Once in Royal David s City Once in royal David's city, Stood a lowly cattle shed, Where a mother laid her baby in a manger for His bed: Mary was that mother mild, Jesus Christ her little child. He came down to earth from heaven, Who is God and Lord of all, And His shelter was a stable, And His cradle was a stall; With the poor and mean and lowly, Lived on earth our Saviour holy. And through all His wondrous childhood, He would honour and obey, Love and watch the lowly maiden, In whose gentle arms He lay. Christian children all must be, Mild, obedient, good as He. For He is our childhood's pattern, Day by day like us He grew, He was little, weak, and helpless, Tears and smiles like us He knew, And He feeleth for our sadness, And He shareth in our gladness. And our eyes at last shall see Him, Through His own redeeming love; For that child so dear and gentle, Is our Lord in heaven above, And He leads His children on, To the place where He is gone. Not in that poor lowly stable, With the oxen standing by, We shall see Him, but in heaven, Set at God's right hand on high; When like stars His children crowned, All in white shall be around. 9 But when they had enter d the city so fair A number of people so mighty was there That Joseph and Mary, whose substance was small Could find in the inn there no lodging at all. Then they were constrain d in a stable to lie Where horses and asses they us d for to tie; Their lodging so simple they took it no scorn, But against the next morning our Saviour was born. The King of all kings to this world being brought, Small store of fine linen to wrap him was sought; And when she has swaddled her young son so sweet, Within an ox-manger she laid him to sleep. Then God sent an angel from heaven so high, To certain poor shepherds in fields where they lie, And bade them no long in sorrow to stay, Because that our Saviour was born on this day. Then presently after the shepherds did spy A number of angles that stood in the sky; They joyfully talked and sweetly did sing, To God be all glory our heavenly King. 2

Coventry Carol [Refrain ] Lully, lulla, thou little tiny child; By by, lully, lullay O sisters too, How may we do For to preserve this day This poor youngling, For whom we do sing By by, lully, lullay Herod, the King, In his raging Charged he hath this day His men of might, In his own sight By by, lully, lullay That woe is me, Poor child for thee! And ever morn and day For thy parting, Neither say nor sing By by, lully, lullay [Repeat refrain] Gaudete! Gaudete! Gaudete! Christus est natus Ex Maria Virgine : Gaudete (refrain) Verses sung by soloist or tenors 1. Ergo nostra concio psallat jam in lustro Benedicat domino salus regi nostro On Christmas Night All Christians Sing On Christmas night all Christians sing, To hear the news the angels bring; [repeat]: News of great joy, news of great mirth, News of our merciful King s birth. Then why should men on earth be so sad, Since our Redeemer made us glad: Then why should we on earth be sad, Since our Redeemer made us glad: When from our sin He set us free, All for to gain our liberty. When sin departs before Your grace, Then life and health come in its place; When sin departs before Your grace, Then life and health come in its place; Angels and men with joy may sing, All for to see the newborn King. All out of darkness we have light Which made the angels sing this night; All out of darkness we have light Which made the angels sing this night: Glory to God and peace to men, Now and forevermore. Amen. 3 8

