My Dear People, THE CALM BEFORE THE STORM This seventh Sunday of Easter is somewhat like the proverbial calm before the storm. The Lord Jesus has ascended into heaven and Pentecost has not yet occurred. Rather than immediately taking up Jesus command to go out to all the nations, the disciples gather in the upper room with some women, and Mary the mother of Jesus, and his brothers (Acts 1:14). There they all devote themselves to prayer. The Gospel recounts the great prayer for the disciples that Jesus offered to his Father in heaven. If the words of Jesus while he was on earth finally began to sink in for the disciples, then gathering to pray was certainly the right choice, for the second reading lets us all know that to follow Christ means to have a share in his sufferings. Psalm I believe that I shall see the good things of the Lord in the land of the living (Psalm 27). Second Reading Glorify God if you suffer for the name of Christian (1 Peter 4:13-16). Gospel The Son will give eternal life to all those who are given to him by the Father (John 17:1-11a). The second part might be more difficult to comprehend. The stumbling block would be the book. We have a book, a missal that is set down on the altar with a very precisely prescribed set of words for the priest to say and the people to sing at the Eucharistic Prayer. In the early days of the church, there were no set formulas for this prayer. The ancients would have raised eyebrows at our bookishness since they preferred to let the prayers roll forth from a gifted leader of prayer. There was a basic shape to the prayer of thanksgiving, and almost general agreement that the words of Christ at the Last Supper ought to be included. By the second century, Justin Martyr wrote that the presider gives thanks at some length... and when he has finished the prayers and the thanksgiving, all the people present give their assent by saying Amen. In the world before books, people could memorize long passages of prose and poetry, and so it is easy to see how particular phrases or expressions passed from church to church. Rev. James Field, Copyright J. S. Paluch Co.

After months of intensive preparation, we are close to the official kickoff of St. Thomas More s Believe and Grow Together capital campaign. Next weekend, every family in the parish community will receive a packet of information, which includes a financial request and instructions on how you can invest in the future of St. Thomas More. In advance of the mailing, I want to express a few thoughts regarding this campaign and what is being asked of our families: Invitation not Expectation Every family will be asked to consider a specific commitment to the campaign. We have gone through an exhaustive process to determine requests that are appropriate for each family. That said, in some cases our request may be too high. In some cases, it may be too low. It is not an expectation. It is an invitation and the starting point for your personal discernment. Ultimately, the parish is grateful for whatever gifts you can provide. Reflect and Pray In advance of the request, I ask that you spend some time reflecting on St. Thomas More, its future, and how you can help. Pray and ask the Lord for guidance. Give in a way that represents the blessings that you have received. Shared Responsibility This campaign should not be shouldered by one family, or a few families. It is the responsibility of the entire parish community to ensure this effort is a success. That means generosity and sacrifice and not just monetarily. We need gifts of time, talent and prayer too. I hope you will join us next week for the official kickoff of our Believe and Grow Together campaign. It s an exciting time and we want you to be a part of something that will mean so much to the future of St. Thomas More Catholic Parish! God Bless, Fr.
