August 16th, 2015 The 20th Sunday in Ordinary Time 6 The long and the short of it : Somebody once said that There is only one day in all 365 and a quarter that nobody wears shorts on Long Island, we re just not sure what that day is. Now I know that there are shorts and there are shorts, ranging from classic Bermuda shorts to Daisy Dukes. I ve seen both in church. The A/C in church is pretty much now on all the time, and I would wonder if any form of shorts and sleeveless t-shirts are either really necessary temperature-wise, or even appropriate for the House of God? Making contact Just recently Bishop Murphy sent a letter to all the priests of the Diocese on the topic of accessibility, or getting in touch with a priest in the Parish. Our Parish Office is manned ( more accurately, womanned ) Monday through Saturday beginning at 9 AM and ending generally at 5 PM, depending on holidays, holy days, summer hours, lunch hour, etc; and the phone will be answered by a live person. When the office is closed a voice mail message takes over after several rings. You will be directed to various options, including a direct access to phone extensions by last name, including the priests ( Hewes, Sikorski, etc.) If you wish to leave a general, non-urgent, message for anyone in the Parish Office the extension is 126, which is that of the Pastor s Secretary. Our Mass schedule is also directly accessible by hitting 4. There is also a number given to reach a priest for Sick Call/Last Rites emergencies. Father Hewes

August 16th, 2015 The 20th Sunday in Ordinary Time 7 RELIGIOUS EDUCATION The Place for Learning and Praying Our Family/Children s Mass is Sunday at 9:30 a.m. Mary Donaldson, Director, Rita Minder, Assistant Religion Office Phone 864-3321 Fax 499-1530 Email: maryccd@smrcc.org. LOOKING AHEAD Registration forms for the upcoming Fall/Winter Program (September 2015 thru April 2016) grades two through eight, are coming in at a steady pace. Please return these orange forms as soon as possible. When registering a new student, 1st thru 8th grade, you must come into the Religion Office, on the second floor of the Parish Center, Monday through Thursday, between 11:00AM and 4:00PM. Please be sure to bring a copy of the child s Baptismal Certificate when you come. The fee of $175.00 per child is due at that time. SUMMER PROGRAM Our Summer Program 2015 officially ends today. It was a great two weeks thanks to Fr. Hewes, the teachers, helpers, students, staff and the parents. Last week we had a visit from Police Officer, Antoinette Semetsis and Police Officer Elisa McVeigh who spoke to the students about Cyber Tech Safety and Cyber Bullying. Officer Antoinette s presentation was very enlightening, not just to the students but to the helpers and the teachers as well. TEACHERS While I realize that it is still the summer, we are looking ahead to the 2015-2016 Winter Program that begins on September 28th and runs through the end of April 2016. Teachers are always needed. If you are so inclined, please call the Religion office, we would love to have you join us. NOTE: The Religion Office will be closed next week Monday, August 17th thru Friday, August 21st. The theme of our Summer Program this year was Living In God s Creation. If you get a chance, take a look at the Religious Education case on the first floor inside the double doors by the staircase. Mr. Luis Flores did a great job capturing our Summer Program theme. He also did an amazing job replicating Noah s Ark up on the second floor of the Parish Center. Who knew Mr. Flores had such talent!

They provide maternity housing, medical care referrals, cribs, car seats, diapers and ALL other baby items that are needed. Remember that all it takes is your change in a baby bottle and heartfelt prayer to make a big, positive difference for all those we serve. May every drop of a coin remind you to pray with our whole heart for the lives of our pre born children. LIFE CENTER OF LONG ISLAND BABY BOTTLE CAMPAIGN Over the years the parishioners of Saint Matthew have been generous in supporting the work of the Life Center, a pregnancy care center with four locations serving Long Island in Deer Park, Hempstead, Massapequa and Riverhead. We thank you for your donations of baby clothes, diapers, infant formula and financial gifts. The work of the Life Center is always expanding. We need your help to ensure we have the resources we need to continue to provide the level of service that our clients deserve. The Life Center is supported entirely by charitable gifts from people like you who call Long Island home. The baby bottle campaign is one of our largest fundraisers. Fr. Hewes has given us the opportunity to invite you to join in that campaign. If you have not yet done so, as you leave church today please take home an empty baby bottle (in the vestibule of the church). Over the next several weeks you are asked to fill it with your change and return it to church on the weekend of September 12 th & 13 th. You ll find a prayer attached to the bottle and we ask you to say that prayer often, even daily for God s blessing on the work of the Life Center and the precious men, women and children we serve. Please join the millions worldwide who pray each day for the monthly prayer intentions of Pope Francis. Since 1844 the members of the Apostleship of Prayer have offered themselves to God for the salvation of souls, the Church, the intentions of all Apostles of Prayer, and the intentions of the Pope. DAILY OFFERING PRAYER God, our Father, I offer You my day. I offer You my prayers, thoughts, words, actions, joys, and sufferings in union with Your Son Jesus' Heart, who continues to offer Himself in the Eucharist for the salvation of the world. May the Holy Spirit, who guided Jesus, be my guide and my strength today so that I may witness to Your love. With Mary, the mother of our Lord and of the Church, I pray especially for this month's intentions as proposed by the Holy Father. Amen. August Universal: That volunteers may give themselves generously to the service of the needy. Evangelization: That setting aside our very selves we may learn to be neighbors to those who find themselves on the margins of human life and society.

August 16th, 2015 The 20th Sunday in Ordinary Time 15 Catholics For Freedom of Religion "Freedom of Conscience" definition: The right to follow one's own beliefs in matters of religion and morality. Oxford Dictionary Atlanta Fire Chief Fired: Fire Chief Kevin Cochran lost his job because, on his own time, he self-published a men's devotional book that briefly mentions the biblical view of sex as reserved for marriage between one man and one woman. Cochran was ordered to complete "sensitivity training" after complaints from activists who objected to his Christian views. An investigation concluded that Cochran did not discriminate against anyone but the mayor fired him anyway. "Your action against Chief Cochran appears to violate fundamental principles of free speech and religious freedom. The only way Chief Cochran could avoid his views would be to disown his religion..." said Georgia's congressional delegation. Chief Cochran is appealing his termination. (ADF.org, 4/9/15; washingtonpost.com, 2/8/15) Supreme Court Victory: A small church in Gilbert, AZ, uses signs to invite & direct the community to it's services but was restricted to small, 6 sq. ft. 14 hour display temporary signs while home association 80 sq. ft., political 32 sq. ft., and ideological 20 sq. ft. signs are permitted for display indefinitely. In a unanimous decision, the U.S. Supreme Court decisively affirmed that the government cannot play favorites when it comes to free speech. "The government (ordinance) cannot target one form of speech with severe restrictions while allowing more speech for others in similar circumstances," said Alliance Defending Freedom Senior Counsel, Jeremy Tedesco.
