WEDNESDAY 13 DECEMBER 7PM STAGE 88, COMMONWEALTH PARK FREE EVENT! CHARITY

Canberra s 73rd Carols by Candlelight 13 December 2017 Welcome to Carols by Candlelight 2017. The first Canberra Carols by Candlelight concert was held in front of Old Parliament House on Christmas Eve 1945 and continued there until the completion of Stage 88 in Commonwealth Park in 1988. Woden Valley Youth Choir was first involved in leading the singing at Carols by Candlelight in the early 1970s and took over the organisation of the Carols in 1996. Now in its 73rd year, around 10,000 people enjoy the event each Christmas, and funds raised each year go to a local charity. This year the charity is Parkinson s ACT. Due to the generosity of many sponsors and the support of many members of Woden Valley Youth Choir and the wider community, all the expenses of running the evening are covered. This means, donations collected throughout the evening, a percentage of takings from food and drink vendors, as well as proceeds from the sale of candles and carol sheets will all go to Parkinson s ACT. Canberra Times 17 December 1945 Woden Valley Youth Choir Woden Valley Youth Choir was founded in 1969 by Don Whitbread, who, with his wife Barbara accompanying, grew the choir from a small group meeting in his lounge room to a choir of 50. The choir has sung for royalty and prime ministers, at opening and closing ceremonies for international sporting events and performed with the Australian Opera. Barbara Whitbread s father, Ed Gumley was a soloist at the inaugural Canberra Carols by Candlelight, so Woden Valley Youth Choir s connection goes right back to the start. In 1997, Don retired and handed the baton for the choir and Carols by Candlelight to Alpha Gregory. After 20 years at the helm, Alpha retired at the end of 2016 and this year for the first time, Artistic Director Kimberley Steele conducts Woden Valley Youth Choir as they present Carols by Candlelight 2017. Woden Valley Youth Choir thanks Canberra Weekly for producing this carol sheet, and our generous partners for their contributions to Carols by Candlelight 2017. We now invite you to enjoy the carols performed by Woden Valley Youth Choir, Canberra City Band and guest artists. From all of us at Carols by Candlelight, we wish everyone a Merry Christmas.

Christmas Shopping Blues BY RUTH MORRIS GRAY SUNG BY WODEN VALLEY YOUTH CHOIR Audience 3. Rudolph, the Red-nosed Reindeer Rudolph, the red-nosed reindeer had a very shiny nose, And if you ever saw it, you would even say it glows. All of the other reindeer used to laugh and call him names, They never let poor Rudolph join in any reindeer games. Then one foggy Christmas Eve, Santa came to say: Rudolph with your nose so bright Won t you guide my sleigh tonight? Then how the reindeer loved him as they shouted out with glee, Rudolph, the red-nosed reindeer, you ll go down in history!

The first Noel the angel did say Was to certain poor shepherds in fields as they lay: In fields where they lay keeping their sheep On a cold winter s night that was so deep. Noel, Noel, Noel, Noel, born is the King of Israel. 2. They looked up and saw a star, Shining in the east, beyond them far: And to the earth it gave great light, And so it continued both day and night. Noel, Noel, Noel, Noel, born is the King of Israel. 3. This star drew nigh to the north-west; O er Bethlehem it took its rest And there it did both stop and stay Right over the place where Jesus lay. Noel, Noel, Noel, Noel, born is the King of Israel.

Audience 7. Hark! The Herald Angels Sing Hark! The herald angels sing Glory to the newborn King; Peace on earth, and mercy mild, God and sinners reconciled! Joyful, all ye nations, rise, Join the triumph of the skies, With th angelic host proclaim, Christ is born in Bethlehem. Hark! The herald angels sing Glory to the newborn King. Hail the heaven born Prince of peace! Hail the son of righteousness! Light and life to all he brings, Ris n with healing in his wings; Mild he lays his glory by, Born that man no more may die, Born to raise the sons of earth, Born to give them second birth. Hark! The herald angels sing Glory to the newborn King. Audience 8. O Little Town of Bethlehem O little town of Bethlehem! How still we see thee lie; Above thy deep and dreamless sleep the silent stars go by. Yet in thy dark streets shineth the everlasting light; The hopes and fears of all the years Aae met in thee tonight. O holy Child of Bethlehem! Descend to us, we pray; Cast out our sin, and enter in, be born in us today. We hear the Christmas angels the great glad tidings tell, O come to us, abide with us; our Lord Emmanuel. Audience 9. Once In Royal David s City 1. Once in royal David s city stood a lowly cattle shed, Where a mother laid her baby in a manger for his bed: Mary was that mother mild, Jesus Christ her little child. 2. He came down to earth from heaven Who is God and Lord of all, And his shelter was a stable, and his cradle was a stall; With the poor and mean and lowly Lived on earth our Saviour holy. 3. Not in that poor lowly stable, with the oxen standing by, We shall see him; but in heaven, set at God s right hand on high; Where like stars his children crowned All in white shall wait around. Audience 10. Away in a Manger 1. Away in a manger; no crib for a bed, The little Lord Jesus laid down his sweet head. The stars in the bright sky looked down where he lay, The little Lord Jesus asleep on the hay. 2. The cattle are lowing, the baby awakes, But little Lord Jesus no crying he makes. I love thee, Lord Jesus! Look down from the sky, And stay by my side until morning is nigh. 3. Be near me, Lord Jesus; I ask thee to stay Close by me for ever; and love me, I pray. Bless all the dear children in thy tender care, And fit us for heaven, to live with thee there.

