Biblical Dramatization 1 Abraham and Lot Play (Genesis 11-19) Parts: Lord (1 st half) Lord (2 nd half) - Narrator 1- Narrator 2 - Abram/Abraham - Sarai/Sarah - Lot - Lot s wife - Pharaoh - Angel A - Angel B - Other Angel - Hagar- Bad man 1 - Bad man 2 - Abram s shepherd - Other shepherd - Lot s shepherd - This is the genealogy of Terah: Terah begot Abram, Nahor, and Haran. Haran begot Lot. And Haran died before his father Terah in his native land, in Ur of the Chaldeans. Then Abram and Nahor took wives: the name of Abram's wife was Sarai, and the name of Nahor's wife, Milcah, the daughter of Haran the father of Milcah and the father of Iscah. But Sarai was barren; she had no child. And Terah took his son Abram and his grandson Lot, the son of Haran, and his daughter-in-law Sarai, his son Abram's wife, and they went out with them from Ur of the Chaldeans to go to the land of Canaan; and they came to Haran and dwelt there. So the days of Terah were two hundred and five years, and Terah died in Haran. (Abram, Sarai, Lot, Abram s shepherds, and Lot s shepherd travel from Ur to Haran) Get out of your country, From your family And from your father's house, To a land that I will show you. I will make you a great nation; I will bless you And make your name great; And you shall be a blessing. I will bless those who bless you, And I will curse him who curses you; And in you all the families of the earth shall be blessed.

Biblical Dramatization 2 So Abram departed as the LORD had spoken to him, and Lot went with him. And Abram was seventy-five years old when he departed from Haran. (Abram and company travel from Haran to Canaan) Then Abram took Sarai his wife and Lot his brother's son, and all their possessions that they had gathered, and the people whom they had acquired in Haran, and they departed to go to the land of Canaan. So they came to the land of Canaan. (LORD appears to Abram.) To your descendants I will give this land. Come let s build an altar to the LORD. Then Abram journeyed, going on still toward the South. Now there was a famine in the land, and Abram went down to Egypt to dwell there, for the famine was severe in the land. (Travels stop) Sarai, you are beautiful and when the Egyptians see you they ll kill me so they can marry you. Please say you are my sister. I love you and I want to stay alive to be with you. (Travels continue) So it was, when Abram came into Egypt, that the Egyptians saw the woman, that she was very beautiful. Pharaoh: (Stop in front of Pharaoh) What a beautiful woman you are.

Biblical Dramatization 3 Sarai: Pharaoh: Pharaoh: I m Abram s sister. Abram, it would be a great honor to me to have your sister in my house. I will have your sister and I will give you sheep, oxen, donkeys, camels and servants. (Abram and his followers move a little away and camp.) But the LORD plagued Pharaoh and his house with great plagues because of Sarai, Abram's wife. Abram, why didn t you tell me that she was your wife? I ve had all kinds of plagues because of her. Now take her and go away. Then Abram went up from Egypt, he and his wife and all that he had, and Lot with him, to the South. (Travel to Canaan) Abram was very rich in livestock, in silver, and in gold. And he went on his journey from the South as far as Bethel, to the place where his tent had been at the beginning, between Bethel and Ai, to the place of the altar which he had made there at first. And there Abram called on the name of the LORD. Come, my family, we will worship the Lord. (Sing Worship the Lord in the beauty of holiness ) Lot also, who went with Abram, had flocks and herds and tents. Now the land was not able to support them, that they might dwell together, for their possessions were so great that they could not dwell together.

Biblical Dramatization 4 Abram s Shepherd: You get out of here. This is our pasture. Lot s Shepherd: No, you get out. Your sheep are drinking up all our water. Let s not fight. Let s each choose where we want to live. You pick what you want first. O.K. I want this beautiful valley. It seems to have two nice cities, Sodom and Gomorrah. Fine, I ll live in this mountain area. I like living up high. It reminds me of being near the Lord. (Lot and followers move to Sodom area. Abraham remains standing and Abraham s family moves to the side) But the men of Sodom were exceedingly wicked and sinful against the LORD. (Lord appears to Abram.) Lift your eyes now and look from the place where you are; northward, southward, eastward, and westward; for all the land which you see I give to you and your descendants forever. And I will make your descendants as the dust of the earth; so that if a man could number the dust of the earth, then your descendants also could be numbered. Arise, walk in the land through its length and its width, for I give it to you. Come, we are moving to the terebinth trees of Mamre. (Travel to tent)