O come all ye Faithful O come, all ye faithful, joyful and triumphant, Come ye, O come ye, to Bethlehem. Come and behold Him, born the King of angels; O come, let us adore Him,O come, let us adore Him, O come, let us adore Him,Christ the Lord. [refrain] God of God, Light of light Lo he abhors not the Virgin s womb Very God, begotten, not created [refrain] See how the shepherds, summoned to His cradle, Leaving their flocks, draw nigh with lowly fear; We too will thither bend our joyful footsteps; [refrain] Lo! Star-led chieftains, Magi, Christ adoring Offer him incense, gold and myrrh; We to the Christ Child Bring our hearts oblations [refrain] Child, for us sinners poor and in the manger, We would embrace Thee, with love and awe; Who would not love Thee, loving us so dearly? [refrain] Sing, choirs of angels, sing in exultation; Sing, all ye citizens of heaven above! Glory in the highest; [refrain] or descant Oh come, oh come, let us adore him Christ the Lord Deck the Hall Deck the hall with boughs of holly Fa la la la la la, la la la la 'Tis the season to be jolly Fa la la la la la, la la la la Fill the mead cup, drain the barrel Fa la la, la la la, la la la Troll the ancient Christmas carol Fa la la la la la, la la la la See the flowing bowl before us Fa la la la la la, la la la la Strike the harp and join the chorus Fa la la la la la, la la la la Follow me in merry measure Fa la la, la la la, la la la While I sing of beauty s treasure Fa la la la la la, la la la la Fast away the old year passes Fa la la la la la, la la la la Hail the new, ye lads and lasses Fa la la, la la la, la la la Laughing, quaffing, all together Fa la la la la la, la la la la Heedless of the wind and weather Fa la la la la la, la la la la Ding Dong! Hark the Herald Angels Sing Hark! the herald angels sing, "Glory to the new born King Peace on earth and mercy mild, God and sinners reconciled!" Joyful, all ye nations rise; Join the triumph of the skies; With angelic host proclaim "Christ is born in Bethlehem!" [Refrain] Hark! the herald angels sing "Glory to the newborn King!" Christ, by highest heaven adored; Christ the everlasting Lord; Late in time behold Him come, Offspring of the virgin s womb. Veiled in flesh, the Godhead see; Hail the incarnate Deity Pleased as man with men to dwell, Jesus, our Emmanuel [Refrain] Hail! the heaven-born Prince of Peace! Hail! the Son of Righteousness! Light and life to all He brings, Risen with healing in His wings. Mild He lays His glory by, Born that man no more may die; Born to raise the sons of earth, Born to give them second birth [Refrain] In the Bleak Mid-winter In the bleak midwinter frosty wind made moan Earth stood hard as iron, water like a stone Snow had fallen, snow on snow, snow on snow In the bleak midwinter, long ago [ Our god, Heaven cannot hold him nor earth sustain Heaven and Earth shall flee away when he comes to reign In the bleak midwinter, a stable place sufficed The lord God almighty Jesus Christ Enough for him, whom cherubim worship night and day A breastful of milk, and a manger full of hay; Enough for him, whom angels fall down before The ox and ass and camel which adore Angels and archangels may have gathered there Cherubim and seraphim thronged the air But only by his mother in her maiden bliss Worshiped the beloved with a kiss What can I give him poor as I am? If I were a shepherd I would bring a lamb If I were a wise man I would do my part Yet what I can I give him give my heart 5 6

While Shepherd s Watched their Flocks While shepherds watched their flocks by night, All seated on the ground, The angel of the Lord came down, And glory shone around. "Fear not," said he, for mighty dread Had seized their troubled mind, "Glad tidings of great joy I bring To you and all mankind.": : pherds_watched_their_flocks.html ] "To you, in David's town this day, Is born of David's line The Saviour who is Christ the Lord, And this shall be the sign: La La Choirs The heavenly Babe you there shall find To human view displayed, All meanly wrapped in swathing bands, And in a manger laid." Christmas Carols Thus spake the seraph, and forthwith Appeared a shining throng Of angels praising God and thus Addressed their joyful song: "All glory be to God on high And on the earth be peace, Goodwill henceforth from heaven to men Begin and never cease." 11

Away in a Manger Away in a Manger, no crib for a bed The little Lord Jesus laid down his sweet head The stars in the bright sky look down where he lay The little Lord Jesus asleep in the hay. The cattle are lowing, the baby awakes But little Lord Jesus no crying he makes I love thee Lord Jesus look down from the sky And stay by my side until morning is nigh. Be near me Lord Jesus, I ask thee to stay Close by me for ever and love me, I pray Bless all the dear children in thy tender care And fit us for heaven, to live with thee there. A Virgin most Pure A virgin most pure, as the prophets do tell Hath brought forth a baby, as it hath befell; To be our Redeemer from death, hell and sin Which Adam s transgression had wrapped us in. Silent Night Silent night, holy night All is calm, all is bright See the gentle Mother and child Holy Infant so tender and mild Rest in heavenly peace Rest in heavenly peace Silent night, holy night! Guiding star, lend they light See the Eastern wise men bring Gifts and homage to our King Jesus Christ is born, Jesus Christ is born. Silent night, holy night Wondrous star, lend they light With the angels let us sing, Alleluia to our King Jesus Christ is here, Jesus Christ is here. (Last verse sung by tenor/bass) Silent night, holy night, Shepherds first saw the sight Heard the angel-song, al-le-lu-ia Loud proclaiming near and far, Christ our saviour is here, Christ our saviour is here Aye, and therefore be merry; Rejoice and be you merry; Set sorrow aside, Christ Jesus our Saviour was born at this tide. [chorus] In Bethlehem Jewry a city there was Where Joseph and Mary together did pass, An there to be taxed with many one mo, For Caesar commanded the same should be so. 1 10