Shepherd s Pipe Carol BY JOHN RUTTER / SUNG BY WODEN VALLEY YOUTH CHOIR Audience 11. Angels, From the Realms of Glory 1. Angels, from the realms of glory, Wing your flight o er all the earth; Ye who sang creation s story now proclaim Messiah s Birth: Glo...ria in excelsis Deo, Glo...ria in excelsis Deo. 2. Shepherds in the field abiding, Watching o er your flocks by night, God with man is now residing; yonder shines the Infant light: Glo...ria in excelsis Deo, Glo...ria in excelsis Deo. 3. Sages, leave your contemplations; Brighter visions beam afar; Seek the great desire of nations; ye have seen his Natal star: Glo...ria in excelsis Deo, Glo...ria in excelsis Deo. Audience 13. O Come All Ye Faithful 1. O come, all ye faithful, joyful and triumphant, O come ye, O come ye to Bethlehem; Come and behold him born the King of Angels: O come, let us adore him, O come, let us adore him, O come, let us adore him, Christ the Lord! 2. Sing, choirs of angels, sing in exultation, Sing, all ye citizens of heav n above; Glory to God in the highest: O come, let us adore him, O come, let us adore him, O come, let us adore him, Christ the Lord! 3. Yea, Lord, we greet thee, born this happy morning, Jesus, to thee be glory giv n; Word of the Father; now in flesh appearing. O come, let us adore him, O come, let us adore him, O come, let us adore him, Christ the Lord! Audience 12. We Three Kings of Orient Are 1. We three kings of Orient are; Bearing gifts we travel afar, Field and fountain, moor and mountain, Following yonder star. : O star of wonder, star of night Star with royal beauty bright, Westward leading, still proceeding, Guide us to thy perfect light. 2. (Melchior) Born a King on Bethlehem plain, Gold I bring to crown him again, King for ever, ceasing never Over us all to reign. 3. (Caspar) Frankincense to offer have I, Incense owns a Deity nigh. Prayer and praising, all men raising, Worship him, God most high. 4. (Balthazar) Myrrh is mine, its bitter perfume Breathes a life of gathering gloom; Sorr wing, sighing, bleeding, dying, Sealed in a stone-cold tomb. 5. Glorious now behold him arise, King and God and sacrifice, Alleluia, alleluia, Earth to heav n replies.

Audience 14. The Three Drovers 1. Across the plains one Christmas night, Three drovers riding blithe and gay, Looked up and saw a starry light, More radiant than the Milky Way; And on their hearts such wonder fell, They sang with joy Noel! Noel! Noel! Noel! Noel! 2. The air was dry with summer heat, And smoke was on the yellow moon; But from the heavens, faint and sweet, Came floating down a wond rous tune; And, as they heard, they sang full well, Those drovers three - Noel! Noel! Noel! Noel! Noel! 3. The black swans flew across the sky, The wild dog called across the plain, The starry lustre blazed on high, Still echoed on the heavenly strain; And still they sang Noel! Noel! Those drovers three. Noel! Noel! Noel! Noel! Noel! Audience 15. Christmas Day 1. The north wind is tossing the leaves, The red dust is over the town; The sparrows are under the eaves And the grass in the paddock is brown; As we lift up our voices and sing To the Christ Child the Heavenly King. 2. The tree-ferns in green gullies sway; The cool stream flows silently by: The joy bells are greeting the day, And the chimes are adrift in the sky, As we lift up our voices and sing To the Christ Child the Heavenly King. Audience 16. Silent Night Silent night, holy night, All is calm, all is bright, Round yon virgin mother and child, Holy infant, so tender and mild, Sleep in heavenly peace, Sleep in heavenly peace. Silent night, holy night, Shepherds quake at the sight, Glories stream from heaven afar, Heav nly host sings Alleluia, Christ, the Saviour is born, Christ, the Saviour is born. Silent night, holy night, Son of God, love s pure light. Radiant beams from Thy holy face, With the dawn of redeeming grace, Jesus, Lord, at Thy birth, Jesus, Lord, at Thy birth. Audience 17. We Wish You A Merry Christmas We wish you a Merry Christmas, We wish you a Merry Christmas, We wish you a Merry Christmas, And a happy New Year! Good tidings we bring to you and your kin; We wish you a Merry Christmas, And a happy New Year!
