Watch It! The following material is covered in the teaching video, Lesson 2. Play DVD The following material is covered in the Teaching Video, Lesson 2. Word of the Day: Love is kind. Definition: Kind considerate, loving; doing something for someone without expecting anything in return This week s Bible Verse: Love is patient and kind... I Corinthians 13:4a (ICB) Bible Lesson: Jesus Heals on the Sabbath Mark 2:23-3:6 (NLT) One day Jesus and His disciples were picking grain to eat on the Sabbath. The Sabbath was the Jewish day of rest and a day to focus only on God. People weren t supposed to do any sort of work on the Sabbath, including picking grain. Remember the Pharisees, the group of religious guys who were trying to trick Jesus into breaking God s laws? These guys saw what Jesus and His disciples were doing and asked Jesus if He thought it was wrong for His disciples to pick grain on the Sabbath even though the disciples were very hungry. Jesus reminded them that many people had done things on the Sabbath and God s desire was for kindness and mercy for others everyday. Jesus said that if someone is in need, they should be helped no matter what day it is. Another time Jesus was walking through the Synagogue, a place for worship. He noticed a man with a crippled hand. It again was the Sabbath so the religious leaders were watching Jesus very BFF/Gr1-2 /Week 2 2 Saddleback Church 2009
closely. Would Jesus heal the man s hand on the Sabbath? If He did, the religious leaders planned to accuse Jesus of breaking God s law. According to the Pharisees, no one should do work on the Sabbath. Jesus said to the hurting man, Come and stand in front of everyone. Then He turned to the religious leaders and asked. Is it legal to do good deeds on the Sabbath or is it a day for doing harm? Is this a day to save life or to destroy it? But they would not answer Him. Jesus looked around at them very upset because they had unkind hearts. Then Jesus said to the man, Reach out your hand. The man reached out his hand and it became normal again! Jesus wanted everyone to know that the Sabbath was a day when God s work should be done and healing was definitely God s work! Big Idea: Love is patient and kind. In this story, Jesus did not do what the religious leaders wanted, which was to ignore the man because it was the wrong day to heal him. Instead, Jesus was kind to the man with the crippled hand. What an awesome miracle and act of kindness! Jesus knew it was more important to be kind and to heal on the Sabbath than to worry about what the Pharisees thought of Him. Jesus could have walked past the man and waited until it was more convenient or a better time, but He didn t wait. He chose the right time to be kind. Jesus is the ultimate example of a BFF because He stopped everything he was doing and took care of those around him by showing patience and kindness. Application: How can we love like Jesus? It might seem easier to ignore someone who is in need because it isn t convenient or easy. In fact, sometimes in our busy and rushed lives we can actually miss out on an opportunity to help someone who really could use assistance, just because we aren t paying attention! Next time you are busy and you feel God tugging at your heart to stop what you are doing and be kind to someone, take that challenge and show love to a person in need. A BFF knows that God wants us to be patient in busy times and show kindness to others. How can we love like Jesus? Play It! Slides 15-17 Game: Speed Beach Ball Toss Overview: Children will think of ways to be kind through tossing a beach ball in small groups. Materials Needed: A few inflated beach balls Instructions: Divide the class evenly into groups and have them sit in circles. Give each group a beach ball. The first person says a way they can be kind to others and then tosses the ball across the circle to another member of their group. The first group to have all the members say something kind they can do wins! Leader: That was a fun way for us to think about how we can be kind to others. There were some great suggestions. Now I challenge you to put those ideas into action! Remember, kindness is love in action and God wants us to love others through being kind. BFF/Gr1-2 /Week 2 3 Saddleback Church 2009

Do: Have each student write down who they will be kind to and how they will do it! LIVE OUT LOUD: Read the following key Live It questions aloud and see if any of the children know the answer. If they are stumped on an answer, encourage the leaders to help the kids out. 1) Why did the Religious Leaders not want Jesus to be kind to the crippled man? 2) What did Jesus do in this story? 3) Why should I be kind to others?
