June 4, 2017 Pentecost Sunday 5 Dear Friends, Today s great feast of Pentecost ( The 50 th Day, also known traditionally in England and Ireland as Whitsunday ) marks the end of the Easter Season on the Church s calendar. The Scriptures tell us that at the very time when crowds of devout Jews from every nation under heaven were celebrating the Feast of Weeks (or Shavuot : the 7 weeks after Passover) that recalled the giving of the Law on Mount Sinai to Moses; the Apostles (along with Mary and other disciples) were given the dramatic outpouring of the Holy Spirit in a new sign of wind and flames that marked the creation of the New Israel: the Church. The account tells that somehow by divine grace, the Apostles could be understood by speakers of many different languages in a reversal of Babel, when all the languages of man were confused. Now, on this day, one speech and one voice is heard. Pentecost is often referred to as the Birthday of the Church : the day when the Church, by the Apostles Spirit -filled courageous preaching, began her mission of evangelization to the entire world. That mission goes on even now; not only in far away places with strange sounding names, but right here in our own neighborhood. The Church does this by its celebration of the Sacraments, her preaching, and the witness of you, her children. The lovely sign of the recent First Communions, with hundreds of children receiving Holy Communion for the first time, so beautifully dressed and seen by friends and neighbors. That is a sign of the Church s life. Also, our recently Confirmed are signs of the life of the Spirit in human souls. The good work and labor of Mary Donaldson, Rita Minder, Carmela Sposato and our Religious Education catechists and staff are signs of the Holy Spirit in these celebrations. The charity and care of our Outreach Ministry under Sister Kay and her helpers are another such sign; as well as our Saint Vincent depaul Society under John Gatto s leadership. The ministry of our priests and deacons; and, so often, the simple acts of faith, hope, and charity that you do that so inspire me are other such signs. We pray this day Come, Holy Spirit, and fill the hearts of your faithful, and enkindle in them the fire of your love! God s blessings, Fr. Hewes This and That Corpus Christi Sunday, June 18 th, again this year we will specially mark this beautiful feast in honor of Our Lord s abiding presence in His Holy Eucharist at the 12:30 PM Mass which, as last year, will be offered in the Extraordinary Form of the Roman Rite (a beautifully sung traditional Latin High Mass) with our Adult Choir, and vocalists. Booklets with the texts of the Mass in English will be available. This Mass will be in place of the regular 12:30 PM Latin Mass in the Chapel and will be the High Mass of the Sunday. It will also mark the end for the summer of the Adult Choir and vocalists singing at the 11 AM Mass, which will resume in the fall.

Use Your IRA for Your Gift Now and-or for Your Estate Gift! If you would like to make a gift now using your IRA and if: June 4, 2017 Pentecost Sunday 10 You are at least 70 1/2 years old and don't exceed your maximum of $100,000 per year in qualified charitable distributions, you will not have to report your distribution as income. It will be free of federal and New York State income tax, and it will count toward your required minimum distribution (RMD). The best way to start is with your IRA custodian. Tell them you want to make a "qualified charitable distribution. In most cases, you will only have to fill out a simple form. Very important! Your gift must go directly from your IRA to the Parish. If you receive the money first, you ll be taxed on it. If you make an estate gift you can make your Parish a beneficiary of your IRA and your loved ones will not have to pay income tax on their proceeds. June 4, 2017 Pentecost Sunday 11 SENIORS YES Group News Our recent trip to the Sands Casino in PA was enjoyable and even those who did not win said that they had a great time and asked when we would go again. I really wasn't planning on it but if there is enough interest, probably in August. The plan is still in the works for the July Greenport trip. The fly in the ointment is that the restaurant did extensive remodeling and are somewhat behind so they have not gotten back to me on details. I can t book the winery until I get confirmation from the restaurant. I will let you know as soon as I have any information. It is almost the end of the season for the YES group and we will be left to our own devices over the summer, so I hope that many of you will be joining us on these trips. You need not be a member of YES to attend these or any of our events. All are welcome. June15th is our regular meeting and our last event of the season will be our luncheon at the Bonwit Inn on June 22. Remember to pray for those who are ill and for their loving caregivers. Pray always for those who protect us, and for this wonderful free country that we are blessed to live in. God bless America. See you in church. June 4, 2017 Pentecost Sunday 15 Catholics For Freedom of Religion www.cffor.org Teachers may meet with other teachers for prayer or Bible study to the same extent that they may engage in other conversation or nonreligious activities." from Free To Speak, Guidelines from U.S. Department of Education School to Teacher: Don't Pray for your Colleagues: Maine: H.S. educational technician, Toni Richardson, filed charges of religious discrimination and retaliation with the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission (EEOC) in May, after being instructed to never use phrases like, "I will pray for you" and "You are in my prayers" in private conversations with coworkers. Toni had tried to privately encourage a coworker with whom she attends church, by saying, "I will pray for you." Yet months later, after a falling out, this coworker lodged a complaint against her and the school gave Toni an official "coaching memorandum" which told her that stating, 'you were in my prayers', is not acceptable. The memorandum said that she could not use "phrases that integrate public and private belief systems" while at school. The memo specifically explains she will face discipline or dismissal in the future for using these phrases. "What Augusta Public Schools did by punishing Toni for discussing her faith in a private conversation with a coworker is unconscionable," said a Maine law firm. "The law is clear: employers cannot discriminate against employees who privately discuss their faith while at work." "School employees are not required to hide their faith from each other while on campus," said First Liberty Senior Counsel. (apnews.com, 5/16/17; mainepublic.org, 5/17/17; frc.org, 5/19/17) "Have no anxiety at all, but in everything, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, make your requests known to God."
