Recitations Deuteronomy: The Second Law

Why learn recitations? 1. And these words which I command you today shall be in your heart; you shall teach them diligently to your children. (Deut. 6:6-7) 2. In the New Testament, the Lord sets an example for us by often quoting Scripture. 3. By knowing actual statements from the Word, a person is equipped to fight when in temptation, as the Lord did in the wilderness. 4. Knowing scriptural passages is necessary to confirm and uphold the doctrine of genuine truth. 5. Having passages of Scripture in one s mind provides vessels in which to receive influx from the Lord and be conjoined with Him, for He is the Word made flesh. 6. During the process of learning and reciting passages from the Word, there is a direct association with angels. We have the opportunity to feel their delight, thus developing our affection for the Word. 7. The Word is the only way to learn about the Lord God, life after death, heaven and hell, and how to live and believe in order to be happy forever. Translation In Old Testament passages that are very familiar, we have used LORD with small capitals in place of Jehovah. Though the Heavenly Doctrine always uses Jehovah for this name, it also says that Jehovah is the Lord Himself (AC 14, TCR 82-83). In modern English, we do not have a way to distinguish you singular from you plural ( you all ). The Writings say that the singular means love, affection and good, while the plural means wisdom, thoughts and truths. To note this difference, which is clear in the Hebrew and Greek, we use thee, thou, thy when it is singular. Words in small italics are not found in the Hebrew or Greek. They are added to make the English easier to read.

1. Tuesday, Sept. 5 Monday, Sept. 18 Hear, O Israel: Jehovah is our God; Jehovah is one. And thou shalt love Jehovah thy God with all thy heart, and with all thy soul, and with all thy powers. And these words, which I command thee this day, shall be upon thy heart, and thou shalt teach them diligently to thy sons, and shalt speak of them when thou sittest in thy house, and when thou walkest by the way, and when thou liest down, and when thou risest up. And thou shalt bind them for a sign upon thy hand, and they shall be as frontlets between thine eyes. And thou shalt write them on the doorposts of thy house, and on thy gates. Deuteronomy 6:4-9 2. Tuesday, Sept. 19 Monday, Oct. 2 And He humbled thee, and made thee hunger, and fed thee manna, which thou didst not know, neither did thy fathers know, so that He might make thee know that man does not live by bread alone, but by every word that proceeds out of the mouth of the LORD man shall live. Deuteronomy 8:3

3. Tuesday, Oct. 3 Monday, Oct. 16 The LORD is my shepherd; I shall not be in want. He makes me to lie down in green pastures; He guides me beside the still waters. He restores my soul; He leads me in the paths of justice For His name s sake. Psalm 23:1-3 4. Tuesday, Oct. 17 Monday, Oct. 30 Yea, though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil, for Thou art with me; Thy rod and thy staff, they comfort me. Thou preparest a table before me in the presence of mine enemies; Thou anointest my head with oil; My cup runs over. Surely goodness and mercy shall follow me All the days of my life, And I will dwell in the house of the LORD for length of days. Psalm 23:4-6

5. Tuesday, Oct. 31 Monday, Nov. 13 Minister: And Jesus said to him, Thou shalt love the Lord thy God with thy whole heart, and with thy whole soul, and with thy whole mind. This is the first and great commandment. And the second is like it: Thou shalt love thy neighbor as thyself. On these two commandments hang the whole Law and the Prophets. Matthew 22:37-40 6. Tuesday, Nov. 14 Monday, Nov. 27 Know that the LORD, He is God. He has made us and not we ourselves; We are His people and the flock of His pasture. Come into His gates with thanksgiving, Into His courts with praise. Give thanks to Him; bless His name. For the LORD is good; His mercy is forever, And His truthfulness to generation and generation. Psalm 100:3-5

