in the name of the entire community to God the Father through Jesus Christ in the Holy Spirit. Furthermore, the meaning of the Prayer is that the entire congregation of the faithful should join itself with Christ in confessing the great deeds of God and in the offering of Sacrifice. The Eucharistic Prayer demands that all listen to it with reverence and in silence. (GIRM, 78) Communion It is most desirable that the faithful, just as the priest himself is bound to do, receive the Lord s Body from hosts consecrated at the same Mass and that, in the instances when it is permitted, they partake of the chalice, so that even by means of the signs Communion will stand out more clearly as a participation in the sacrifice actually being celebrated. (GIRM, 85) Prepared by the OFFICE OF DIVINE WORSHIP www.romanmissalnewark.org St. Anthony s I Love St. Anthony s Festival To be held, rain or shine, July 8, 9 and 10 on Sixth Street in Jersey City between 5:00 pm and 11:00 pm on Friday and Saturday. All day Sunday starting 1:00 pm Come and join the festivities
