LESSON: 1. The Introduction (vs 1-2): Dec 14, 164 bc the temple was rebuilt 3 years after the desecration Daniel is reading Jeremiah (Jer 25:12, 29:10) Realized that he was in the middle of God s timeline 609 BC is when it started 539 BC is now 538 People could go back Jeremiah 25:12 (ESV) 12 Then after seventy years are completed, I will punish the king of Babylon and that nation, the land of the Chaldeans, for their iniquity, declares the LORD, making the land an everlasting waste. Jeremiah 29:10 (ESV) 10 For thus says the LORD: When seventy years are completed for Babylon, I will visit you, and I will fulfill to you my promise and bring you back to this place. 2 Chronicles 36:20-21 (ESV) 20 He took into exile in Babylon those who had escaped from the sword, and they became servants to him and to his sons until the establishment of the kingdom of Persia, 21 to fulfill the word of the LORD by the mouth of Jeremiah, until the land had enjoyed its Sabbaths. All the days that it lay desolate it kept Sabbath, to fulfill seventy years. 2. The Prayer (vs 3-19): a. Daniel s response (3-4): Turned attention to God - In Prayer - Pleas for mercy - Fasting - Sackcloth - Ashes - Prayed - Made confession On behalf of the nation It is not a prayer extinguisher he prayed 3x a day this COULD have been the prayer that landed him in the Lion s Den. Request (vs 16-19): Turn your anger & wrath away from Jerusalem Listen to the prayer of your servant Listen to his pleas for mercy Make your face to shine for your own sake Incline your ear and hear Open your eyes and see our desolation Hear Forgive Pay attention and act Delay not for your own sake Page 5
3. The explanation (vs 20-27): a. Intro (20-23) Gabriel comes Was dispatched as soon as Daniel started praying Came swiftly At the time of the evening sacrifice For you are greatly loved Daniel didn t have the complete understanding yet of Jeremiah s prophecy b. 70 sevens Or 70 x 7 = 490 years For: 1. your people to finish the transgressions 2. put an end to sin 3. to atone for iniquity 4. bring in everlasting righteousness 5. to seal both vision and prophet 6. anoint a most holy place 445 BC Decree to rebuild Jerusalem Triumphal entry (Palm Sunday) 70AD Jerusalem Destroyed 1967 Jerusalem established as the city 1 week (7 years) Clock starts 7 weeks (49 years) 62 weeks (434 years) Vs 25 Vs 25 Vs 25 Vs26 V27 ½ week () ½ week () Decree to go out and restore Jerusalem Coming of an anointed one Jerusalem built again, squares, moat, in troubled time Anointed one cut off and shall have nothing. People of the prince who is to come shall destroy the city Shall make a strong covenant with many for one week End to sacrifices Neh 2:1-8 March 5, 444 BC 395 March 30, 33 AD 70 AD Artaxeres decree Walls, temple, and city complete Cut off cutting a covenant Page 6
How can 444 33 AD be 483 years? Note Calendar Differences: Jewish calendar was only 360 days per year thus 484 x 360 = 173,880 Days Gregorian: 444 BC -33 AD = 476 years x 365 = 173,740 + 116 (for leap years) + 24 (March 5-30) = 173,880 days. http://media.alwaysbeready.com/library/campbell-charlie/studiestopical/prophecy/bible%20prophecy%2c%20class%20e%2c%20the%20tribulation%2c%20dan iel%5c%27s%20seventy%20weeks%20timeline%20%5bconverted%5d.pdf Page 7