Biblical Dramatization 5 Let s build an altar to the Lord. (Sing Heavenly Father and all enter tent) And the king of Sodom, the king of Gomorrah, the king of Admah, the king of Zeboiim, and the king of Bela (that is, Zoar) went out and joined together in battle in the Valley of Siddim against Chedorlaomer king of Elam, Tidal king of nations, Amraphel king of Shinar, and Arioch king of Ellasar; four kings against five. Now the Valley of Siddim was full of asphalt pits; and the kings of Sodom and Gomorrah fled; some fell there, and the remainder fled to the mountains. Then they took all the goods of Sodom and Gomorrah, and all their provisions, and went their way. They also took Lot, Abram's brother's son who dwelt in Sodom, and his goods, and departed. (Lot and followers leave. One man escapes.) Then one who had escaped came and told Abram the Hebrew, for he dwelt by the terebinth trees of Mamre. Lot s Shepherd: Oh, Abram, Lot has been captured. Quick, we must go rescue Lot. (Abram and his followers go and take Lot and his followers back to Sodom.) Thank you so much for rescuing us and bringing us all safely back home. (Abram and followers return to Mamre. Followers in tent. Abram outside) After these things the word of the LORD came to Abram in a vision. (Lord appears)

Biblical Dramatization 6 Sarai: Hagar: Sarai: Do not be afraid, Abram. I am your shield, your exceedingly great reward. But Lord I don t have any children. Look now toward heaven, and count the stars if you are able to number them. So shall your descendants be. One who will come from your own body shall be your heir. To your descendants I have given this land. I believe you, Lord. (Lord leaves and Sarai comes out of tent to join Abram.) I m sorry I haven t had any children. Why don t you get Hagar to have a child for you? (Abram enters tent) Then Sarai, Abram's wife, took Hagar her maid, the Egyptian, and gave her to her husband Abram to be his wife. So he went in to Hagar, and she conceived. And when she saw that she had conceived, her mistress became despised in her eyes. (Hagar comes out of the tent.) I m having a baby and you re not. (Sarai stands at tent door talking to Abram who is inside.) It s not fair. Hagar thinks she s high and mighty because she s having a baby and I m not.

Biblical Dramatization 7 Sarai: Angel A: Hagar: Angel A: She s your servant. Do whatever you want with her. (Sarai turns to Hagar.) Get out of here. You re supposed to treat me with respect and you didn t. So leave. (Hagar runs away. Everyone else in tent) (Angel appears.) Why are you here? I m running away from my mistress Sarai. She was mean to me. You are her servant. It is your job to treat her with respect. Now go back. You will have a son and his name will be Ishmael. I will make a great nation from your descendants. (Hagar goes back to the tent.) So Hagar bore Abram a son; and Abram named his son, whom Hagar bore, Ishmael. Abram was eighty-six years old when Hagar bore Ishmael to Abram. (Pause. Abram comes out of tent) When Abram was ninety-nine years old, the LORD appeared to Abram. (Lord appears) I am Almighty God; walk before Me and be blameless. And I will make My covenant between Me and you, and will multiply you exceedingly. (Abram falls on his face)

Biblical Dramatization 8 As for Me, behold, My covenant is with you, and you shall be a father of many nations. No longer shall your name be called Abram, but your name shall be Abraham; for I have made you a father of many nations. I will make you exceedingly fruitful; and I will make nations of you, and kings shall come from you. And I will establish My covenant between Me and you and your descendants after you in their generations, for an everlasting covenant, to be God to you and your descendants after you. Also I give to you and your descendants after you the land in which you are a stranger, all the land of Canaan, as an everlasting possession; and I will be their God. As for you, you shall keep My covenant, you and your descendants after you throughout their generations. As for Sarai your wife, you shall not call her name Sarai, but Sarah shall be her name. And I will bless her and also give you a son by her; then I will bless her, and she shall be a mother of nations; kings of peoples shall be from her. (Abraham laughs) How can we have a son when I m 100 and my wife is 90? Sarah your wife shall bear you a son, and you shall call his name Isaac; I will establish My covenant with him for an everlasting covenant, and with his descendants after him. My covenant I will establish with Isaac, whom Sarah shall bear to you at this set time next year. (Lord leaves and Abraham goes into the tent) (Abraham comes to the door of the tent and the Lord and 2 angels appear) (Abraham runs out and bows to the ground, then rises and speaks.) Please Lord, stay a while. I ll get water so you can wash your feet. And we ll have bread and meat. Yes, we will stay. (Abraham goes into the tent.) So Abraham hurried into the tent to Sarah and said, "Quickly, make ready three measures of fine meal; knead it and make cakes." And Abraham ran to the herd, took a tender and good calf, gave it to a young man, and he hastened to prepare it. So he took butter and milk and the calf which he had prepared, and set it before them; and he stood by them under the tree as they ate.

