Let Us Show Joy to Be God s Children Pope Francis to Middle East Pilgrims NEWSLETTER JUNE 2017 Grand Prior s Golden Jubilee 11:00am Mass, Saturday 22 July 2017 St Patrick s Cathedral Knights and Dames of the Equestrian Order of the Holy Sepulchre join in congratulating our Grand Prior, His Grace Archbishop Denis Hart DD KGCHS, on his Golden Jubilee of Ordination to the priesthood. His Grace has issued a general invitation through the Diocese to attend a special Mass in the Cathedral at 11:00am on Saturday 22 July 2017. This Mass of Thanksgiving on the 50th anniversary of the Archbishop s priestly ordination will be followed by light refreshments at the Central Hall, 18 Brunswick Street, Fitzroy. Knights and Dames of the Order are particularly welcome at this celebration for our Grand Prior. Dinner with the Franciscan Friars A capacity of 37 Knights, Dames and Friends shared Mass and dinner with the Franciscans at their Friary in Box Hill. It is regrettable that not more could be accommodated. Despite the inclement night causing a delayed start a very spiritual Mass was celebrated by Father Joseph McKay in the historic Chapel. Following the meal with the friars, Brother Fabian Adkins shared his experiences as Sacristan in the Basilica of the Holy Sepulchre and insights into the history and mystery of Our Lord s tomb. A book, The Latin Church in the Middle East, was presented to Brother Fabian and a cheque for $1015 was passed to Father Joe to cover meal costs and assist in the work of the friars. The talk brought back memories for those who had been on pilgrimage and for others was an encouragement to go on pilgrimage or to go again with deeper insights. Our Lieutenancy is planning for a pilgrimage to the Holy Land in May 2019 with Father Simon Grainger. EOHSJ Australia-Victoria June 2017 Newsletter pg. 1

Sharing a Meal at Iftar On Tuesday, 13 June 2017, the House of Abraham, located in Ras Al Amud, a neighborhood in East Jerusalem, hosted more than sixty Christians and Muslims to share a traditional meal breaking the fast. It has become a ritual. Since 2015, the House of Abraham, administered by Secours Catholique Caritas France, annually hosts various representatives of the Church of Jerusalem and the Muslim religious authorities to share in fellowship and a meal during the period of Ramadan. For Muslims, this festive meal is synonymous with rejoicing. Indeed, there is some excitement in the streets of Jerusalem, in addition to many fireworks heard throughout the month of Ramadan. This year the Latin Patriarchate of Jerusalem, organizers of this event in cooperation with Cécile Roy, Director of the House of Abraham, was represented by the Patriarch Emeritus Michel Sabbah who has long worked and still works to facilitate interreligious dialogue in the Holy Land. It is an opportunity for both communities to strengthen their ties and renew their mutual connection. The Latin Church celebrates Corpus Christi On 15 June 2017 Archbishop Pierbattista Pizzaballa, Apostolic Administrator of the Latin Patriarchate celebrated Holy Mass in in solemn commemoration of the reality of the Body and Blood of Christ in the Eucharist. This Feast was created in the thirteenth century at Pope Urban IV s initiative. At the time, the priest carried the Eucharist in procession in the middle of the streets of the city. Today, many processions are held around the world to celebrate the Blessed Sacrament. In Jerusalem, the Mass on the Solemnity of Corpus Christi was celebrated in the Holy Sepulchre by Archbishop Pizzaballa, concelebrated by several priests. It was an opportunity for many faithful to enter into true communion with Christ at the place where he was buried and had risen. The Mass concluded with the traditional procession with the Blessed Sacrament around the Edicule, then Benediction on the three altars, one of which was in the Tomb of Christ to honour him once again.
