GOD GATHERS HIS PEOPLE Interlude Welcome and Announcements Carolyn McClane, pianist Elder Marianne Sharp, Worship Leader Ringing of the Chimes Prelude Meditation J. Smith Bringing of the Light Michael Eldridge, acolyte Kara Eldridge, crucifer THE WORSHIP OF GOD *Call to Worship One: For being faithful when we are faithless, All: We praise your name. One: For being more ready to forgive than we are to ask, All: We praise your name. One: For rejoicing over one lost sinner who is found, All: We praise your name. *Hymn of Praise No. 514 Blessed Assurance Assurance *Affirmation of Faith Revised Apostle s Creed One: Christians, what do we believe as Cumberland Presbyterians? All: We believe in God, the Father Almighty, creator of heaven and earth, and in Jesus Christ, His only Son, our Lord; who was
conceived by the Holy Spirit, born of the Virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, dead and buried; He descended to the grave. The third day He arose from the dead. He ascended into heaven, where He shall sit at the right hand of God the Father Almighty; from where He shall judge the living and the dead. We believe in the Holy Spirit, the holy universal church, the communion of saints; the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body, and the everlasting life. Amen. *Gloria Patri Glory be to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Ghost; As it was in the beginning, is now and ever shall be, world without end. Amen. Amen. Greatorex Prayers of the People The Lord s Prayer (In Unison) Our Father which art in heaven, hallowed be thy name. Thy kingdom come, thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread and forgive us our debts, as we forgive our debtors. And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil, for thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory, forever. Amen. Musical Response No. 817 (Choir & Congregation) Hear our prayer, O Lord, hear our prayer, O Lord; incline thine ear to us, and grant us thy peace. Amen. Assurance of Pardon I John 1:9 If we confess our sins, God is faithful and just and will forgive us our sins and cleanse us from all unrighteousness. Brothers and sisters, in Jesus Christ your sins are forgiven.
Offertory OUR WORSHIP THROUGH GIVING When I Survery The Wondrous Cross arr. N. Johnson *The Doxology Old Hundredth Praise God from whom all blessings flow; praise him all creatures here below; praise him above, ye heavenly host; praise Father, Son and Holy Ghost. Amen. *Prayer of Dedication and Thanksgiving Jeanie Saunders PRESENTATION OF GOD S WORD Children s Message Marianne Sharp *Hymn of the Word God s Great Love Is So Amazing Converse God's great love is so amazing! See a shepherd with his flocks! Ninety-nine are safely grazing; one is lost among the rocks. That good shepherd goes and searches till he finds the one astray. So God says to fill our churches with the ones who've lost their way. God in love is always seeking! See a woman with her broom! For a single coin she's sweeping every corner of the room. When it's found she calls each neighbor, telling friends from all around. So God says to search and labor till God's precious ones are found. God keeps waiting, searching, yearning! See a father's heartfelt joy! Thankful for his son's returning, he runs out to greet his boy. To the angry older brother, hear the father's patient call. So God says to love each other, for in Christ, God loves us all.
The Reading Of The Word Old Testament Lesson Joshua 5:9-12 Israelites Celebrate Passover 9 Then the LORD said to Joshua, Today I have rolled away the reproach of Egypt from you. So the place has been called Gilgal to this day. 10 On the evening of the fourteenth day of the month, while camped at Gilgal on the plains of Jericho, the Israelites celebrated the Passover. 11 The day after the Passover, that very day, they ate some of the produce of the land: unleavened bread and roasted grain. 12 The manna stopped the day after they ate this food from the land; there was no longer any manna for the Israelites, but that year they ate the produce of Canaan. New Testament Lesson 2 Corinthians 5:16-21 The Ministry of Reconciliation 16 So from now on we regard no one from a worldly point of view. Though we once regarded Christ in this way, we do so no longer. 17 Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, the new creation has come: The old has gone, the new is here! 18 All this is from God, who reconciled us to himself through Christ and gave us the ministry of reconciliation: 19 that God was reconciling the world to himself in Christ, not counting people s sins against them. And he has committed to us the message of reconciliation. 20 We are therefore Christ s ambassadors, as though God were making his appeal through us. We implore you on Christ s behalf: Be reconciled to God. 21 God made him who had no sin to be sin for us, so that in him we might become the righteousness of God. *Gospel Lesson Luke 15:1-3, 11b-32 The Parable of the Prodigal Son Now the tax collectors and sinners were all gathering around to hear Jesus. 2 But the Pharisees and the teachers of the law muttered, This man welcomes sinners and eats with them.
3 Then Jesus told them this parable: There was a man who had two sons. 12 The younger one said to his father, Father, give me my share of the estate. So he divided his property between them. 13 Not long after that, the younger son got together all he had, set off for a distant country and there squandered his wealth in wild living. 14 After he had spent everything, there was a severe famine in that whole country, and he began to be in need. 15 So he went and hired himself out to a citizen of that country, who sent him to his fields to feed pigs. 16 He longed to fill his stomach with the pods that the pigs were eating, but no one gave him anything. 17 When he came to his senses, he said, How many of my father s hired servants have food to spare, and here I am starving to death! 18 I will set out and go back to my father and say to him: Father, I have sinned against heaven and against you. 19 I am no longer worthy to be called your son; make me like one of your hired servants. 20 So he got up and went to his father. But while he was still a long way off, his father saw him and was filled with compassion for him; he ran to his son, threw his arms around him and kissed him. 21 The son said to him, Father, I have sinned against heaven and against you. I am no longer worthy to be called your son. 22 But the father said to his servants, Quick! Bring the best robe and put it on him. Put a ring on his finger and sandals on his feet. 23 Bring the fattened calf and kill it. Let s have a feast and celebrate. 24 For this son of mine was dead and is alive again; he was lost and is found. So they began to celebrate. 25 Meanwhile, the older son was in the field. When he came near the house, he heard music and dancing. 26 So he called one of the servants and asked him what was going on. 27 Your brother has come, he replied, and your father has killed the fattened calf because he has him back safe and sound. 28 The older brother became angry and refused to go in. So his father went out and pleaded with him. 29 But he answered his father, Look! All these years I ve been slaving for you and never disobeyed your orders. Yet you
never gave me even a young goat so I could celebrate with my friends. 30 But when this son of yours who has squandered your property with prostitutes comes home, you kill the fattened calf for him! 31 My son, the father said, you are always with me, and everything I have is yours. 32 But we had to celebrate and be glad, because this brother of yours was dead and is alive again; he was lost and is found. Leader: This is the Word of God for the people of God. People: Thanks be to God. Prayer of the Word Homily Richard Snowden THE SERVICE OF HOLY COMMUNION Anthem The Glory of His Cross arr.
