Advent Sermon Series Jesus Moves Into the Neighborhood Week 1 How to Know the Jesus of Christmas Introduction The Word Became Flesh 1 In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. 2 He was in the beginning with God. 3 All things were made through him, and without him was not any thing made that was made. 4 In him was life, and the life was the light of men. 5 The light shines in the darkness, and the darkness has not overcome it. 6 There was a man sent from God, whose name was John. 7 He came as a witness, to bear witness about the light, that all might believe through him. 8 He was not the light, but came to bear witness about the light. 9 The true light, which gives light to everyone, was coming into the world. 10 He was in the world, and the world was made through him, yet the world did not know him. 11 He came to his own, and his own people did not receive him. 12 But to all who did receive him, who believed in his name, he gave the right to become children of God, 13 who were born, not of blood nor of the will of the flesh nor of the will of man, but of God. 14 And the Word became flesh and dwelt among us, and we have seen his glory, glory as of the only Son from the Father, full of grace and truth. I hope you all had a good Thanksgiving. Can you believe that next Sunday we begin Advent. I have a secret that I want to tell you but don t tell anyone else. This year the church is taking its cue from Walmart. We re getting a jump on the Christmas season. This week we are starting a 5 week Advent Sermon Series before the start of Advent. Our women are having an Advent brunch before the start of Advent. Just keep it a secret why we re doing this.

Also I am really grateful that Jim prepared the way for me by preaching on How to Listen to a Sermon with Falling Asleep. So no excuses out there! Christmas invokes a lot of deep emotions in us. I grew up in a loving home but it was Christ-less. For 21 years I celebrated Christ-less christmas s Christ s name was attached to the event but He never played a role. We had a manger scene I knew the Christmas story kind of. But we weren t Christians celebrating Christmas. We were Ian s celebrating Mus [That s Christians and Christmas without Christ]. And I certainly had no idea that Jesus was God come to earth. Mostly as a kid, Christmas was about presents. 35 years ago this week all that changed for me. Jesus grabbed hold of me and I have never been the same since. Thank God for that! But 35 years ago this week I experienced the second birth. I knew Jesus as my Lord and My God. That first Christmas was extraordinary. I remember being so excited about the words of the Christmas carols which I had been singing for years. Born to raise the sons of earth Born to give us second birth I had never heard of the second birth before except that I had been singing it for years. Risen with healing in his wings Here again was something I had just begun to experience the healing power of Jesus. I never heard anyone talk about this before that Jesus heals except that I had been singing it for years. Veiled in flesh, the Godhead see Hail the incarnate deity Early on in my Christian walk I had no clue what incarnate meant. (It simply means in the body so when we talk about The incarnation we talk about God coming in a body in skin and bones God becoming man). So in this carol we were singing about the deity of Christ. The fact that Jesus was God was completely new to me except that I had been singing it for years. Well, this excitement and newness of Christmas carried me for a few years. But gradually the world s spirit of Christmas began to take over. I knew that I needed to put the wonder of the incarnation [God in the flesh] into the celebration but I didn t know how. The ceaseless carpet-bombing commercialism is enough to drown out all sense of wonder and awe. I imagine that I am not alone here I expect that some of you struggle at Christmas. It might not be for the same reasons as mine it might be the busyness, the pressure, the January credit card bills, perhaps a Christmas past was a season of personal loss for you and the joy and wonder are gone. The next five weeks we are going to soak in one of the most wonderful Christmas passages in the Scriptures John 1:1-14. The series is called Jesus moves into the Neighborhood. I can guarantee you that if you let the nature, the breadth and the wonder of the incarnation saturate your thoughts this Christmas will be transformed. Today we will address the question: How can I know the Jesus of Christmas / How can I know that Jesus is really God? 2