Biblical Dramatization 9 Sarah: (Abraham comes out with the food) Where is Sarah your wife? In the tent. I will certainly return to you according to the time of life, and behold, Sarah your wife shall have a son. (Sarah was listening in the tent door which was behind him and laughed.) How can I have a son when I m so old? Why did Sarah laugh, saying, 'Shall I surely bear a child, since I am old?' Is anything too hard for the LORD? At the appointed time I will return to you, according to the time of life, and Sarah shall have a son. Then the men rose from there and looked toward Sodom, and Abraham went with them to send them on the way. (Abraham and Lord look towards Sodom and Gomorrah) Because the outcry against Sodom and Gomorrah is great, and because their sin is very grave, I will go down now and see whether they have done altogether according to the outcry against it that has come to Me; and if not, I will know. (Angels turn away from there and went toward Sodom, but Abraham still stands before the LORD.) Would You also destroy the righteous with the wicked? What if there are 50 good people?

Biblical Dramatization 10 Angel B: If I find in Sodom fifty righteous within the city, then I will spare all the place for their sakes." I know I am only dust, but let me ask again. What if there were 5 less than that? I would not destroy it for their sake. But what if there were 5 less than that? I would not destroy it for their sake. Please don t be angry. I will ask just once more. Suppose there are only 10 good people? I will not destroy it for the sake of ten. (Lord leaves and Abraham enters tent.) (Scene change - entrance to Sodom with Lot s house in the background. Lot sitting by city gate.) (Angels approach Lot.) Welcome. Come stay with me. No thank you. We ll sleep in the city square. No, really, it will be much better if you stay with me.

Biblical Dramatization 11 Bad Man 1: Bad Man 2: (Enter Lot s house) Those visitors are in there. Let s go get them. (Men beat on Lot s door.) Send those men out so we can see them. (Lot steps out) I know you want to hurt them. Go away. But the men said, This one, Lot, came in to sojourn, and he keeps acting as a judge; now we will deal worse with you than with them. (Men shake fists at Lot and angels pull Lot inside the house.) The angels struck the men who were at the doorway of the house with blindness, both small and great, so that they became weary trying to find the door. Then the angels said to Lot, "Have you anyone else here? Son-in-law, your sons, your daughters, and whomever you have in the city; take them out of this place! "For we will destroy this place, because the outcry against them has grown great before the face of the LORD, and the LORD has sent us to destroy it." So Lot went out and spoke to his sons-in-law, who had married his daughters. (Lot pretends to knock on a couple doors and calls out.) Come on. Get out of this place. The Lord is going to destroy this city. (Lot returns to his house.)

Biblical Dramatization 12 But to his sons-in-law he seemed to be joking. When the morning dawned, the angels urged Lot to hurry, saying, "Arise, take your wife and your two daughters who are here, lest you be consumed in the punishment of the city." (Angels take Lot, his wife and daughters by the hands and leave the city.) And while he lingered, the angels took hold of his hand, his wife's hand, and the hands of his two daughters, the LORD being merciful to him, and they brought him out and set him outside the city. So it came to pass, when they had brought them outside, that the angel said, "Escape for your life! Do not look behind you nor stay anywhere in the plain. Escape to the mountains, lest you be destroyed." Please, no. I don t want to go to the mountains. Something bad might happen if I have to go that far. Can t I please go to Zoar instead? And the angel said to him, "See, I have favored you concerning this thing also, in that I will not overthrow this city for which you have spoken. Hurry, escape there. For I cannot do anything until you arrive there. The sun had risen upon the earth when Lot entered Zoar. Then the LORD rained brimstone and fire on Sodom and Gomorrah, from the LORD out of the heavens. So He overthrew those cities, all the plain, all the inhabitants of the cities, and what grew on the ground. But his wife looked back behind him, and she became a pillar of salt. (PAUSE) (Lot s wife looks back and turns to stone.) And Abraham went early in the morning to the place where he had stood before the LORD. Then he looked toward Sodom and Gomorrah, and toward all the land of the plain; and he saw, and behold, the smoke of the land which went up like the smoke of a furnace. And it came to pass, when God destroyed the cities of the plain, that God remembered Abraham, and sent Lot out of the midst of the overthrow, when He overthrew the cities in which Lot had dwelt. (The End)
