WEDNESDAY 13 DECEMBER 7PM STAGE 88, COMMONWEALTH PARK FREE EVENT! CHARITY
Canberra s 73rd Carols by Candlelight 13 December 2017 Welcome to Carols by Candlelight 2017. The first Canberra Carols by Candlelight concert was held in front of Old Parliament House on Christmas Eve 1945 and continued there until the completion of Stage 88 in Commonwealth Park in 1988. Woden Valley Youth Choir was first involved in leading the singing at Carols by Candlelight in the early 1970s and took over the organisation of the Carols in 1996. Now in its 73rd year, around 10,000 people enjoy the event each Christmas, and funds raised each year go to a local charity. This year the charity is Parkinson s ACT. Due to the generosity of many sponsors and the support of many members of Woden Valley Youth Choir and the wider community, all the expenses of running the evening are covered. This means, donations collected throughout the evening, a percentage of takings from food and drink vendors, as well as proceeds from the sale of candles and carol sheets will all go to Parkinson s ACT. Canberra Times 17 December 1945 Woden Valley Youth Choir Woden Valley Youth Choir was founded in 1969 by Don Whitbread, who, with his wife Barbara accompanying, grew the choir from a small group meeting in his lounge room to a choir of 50. The choir has sung for royalty and prime ministers, at opening and closing ceremonies for international sporting events and performed with the Australian Opera. Barbara Whitbread s father, Ed Gumley was a soloist at the inaugural Canberra Carols by Candlelight, so Woden Valley Youth Choir s connection goes right back to the start. In 1997, Don retired and handed the baton for the choir and Carols by Candlelight to Alpha Gregory. After 20 years at the helm, Alpha retired at the end of 2016 and this year for the first time, Artistic Director Kimberley Steele conducts Woden Valley Youth Choir as they present Carols by Candlelight 2017. Woden Valley Youth Choir thanks Canberra Weekly for producing this carol sheet, and our generous partners for their contributions to Carols by Candlelight 2017. We now invite you to enjoy the carols performed by Woden Valley Youth Choir, Canberra City Band and guest artists. From all of us at Carols by Candlelight, we wish everyone a Merry Christmas.