Let s Pray How to Know the Jesus of Christmas The Scripture John 1:1-2 John 1:1-2 In the beginning was the Word and the Word was with God and the Word was God. He was in the beginning with God. This passage in John is incredible. Nowhere else in the scriptures do we have such a glimpse of the divinity of Jesus. A glimpse of the trinity. And all of this culminates in verse 14. And this Word became flesh and moved into the neighborhood (John 1:14 in the message) Jesus the one who came into Mary s womb as a single cell, as a baby in the manager, as a boy growing up in an obscure village to poor parents, in a third rate has-been occupied nation was God and is God. He was fully God and fully Man. Advent Monologue Why Jesus Isn t God Ian [pops out seat comes down the aisle]: Wait just minute. Before you spend another second brainwashing these nice people with this hog wash I would like just a few minutes of equal time to tell them why this whole idea of Jesus being God is completely absurd. Would you give me just a couple of minutes to give my 3 best reasons why Jesus could not have been God. Bob: Wait a minute - Who are you? Ian: Name s Ian I ve only been here a few weeks. Come on give me a chance. Bob: Well [looking to the audience] should we give him a chance? Okay. Ian: [Addresses the congregation] You know all of this stuff about Christmas and peace on earth and good will towards man is really good stuff. But let s dismiss once and for all - this notion that Jesus was God. Look I believe in God maker of heaven and earth - but it makes no sense for God to come to earth as a man as a baby to be in the womb as single cell. What s God going to do in there for nine months catch up on his sleep? Look the universe is billions and billions of miles wide and God made it all how could the infinite creator become finite? Let me show you how crazy this idea is [looks at Bob] this is still my first reason. Think about how you relate to slugs. Do you ever spend any time caring for them not to mention wanting to become one of them so that they could better themselves. And we are much more like slugs [Turns to other side] no offense mind you we are more like slugs than God is like us. There is no rational way that He could care so much for us to become one of us. Okay second reason. Look If I was God and went to all this trouble to become a man and come to earth I would certainly leave more evidence. What evidence is there that this happened? Oh a few hysterical women and distraught fisherman but really. If you were God, would you do it on such a small scale? Hey I would have done something so that each generation could see that I was here. 3

[Pauses and then has a great thought] You know what would have been really cool like if he left a gift for every generation that would show he was God that he knew what was coming before it happened. Like the gift for 1900 would be a RCA TV set and the gift for 1950 would be an Apple Ipod and the gift for 2000 would be MicroTools anti-gravity belt and.. Bob: Okay okay get to your last point. Ian: Remember when Ghandi said I like your Christ, I do not like your Christians If Jesus was God wouldn t his followers be nicer? [Turns to the other side] No offense mind you I am sure you are real nice people it s all the rest of those Christians. But the point is that Jesus was supposed to leave His spirit here well man I sure don t see it. Nietsche said the same thing "You Christians will have to sing better songs if I am to believe in your Savior. You will have to look more redeemed if I am to believe in your Redeemer." Actually you do sing some better songs but most of you don t look too redeemed. My fourth point is that Bob: Whoa! You said three points Ian: But this is my best Bob: [looking to the audience] Should we give him one more? Ian: This is really critical Jesus never said he was God Oh he hinted at it and implied it but show me one place where Jesus stands up and says Hey look! I am God. If God came to earth as a man wouldn t He want people to know? Duh? Anybody home? Isn t that the point of going to all this effort? One more point Bob: Come on Ian: No this is the clincher. Jesus was a liar and not all knowing. God knows everything and never lies. Jesus said He was coming back soon. That was 2000 years ago. You Christians say [sing song] But with God a day is like a thousand years so He s only been gone two days. Come on. Why tell his followers that He was coming back soon when He wasn t coming back for more than 2000 years? It s because he was wrong and God can t be wrong. [Pauses briefly and then like he has another idea] Oh yah here s another reason Bob: Ian - Thanks but we need to get back to the sermon. Ian: [ Sighs ] Protests Bob: No we really need to move on let s give Ian a hand and show him our appreciation. 4

