Text: John 7:44-47 Sermon on Ask Jesus to Speak for your Breakthrough Rev. Kwabena D. Akufo 9/9/2007 44 Some wanted to seize him, but no one laid a hand on him. 45 Finally the temple guards went back to the chief priests and Pharisees, who asked them, "Why didn't you bring him in?" 46 "No one ever spoke the way this man does," the guards declared. 47 "You mean he has deceived you also?" the Pharisees retorted. 1 Introduction 1.1 My secondary school headmaster s captivating speech always calmed any student unrest When I was a student at Tema Secondary School, F.K. Buah was the headmaster. He was a learned man and a noble looking man. He commanded respect and awe from the teachers and students and was well liked. This was during the nineteen-sixties when secondary school students had a habit of going on strike for petty reasons and destroying school property. But because of the way he managed the school there was no real cause for student unrest. Yet some students, being copycats, wanted to stage a strike. So, one day they instigated a strike over the quality of bread served in the dining hall and caused students to refuse to go to class. When F.K. Buah heard about it, he convened a general school assembly. During the assembly he spoke about the reasons for the strike and told them if they did not like the particular bread he will change it immediately. His speech was gentle yet captivating. Everyone was convinced that the strike was not necessary and school resumed. During his tenure as headmaster there was never a strike at Tema Secondary School. How was F.K. Buah able to accomplish a strike-free tenure where headmasters of other secondary schools failed? As the founding headmaster of the school F.K. Buah had unusual command and control of the school and the students. In addition to command and control, he had an unusual ability to speak to captivate the students. 1.2 Jesus captivating speech also calms spiritual unrest Our passage teaches us about the uniqueness of Jesus speech that captivates men, disarms the enemy, arrests the enemy, and changes situations. The episode in our passage takes Kwabena Akufo 1

place at the Tabernacles Festival during which Jesus challenged the participants to come to him for Living Water. The Jewish leaders had conspired to kill Jesus and so they sent a detachment of police to arrest him. After listening to Jesus the police could not arrest him and reported to the Jewish Leaders that No one ever spoke the way this man does. They are right. Jesus speech is unique, power-filled, and able to transform situations. Because of that if Jesus speaks into any situation the situation will not remain the same. If you want to change your situation you must ask Jesus to speak into your situation. Ask Jesus to speak for your breakthrough. Call on Jesus to speak to liberate you. Call on Jesus to speak to free you from your bondage. Call on Jesus to speak to release your burdens. 2 The Police were arrested by Jesus speech 2.1 The police were commissioned to arrest Jesus The temple guards constituted the police force of the Jewish authorities. They were given an arrest warrant by the Jewish rulers. As people hired by the rulers they were bound and required to obey the rulers. As people working for the rulers they were expected to be loyal to the objectives of the rulers. They were not to question the order issued by the rulers but must swiftly obey the order. It is in this frame of mind that the police went into the crowds to arrest Jesus. It was the last day of the festival and it was probably getting to the end of the day s festivities. The Jewish rulers figured that it was the best time to arrest him. They didn t have to search for him and most people were getting ready to leave and so there will not be a lingering commotion by his supporters. 2.2 Jesus speech subdued the police The police arrived on the scene and waited for a good opportunity to arrest Jesus. While they were waiting they began to listen to Jesus teaching. As Jesus himself has said in John 6:63, The words I have spoken to you are spirit and they are life. As Jesus speech infused with the Spirit of God started entering them they began to be drawn into his speech. It was as if a net had been thrown around the police and Jesus was drawing them in like a fisherman draws fish. Jesus speech cast a spiritual spell upon them and started disarming them. It disarmed them of their loyalty to the Jewish rulers, it disarmed them of their plan to arrest him, it disarmed them of Kwabena Akufo 2

