February 5, 2017 5TH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME Dear Parishioners, On Thursday, February 2, we had one last taste of Christmas for the year with the Feast of the Presentation of the Lord, also called the Purification of the Blessed Virgin Mary. On this day, forty days after Christmas, the Christ child is presented in the Temple in fulfillment of the Mosaic Law, and Simeon acknowledges Him as a light for revelation to the Gentiles and for glory to your people Israel (Luke 2:32 RSV). In the Gospel for the Fifth Sunday of Time throughout the Year, the Lord tells us that we are the light of the world and exhorts us to let your light so shine before men, that they many see your good works and give glory to your Father who is in heaven (Matthew 5:14, 16). I think the following prayer is a great way to help each of us live this out. It was composed by the English Blessed, John Henry Cardinal Newman and was adopted by Saint Mother Theresa of Calcutta who prayed it each day after Mass. Her Missionaries of Charity do the same even today. Would you consider joining me in adopting the practice for ourselves? God bless you and keep you in His care, Father Cibelli Radiating Christ Dear Jesus, help me to spread Your fragrance everywhere I go. Flood my soul with Your spirit and life. Penetrate and possess my whole being so utterly that all my life may only be a radiance of Yours. Shine through me and be so in me that every soul I come in contact with may feel Your presence in my soul. Let them look up and see no longer me but only Jesus! Stay with me and then I shall begin to shine as You shine, so to shine as to be a light to others; the light, O Jesus, will be all from You; none of it will be mine: it will be You shining on others through me. Let me thus praise You in the way You love best: by shining on those around me. Let me preach You without preaching, not by words, but by my example, by the catching force, the sympathetic influence of what I do, the evident fullness of the love my heart bears to You.

Announcement of Easter and the Moveable Feasts (for the year 2017) After the Gospel on the Feast of the Epiphany is sung the following: Know, dear brothers and sisters, that, as we have rejoiced at the Nativity of our Lord Jesus Christ, so by leave of God's mercy we announce to you also the joy of his Resurrection, who is our Savior. On the first day of March will fall Ash Wednesday, and the beginning of the fast of the most sacred Lenten season. On the sixteenth day of April you will celebrate with joy Easter Day, the Paschal feast of our Lord Jesus Christ. On the twenty-eighth day of May will be the Ascension of our Lord Jesus Christ. On the forth day of June, the feast of Pentecost. On the eighteenth day of June the feast of the Most Holy Body and Blood of Christ. On the third day of December, the First Sunday of the Advent of our Lord Jesus Christ, to whom is honor and glory for ever and ever. Amen. ASK THE PRIEST Father, In the Apostles Creed, can you explain the line: Jesus descended into hell vs. Jesus descended to the dead. How can it be hell, if Jesus was present there? This question is answered very well in the Catechism of the Catholic Church paragraphs 632-635. Your question has to do with the translation of the word, hell. The word, hell, in English is generally understood to mean the place where those who die in a state of mortal sin go to suffer the everlasting punishment of separation from God. Originally, the Hebrew word, sheol and the Greek word, hades simply meant the abode of the dead with not real connotation of everlasting pain and torment. The distinction between the realm of the dead and the realm of the punishment of the unjust is made very clear in Jesus story about Lazarus and the rich man. (Luke 16:19ff). Lazarus is in the bosom of Abraham and the rich man is in a place of everlasting torment and pain. By their sin, Adam and Eve closed the doors to Paradise and they were not reopened until the Resurrection of Jesus from the dead. By His dying and rising, Jesus opened the gates of heaven to all the righteous souls (like Lazarus) who had awaited the coming of Jesus. This is the meaning of the phrase, He descended into hell or to the dead. The second attempt is a more precise translation of the Greek word, hades. In paragraph 633, it states "It is precisely these holy souls, who awaited their Savior in Abraham's bosom, whom Christ the Lord delivered when he descended into hell." Jesus did not descend into hell to deliver the damned, nor to destroy the hell of damnation, but to free the just who had gone before him. Ask The Priest is a continuing feature of the Bulletin. If you have a question regarding the Catholic faith, please place your question in the box on the back table.

The Sacrament of Baptism Baptism is God's most beautiful and magnificent gift. We call it gift, grace, anointing, enlightenment, garment of immortality, bath of rebirth, seal, and most precious gift. It is called gift because it is conferred on those who bring nothing of their own; grace since it is given even to the guilty; Baptism because sin is buried in the water; anointing for it is priestly and royal as are those who are anointed; enlightenment because it radiates light; clothing since it veils our shame; bath because it washes; and seal as it is our guard and the sign of God's Lordship. St. Mary s offers the gift of baptism on the second and fourth Saturdays of each month at 12:30pm. Baptism Class is scheduled the first Sunday of each month in the Conference Room of the Parish Center from 12:30 to 1:30pm. It is very important that babies be baptized as soon as possible and preferably within six weeks of birth. Therefore, Fr. Cibelli is offering this sacrament more often. A good precedence would be, as soon as parents begin to announce their pregnancy, to call and schedule their baptism agenda shortly after. Call the Parish Office 301-739-0390 ext. 110, Paula will assist you.
