Fort Sidney, Nebraska RG518 Fort Sidney, Nebraska Records: 1870-1909 Cubic ft.:.75 Approx. # of Items: 600 and 3 reels of 35mm microfilm HISTORICAL NOTE Sidney Barracks was established in 1867 with a primary function of protecting the Union Pacific Railroad track layers against the threat of hostile indians. In 1869 the post was relocated to the present site at Sidney, Nebraska, and the following year it was renamed Fort Sidney. In the mid 1870's the post became a major strategic point as the initial supply depot on the Sidney-Blackhills trail. Through-out the mid 1870's supplies and passengers traveled the trail to the Red Cloud Indian Agency and beyond to the Black Hills gold fields. In 1878 troops from Fort Sidney were called to participate in the search for Dull Knife's Cheyennes who had escaped from their reservation in Oklahoma, and who were later recaptured near Fort Robinson, Nebraska. Fort Sidney was closed in 1899 and all the buildings sold. SCOPE AND CONTENT NOTE This collection consists of records of Fort Sidney during active and abandoned status, 1870-1909, arranged into four series: 1) Post Returns, 1870-1894; 2) Post Medical Records, 1871-1892; 3) Abandoned Military Reservation File, 1871-1909; and 4) Construction Records, 1869-1894. Series One consists of the Post Returns for Fort Sidney, taken montly and reporting on post activities and personnel to the Adjutant General's Office in Washington. These records were purchased from the National Archives for reference in 1972. Series Two consists of two Post Medical Record volumes micro-filmed by the National Archives for Tom Buecker of Arnold, Nebraska, in November of 1975 and donated to the Historical Society in March of 1983. These volumes relate to the treatment of patients in the post hospital, 1871-1892. Series Three consists of photocopies of original records housed in the National Archives under RG49, Records of the General Land Office. The series includes

correspondence, orders, and legislation during the time when the post was occupied, 1871-1909, and records concerning the disposition of the property after closing, 1894-1909.
