LET S THINK ABOUT THIS Verse 1 of our reading today tells us Jericho was in lockdown. The people of Jericho were terrified now that the Israelites were camped not far from their city. Jericho was a large wealthy city; their walls were very high and thick. The people of Jericho worshipped an idol called Ashteroth, which was a goddess of the moon. The worship of this idol involved many awful things and its worship was one of the worst in all the land of Canaan. God told Joshua what he was to do. Seven priests, were to be chosen and each of them were to blow a rams horn. Also, the armed men and the priests carrying the Ark of the Covenant were to march around with them. Verse 10 tells us no one was to speak. The only noise was the marching of feet and the continuous blowing of horns by the priests. Verse 13 tells us on the first day they marched around the city of Jericho once. In verse 14 we are told that on the second day they marched around the city once. This they did for a total of 6 days. I think the inhabitants of Jericho must have looked on in amazement at this strange sight. As each day drew on, they must have grown more terrified of what was about to happen. If we are on God s side, we do not need to be frightened of the unknown. If we love Jesus and want to do His will He will protect us and keep us safe. Look at Psalm 34:7. MONDAY LET S PRAY Dear Lord, Thank You for my good night s sleep. Thank You for Your love for me. Let your light shine through me today so I can be kind and helpful to others. In Jesus name, Amen. LET S THINK ABOUT THIS Our Bible reading today tells us that on the seventh day the priests carried the Ark of the Covenant, the seven priests blowed the seven rams horns, and all the armed men and Joshua marched around the city of Jericho seven times. On the seventh circuit they were allowed to use their voices and as they shouted, the walls of Jericho came tumbling down! The Children of Israel didn t have to physically pull those walls down. All they had to do was be faithful and obey the instructions that God gave them and God did the rest. There was also a special instruction the Children of Israel had to obey when going into the city of Jericho. They were not to take any treasure for themselves. Most of it had to be burnt up. The silver, gold, bronze and iron were to go into God s storehouse to be used for the sanctuary service. Because God fought the battle for them, the treasures belonged to Him. These were the first fruits of the land. God warned them that if they did take anything for themselves He would put a curse on the camp. All the people of Jericho were aware of what God had done for the Israelites but there was only one person who stepped out in faith and acknowledged the one true God. We know from our reading in verses 17, 22-23 and 25, that Rahab and her family were saved because of Rahab s faith and kindness to the spies. Read Hebrews 11:31 to confirm this. TUESDAY LET S PRAY Dearest Heavenly Father, please help me to rely on Your wisdom. Help me to make good decisions as I go about my day. Thank You for my Bible and may the Words I read help me to walk closer to You. In Jesus name, Amen. MEMORY VERSE - LUKE 12:15 Take heed and beware of covetousness, for one s life does not consist in the abundance of the things he possesses. THERE S POWER IN THE WORD! LET S READ: Joshua 7:1-9 6 Daily Devotional 28

LET S THINK ABOUT THIS From our reading today we learn that, unbeknown to Joshua, one man from the entire Israelite encampment sinned against God and took treasure from the city of Jericho. He kept it for himself instead of putting it into God s service in the sanctuary. Also, because Joshua was so excited about the conquest of Jericho, he sent out spies to watch the city of Ai without consulting God first. The spies, feeling confident, told Joshua to only send a small army as they felt Ai was not any threat to them. But the Canaanites defeated them and 36 men of Israel died. Verse 6 tells us that Joshua was so distressed with the situation that in his grief he lay on his face before the Ark of the Covenant all day long. We can learn from Joshua s experience that, in everything, we need to consult God first. God is the source of all wisdom and if we ask Him, He will guide us and show us what to do. Read Proverbs 3:5-7. FIND AND FINISH THIS VERSE - JOSHUA 7:, on his face before the ark of the LORD until evening, he and the elders of Israel; and they put dust on their heads. WEDNESDAY LET S PRAY Dear Father, help me to be content with what I have. Forgive me for my sins and help me to invite Jesus into my heart everyday to help me walk closer to You. In Jesus name, Amen. MEMORY VERSE - LUKE 12:15 Take heed and beware of covetousness, for one s life does not consist in the abundance of the things he possesses. THERE S POWER IN THE WORD! LET S READ: Joshua 7:10-26 8 Daily Devotional 28

LET S THINK ABOUT THIS Our reading today tells us that God informed Joshua that there was sin in the camp. Someone had brought treasure from the city of Jericho for his own personal use. God warned Joshua that He would not be with them until the man was found who stole God s first fruits. Joshua investigated and found it was a man named Achan. Achan had disobeyed. He had coveted meaning he wanted what was not his. Achan had put the entire encampment in danger. Achan knew he had done wrong but he only fessed up when the finger was pointed at him. His repentance was not sincere the thought of owning glittering possessions had overtaken all sense and reasoning. Achan died for his sin. Covetousness is a serious thing. The tenth Commandment in Exodus 20:17 tells us not to covet. In today s world we live with a lot of worldly possessions meaning we have lots of stuff. This can be a snare, as it can become a barrier for us in our growing relationship with God. God doesn t want the possessions of this life to get in the way of Jesus reaching our hearts. Do you have stuff that is getting in the way of growing closer to Jesus? That s something we can all think about! FIND AND FINISH THIS VERSE - JOSHUA 7: So Joshua sent messengers, and they ran to the tent; and there it was,,. WHAT DID YOU LEARN TODAY WITH THE KING? Jericho 9