7. 8. Thursday, Dec. 7 Friday, Dec. 15 Then Herod, privately calling the Magi, precisely inquired of them at what time the star appeared. And sending them to Bethlehem, he said, Go and search earnestly for the little Child; and when you have found Him, report to me, so that I also may come and worship Him. And when they had heard the king, they went out; and behold, the star, which they saw in the east, went before them, till it came and stood over where the little Child was. And having seen the star, they rejoiced with exceedingly great joy. And coming into the house, they found the little Child with Mary His mother, and falling down, they worshiped Him; and opening their treasures, they offered to Him gifts: gold, and frankincense, and myrrh. And being warned in a dream not to return to Herod, they departed into their own country by another way. Matthew 2:7-12 9. Tuesday, Jan. 2 Tuesday, Jan. 16 I am the Resurrection and the Life; he who believes in Me, though he may die, he shall live. And everyone who lives and believes in Me shall never die. John 11:25-26

10. Wednesday, Jan. 17 Monday, Jan. 29 Not everyone who says to Me, Lord, Lord, shall enter into the kingdom of the heavens, but he who does the will of My Father who is in the heavens. Matthew 7:21 11. Tuesday, Jan. 30 Monday, Feb. 12 For this commandment which I command thee today is not too wonderful for thee, neither is it far off. It is not in the skies, to say, Who shall go up for us to the skies and fetch it for us, that we may hear it and do it? Neither is it across the sea, to say, Who shall cross the sea for us and fetch it for us, that we may hear it and do it? But the Word is very near to thee, in thy mouth and in thy heart, that thou mayest do it. Deuteronomy 30:11-14 12. Tuesday, Feb. 13 Friday, Feb. 23 This is My commandment, that you love one another, as I have loved you. Greater love has no one than this, that he lay down his soul for his friends. You are My friends, if you do whatever I command you. I no longer call you servants, for the servant does not know what his lord does; but I have called you friends, because all things which I have heard from My Father I have made known to you. John 15:12-15

13. Monday, Feb. 26 Friday, March 2 They who wait for the LORD shall renew their strength; They shall mount up with wings as eagles; They shall run, and not be tired; They shall walk, and not faint. Isaiah 40:31 14. Monday, March 12 Monday, March 26 Everyone who comes to Me and hears My words and does them, I will show you whom he is like: He is like a man building a house, who dug and went deep and laid a foundation on the rock. And there was a flood; the river burst against that house, and it did not have the strength to shake it, for it was founded on the rock. But he who hears and does not do them is like a man who built a house on the earth without a foundation, against which the river burst, and straightway it fell; and the ruin of that house was great. Luke 6:47-49 15. Tuesday, March 27 Monday, April 9 And as they went to report to His disciples, behold, Jesus met them, saying, Hail! And they, coming, took hold of His feet, and worshiped Him. Then Jesus says to them, Do not be afraid. Go report to My brothers that they should go into Galilee; there they shall see Me. Matthew 28:9-10

17. Tuesday, April 17 Monday, April 30 Seek ye first the kingdom of God, and His justice, and all these things shall be added to you. Do not be anxious, then, for the morrow; for the morrow shall be anxious for the things of itself. Sufficient for the day is the evil thereof. Matthew 6:33-34 18. Tuesday, May 1 Monday, May 14 Obey My voice, and I will be your God, and you shall be My people; and walk in all the way that I have commanded you, that it may be well for you. Jeremiah 7:23 19. Tuesday, May 15 Tuesday, May 29 And a great sign was seen in heaven: a woman arrayed with the sun, and the moon underneath her feet, and on her head a crown of twelve stars. And being with child, she cried, travailing, and pained to bring forth. And she brought forth a son, a male, who was to shepherd all nations with an iron staff; and her offspring was caught up to God and His throne. Revelation 12:1, 2, 5 20. Wednesday, May 30 Friday, June 8 Behold, I stand at the door and knock. If anyone hears My voice and opens the door, I will come in to him, and have supper with him, and he with Me. Revelation 3:20