The Failure of Reason How to Know the Jesus of Christmas If Ian was your friend, how would you answer his questions? How can we show some one that Jesus this man who lived 2000 years ago who was born in a stable and laid in a manager was crucified some 30 years later How can we show Ian that Jesus was God? It probably won t work to use the Bible with Ian you might as well quote the National Inquirer. If Ian is typical, there are no authorities that can be trusted. Madeleine L Engle has a great poem: This is the irrational season When love blooms bright and wild Had Mary been filled with reason There d be no room left for the child. How do we come to know the Jesus of Christmas? So are there answers to Ian s questions? Absolutely - there are some from history - some are from science and some are from the Bible but that s not where we re going this morning. Over the next three weeks will address each of them. The problem with trying to answer these questions with reason is, although it can prepare the way for belief, they can never convince anyone that Jesus was God in the flesh. We have to admit that God becoming a man is a completely irrational act for Jesus to be fully God and fully man is really absurd. Oh we can make up cute little analogies that can explain it after the fact but we have to admit that it doesn t make sense to reason.. So how do we come to know the Jesus of Christmas? Let s think a minute how the first people that came know the true Jesus of Christmas the Jesus who was the Word and was with God and was God. How did Mary come to know Jesus? through an angel How did Joseph come to know Jesus? through a dream from God How about the Shepherds? again an angel The Magi? they knew that Jesus was not just a man remember they came to Worship him 1 And Anna and Simeon in the Temple How did they know the Jesus of Christmas? Again through supernatural revelation. God revealed it in their heart. 1 Matthew 2:2 5

Are we seeing a pattern here? Perhaps God was trying to show us that all who would come to worship Jesus as God would come because of supernatural revelation. But it didn t end at Jesus birth. Even Peter, who lived with and walked with Jesus for three years did not reason his way to knowing Jesus. But it was revealed to him supernaturally by the Father. 2 The simple truth is - We can only know the Jesus of Christmas Jesus the Word who was with God in the Beginning / The Word who was God through Supernatural revelations. If you are one who is convinced that Jesus is God, think about in your own life how did it happened? What convinced you? If you reflect on it you ll see that it was because He revealed himself to you. Now supernatural revelation isn t limited to: Appearance of angels Dreams Guiding Stars Sometimes we cannot explain it just happens the Holy Spirit comes and supernaturally shows us Jesus. Remember Isaiah in the drama this morning I just know. Do you remember the story of C.S. Lewis conversion In Surprised By Joy he describes a ride in motorcycle sidecar going to a zoo. "When we set out I did not believe that Jesus is the Son of God, and when we reached the zoo I did." He wasn t thinking about the question. It just happened. One of the greatest minds of the 20 th century could not explain the transition he could explain the reasons to believe but for him the transition took place because the Father in heaven revealed to him the Jesus of Christmas. Let me just sidebar on this point a minute about the revelation and reason. I mentioned earlier that reason and rational argument can pave the way for belief open the door for God to reveal Jesus to us. Reason also can validate our faith after the fact. That s what Lewis spent his life doing breaking down barriers to faith for the non-christians and validating the faith of Christians. Supernatural revelation must be validated with fact or it is worthless. Christianity is a religion based on fact. The Angel revealed Jesus to Mary but she really had a baby The Angel appeared to the Shepherds but the found a baby just as revealed All true supernatural revelation must validated on facts. Why We Need the Light to Shine in the Darkness Why does it matter that we cannot reason our way to knowing Jesus? Why does it matter that the only way to know Jesus is by God supernaturally revealing Himself to us. 2 Matthew 16 6

It matters greatly. Integrating this truth into our life will affect the way we grow in our knowledge of Jesus and how we relate to others. Think about it if I really accept the fact that the only way to Jesus for me or for others - is for God to show up what would I do differently? As a minimum we would pray more and talk less. And our passage sheds some light on this The Light shines in the darkness And the darkness did not comprehend it. It s not even enough for the Light to shine in the darkness. God has to come and lift the shades the blinders we have. We cannot reason our way into believing that Jesus is God it comes when God comes and shines His Light into our darkness. What is our Responsibility? But how can we break out of that darkness if it depends upon God s supernatural intervention into our lives what do we do just sit around and wait for it to happen? Here is that great mystery the meshing of the sovereignty of God s action and the free will of our response. We are going to talk more about mystery in the weeks to come but look at verse 8 He [John] came as a witness to testify about the Light so that all might believe through him through John Do you remember what the Angel said to his father? And he will turn many of the sons of Israel back to the Lord their God. 3 Imagine if I played a role in you coming to Christ and I went around saying to your friends Nancy believes that Jesus was God through me! I turned Jon back to the Lord his God As a minimum you d probably not have me speaking today. 3 Luke 1:16 7