THURSDAY LET S PRAY Dear God, thank You for the many blessings You provide for me. Help me to remember to put You first in all I do. I love You Lord. Thank You for my Bible. In Jesus name, Amen. MEMORY VERSE - LUKE 12:15 Take heed and beware of covetousness, for one s life does not consist in the abundance of the things he possesses. THERE S POWER IN THE WORD! LET S READ: Joshua 8:1-13 10 Daily Devotional 28

LET S THINK ABOUT THIS From our reading today we learned that God told Joshua he could go up to the city of Ai and God would give him victory. Also this time they could take the treasures or spoils from the city for themselves. The rest of our reading told us in detail the war tactics Joshua was to use to win the battle. This time Joshua took 30,000 men instead of the 3,000 he took before. Because the first fruits or the spoils of Jericho had gone to God, God was now allowing them to take the treasures from the city of Ai. We can apply these principles to our own lives as well. When we put God first in our lives above our own personal needs or wants, God will eventually allow the blessings to flow to us. If we put God first, He will then put us first by blessing us. FIND AND FINISH THIS VERSE - JOSHUA 8: So Joshua arose, and all the people of war, to go up against Ai; and Joshua chose thirty. WHAT DID YOU LEARN TODAY WITH THE KING? Jericho 11

FRIDAY LET S PRAY Dear Lord, thank You for keeping me safe today. Please help me prepare my heart for Your return. Protect my mind from Satan and keep me close to You. In Jesus name, Amen. MEMORY VERSE - LUKE 12:15 Take heed and beware of covetousness, for one s life does not consist in the abundance of the things he possesses. THERE S POWER IN THE WORD! LET S READ: Joshua 8:14-29 12 Daily Devotional 28

LET S THINK ABOUT THIS Our reading tells us that the war tactics that God told Joshua to perform were successful. Joshua s army ambushed the city of Ai and utterly destroyed it. God does not ask us to go to war with anyone today, but He wants us to be aware of the great controversy between God and Satan. We need to decide whose side we are on. Do we choose to give our hearts to Jesus, to be obedient and faithful to God s Word and allow him to lead in our lives? Or do we reject the Holy Spirit s prompting on our hearts and choose to follow man and the ways of the world and let Satan rule our hearts? We are now in a spiritual war and we need to ask Jesus everyday to protect our hearts and minds and prepare us for Jesus second coming. FIND AND FINISH THIS VERSE - JOSHUA 8: So all the people who were in Ai were called together to pursue them.. WHAT DID YOU LEARN TODAY WITH THE KING? Jericho 13

SABBATH LET S PRAY Dear Father, Thank You for the Sabbath day. I thank You that I can rest from the busy world and I can especially focus on You for one day. Help me to gain a blessing from today so I can be a blessing to someone else. In Jesus name, Amen. MEMORY VERSE - LUKE 12:15 Take heed and beware of covetousness, for one s life does not consist in the abundance of the things he possesses. THERE S POWER IN THE WORD! LET S READ: Joshua 8:30-35 14 Daily Devotional 28

THOUGHT FOR THE WEEK After conquering the first two cities of Canaan Jericho and Ai Joshua called all the Children of Israel to the mountains of Shechem. Here they were to renew their covenant with God. Joshua built an altar and offered animal sacrifices to the LORD. Also a large replica of the Ten Commandments was made and placed on the monument so everyone could see and read them. These were read to the Israelites as well as the additional laws written by Moses. This event was to occur every seven years. Also, at this time Joshua read the blessings and curses that would come depending on whether they kept the law or not. Taking possession of the land that God had promised the Israelites for hundreds of years was a big responsibility and not to be taken lightly. They were to represent God and His character to the then known world. Today as Christians, we have the same responsibility to reflect God s character. Check out Matthew 5:16. SABBATH QUIZ 1. What were the priests trumpets made from? 2. How many times did the Israelites march around the city of Jericho on the seventh day? 3. Who coveted and took items from the city of Jericho? 4. What were the two mountains called where the Israelites gathered to hear the law? 5. What was the name of the second city that the Israelites conquered? Jericho 15

This week we will study about the fall of Jericho and how God needed a faithful and obedient people to reflect His character. Torchlight The Israelites had not gained the victory by their own power; the conquest had been wholly the Lord s; That which could not be destroyed by fire, the silver, and the gold, and the vessels of brass and of iron, was to be devoted to the service of the tabernacle.