their mission to harm him, it disarmed them of their methods for subduing him, it disarmed them of their weapons of arrest. 2.3 Jesus speech made the police his advocates Then Jesus speech began to affect their minds, it pricked their consciences, it moved their hearts, it stirred their souls. They could not stand it anymore and so they proclaimed no one ever spoke the way this man does. The police had now become confessors of Jesus. They had become his evangelists. They had become his proponents. Those who had come to arrest Jesus had been arrested by Jesus. The speech of Jesus had arrested the enemy. The speech of Jesus had disabled the enemy. The speech of Jesus had disarmed the enemy. So, you must ask Jesus to speak for your breakthrough. Ask Jesus to speak to deliver you from your bondaged situation. Ask Jesus to speak to lift your burdens. Ask Jesus to speak to arrest your enemies. 3 God spoke into David s situation and gave him his breakthrough David found himself in a similar situation to Jesus when Saul was looking to kill him. As he was being pursued by Saul, David went to see Samuel at Naioth in Ramah. And though the Bible does not tell us, I believe David prayed to God and asked him to speak for his breakthrough. You see David had done nothing against Saul and yet Saul was bent on killing him. Some of you are facing situations like this. When you try to do good to your family they turn around and persecute you. People with evil intentions surround you. The enemy has put his foot in your situation and continually messes your life. The time has come for you to ask the Lord to speak into your situation. Ask God to speak for your deliverance. Ask God to speak for your breakthrough. Ask God to speak for your peace of mind. Ask God to speak for your victory. Saul heard that David was at Naioth in Ramah so he sent his soldiers to arrest him. When they arrived God spoke into the situation and the Spirit of God arrested them, disarmed them, disabled them and caused them to incessantly prophesy. Then Saul sent another group of soldiers and the same thing happened to them. He sent a third group of soldiers and they suffered the same fate. Finally, he went himself. As he got closer to Naioth, the Spirit of God came even upon him, and he walked along prophesying until he came to Naioth. He stripped off Kwabena Akufo 3

his robes and also prophesied in Samuel's presence. He lay that way all that day and night. (1 Samuel 19:23-24) I don t know what situation you are in. Are you being pursued by the enemy? Do you feel like the devil is blocking your breakthrough? Ask Jesus to speak into your situation. When Jesus speaks into your situation the Holy Spirit will overshadow your enemies, the Holy Spirit will constrain your enemies, the Holy Spirit strip them of their clothes, the Holy Spirit will pin them down to the ground, the Holy Spirit will conquer them for you. So, ask Jesus to speak for your breakthrough. Call on Jesus to speak to liberate you. Call on Jesus to speak to free you from your bondage. Call on Jesus to speak to release your burdens. Ask him to speak to free you from your enemies. Ask him to speak to disarm your enemies. Ask him to speak to arrest your enemies. situations. But you may ask why is it that Jesus speech is unique and is empowered to overcome all 4 Jesus speech is an order from the creator to the created It is because Jesus speech is the speech of the creator God! When the soldiers said, no one ever spoke the way this man does, they were declaring that this is not the speech of man. This is supernatural speech. This is the speech of the creator himself, God-incarnate; the Son of God-the source of creation, speaking the Word of God-the agency of creation, filled with the Spirit of God-the medium of creation. Jesus, therefore, has command and control over all created elements. They cannot but obey when he orders them. That is why the disciples said in Matthew 8:27, What kind of man is this? Even the winds and the waves obey him! When Jesus spoke the winds and the waves calmed down. When Jesus spoke the soldiers who came to arrest him in the olive grove fell to the ground. When Jesus spoke the legion of demons fled from the Gerasenes tomb madman. When Jesus spoke the centurion s servant was healed. When Jesus spoke the royal official s son was healed. When Jesus spoke the cripple at Bethesda pool walked. When Jesus spoke Lazarus rose from the dead. Kwabena Akufo 4

When Jesus spoke the Samaritan woman was released from a life of adultery. When Jesus spoke the Syrophoenician woman gained her breakthrough. When Jesus speaks any situation that can be given a name must obey. So, ask Jesus to speak for your breakthrough. Call on Jesus to speak to liberate you. Call on Jesus to speak to free you from your bondage. Call on Jesus to speak to release your burdens. Just ask Jesus to speak today. 5 Conclusion On the last and greatest day of the Festival of Tabernacles, the Jewish Rulers sent their police arrest Jesus. When they arrived and heard Jesus speak they were captivated by his speech and proclaimed no one ever spoke like this man. The police who normally obeyed their boss s orders and executed the objectives of their boss were subdued by Jesus speech. They then became his advocates as they refused to arrest him and defended him to their bosses. When David faced a similar situation with Saul looking to kill him God spoke into David s situation and the Holy Spirit arrested Saul s soldiers and Saul himself. When Jesus speaks, his speech is an order from the creator to the created and hence all created elements cannot but obey his order. That is why you must ask Jesus to speak into your situation for he uniquely has command and control over your situation. For no one ever spoke like this man and no one will ever speak like him because he is the creator God, the omnipotent God, the omniscient God, the everlasting God, the King of kings, and the Lord of lords. Ask Jesus to speak for your breakthrough. Kwabena Akufo 5