This is a mystery we know that, on our own, we cannot turn anyone back to God. Yet the Bible is 4 not afraid to talk about our roles in terms which seem to be exclusively God s role. So if we can only know the Jesus is God by God s Light shining into our life / by the Father revealing Jesus to us do we have a role to play ABSOLUTELY! But what is that role? Anyone remember what the angel told the shepherds after they announced the birth of Jesus? And the angel said unto them, Fear not: for, behold, I bring you good tidings of great joy, which shall be to all people. For unto you is born this day in the city of David a Savior, which is Christ the Lord. And this shall be a sign unto you; Ye shall find the babe wrapped in swaddling clothes, lying in a manger. 5 The angel told the shepherds to go find Jesus / They had to seek him. He didn t give them a street address. They had to find him. The same is true with us. We can only get to know the Jesus of Christmas through God s supernatural revelation but we are still called to seek Him and to encourage others to seek Him. We are all Seekers Some of us are absolutely convinced that Jesus is God the Word was with God and the Word was God. Jesus was fully man and fully God. Some of us are like Ian and are sure that He is not God. The rest of us are somewhere in between. But we are all called to seek him even when we are fully convinced. Knowing the Jesus of Christmas is not just a one time revelation. St. Paul came to know the Jesus of Christmas by a supernatural revelation. Jesus appeared to him on the road to Damascus. But many years later in one of his letters he cries out his hearts desire That I might know him. In a lot of our churches, if Paul stood up in our midst and said that a bunch of us would run over and offer to pray with him that he would receive Christ. We need to recognize that coming to know the Jesus of Christmas is an on going affair. And it comes not just with one revelation but with many. Every thing that we know about Jesus is going to come by supernatural revelation. We are all called to be seekers to be the shepherds and go find Jesus. You see we have this wrong view of faith. Faith is not a blind leap in the dark into the Light. It s not where we go from total unbelief to total belief. Faith is a series of steps into more and more light. It s a connecting of the dots of God s appearances / his intersections / his revelation his light / in our lives through Coincidences Nudges Circumstance Convictions Still small voice 4 Thanks to Mike Scudder for this insight 5 Luke 2:12-14 8

Other people Illumination of truth Scriptures How to Know the Jesus of Christmas In each of these (and many more) God is there revealing Himself to us and growing our faith. What does it look like to be a Seeker? How do we seek God? Well - what do you do if you are looking for something? Look for evidence Go to where it was last seen and ask others who have seen it Certainly the best place to go is the scriptures and to others who have found Him. Jesus said that all of scripture all of Old Testament scripture testifies about Him. A number of years ago at a Bible Conference here Don Mostrom encouraged us to invite Jesus to reveal himself every time we open the Bible. That s one way to look like a seeker. And I can say that it has worked over the years. What would this church look like if we all were a bunch of God seekers? All on a faith journey getting to know the Jesus of Christmas. How inviting would that be for those from the outside who come into our midst? Brian McLaren says: If we can present ourselves to our post-modern neighbors not as an exclusive inner circle of in the know finders but rather as seekers ourselves people on the path, folks who don t have all the answers but who feel they are genuinely onto something if we can do that, then the seekers around us will feel a kinship with us and many will join us on our path. 6 And let me tell you - we are genuinely on to something! The Advent Challenge This week I m inviting you on an Advent journey to become like the shepherds and wise men who have heard about Jesus coming but now are on a search for him. Each week up until Christmas, we are going to provide a sheet in the bulletin with that weeks scripture and some questions to reflect upon each day take some time to soak in the scriptures to reflect upon the questions And get to know the Jesus of Christmas. God s written word guarantees that if you Seek Him - you shall find Him Draw near to Him and He will draw near to you 6 The Church on the Other Side by Brian McLaren 9

So take the Advent challenge. I know that if you take the time, He will transform this Advent and make it like no other. 10
