St. Thomas More pray for us! St. Thomas More lived during a time much like ours, a time full of rapid social change. The cultural war of his day saw the fragmentation of European civilization, a break from Apostolic Authority, and the successor of St. Peter in England. St. Thomas More was a lawyer, judge, and statesman. He was also Roman Catholic, very spiritual, and pious. He was a dedicated family man. Law plays a central role in unifying a society with shared vision on the human person. It also acts as a teacher. When law is divorced from morality, chaos ensues. St Thomas More lived a life of virtue that was taught and encouraged in education. Today personal experience and rights, such as the dignity of the human person and the understanding of marriage and family, are undermined in society. Individualism is trumping and swallowing up the common good. Civil laws are breaking away from natural law, divine law, and the commonly observed and enshrined societal norms that have been around for centuries in western civilization. Our situation is changing so rapidly that it is becoming increasingly difficult to follow one s own conscience, if formed by the Church in a society where civil laws contravene divine law and natural law in unprecedented ways. Thomas More submitted himself and the formation of his conscience to Truth, and he found freedom. He was so free that he became a witness against the decline and disorder of society, the common good and human dignity. St. Thomas More s life and integrity remind us of the danger for an individual to construct his/her own norms based on an ultimately flawed understanding of the liberty of conscience. This weekend we welcome Cardinal O Brien into our midst, whose presence reminds us of our unity with Apostolic Authority and our unity and communion with Pope Francis, the successor of Peter. Governor J. Joseph Garrahy receives the St. Thomas More Medal of Virtue for practicing virtue as taught by the Church in his public service. He was an outstanding leader who promoted laws that protected the dignity of all human persons and the real common good, as taught in the social doctrine of our faith. May St. Thomas More and our Feast be an occasion for each of us to pray for our church, our state, and our country. May lawmakers and judges cultivate a society that is truly just for all men and women from conception until natural death. May those laws that obscure the common good and the human person in any way be changed. May more legislators, attorneys, and judges be faithfully guided and become witnesses to God. St. Thomas More witnessed faithfully by his words, charity, and public life. Fr. Taillon

Halloran Hall Tuesdays beginning July 9th In honor of the Year of Faith, the Summer Bible Study will be surveying the Catechism of the Catholic Church, published just 20 years ago this year. All theology takes its ultimate foundation in the Bible. Are there dogmas or doctrines that you have been pondering since your childhood faith formation??? This will be a precious opportunity to answer those questions and explore the Biblical roots of orthodox Christianity. We will find the answers in the CCC, in church fathers and in the Bible. Group meets every Tuesday in July and August following the 8AM Mass in the Msgr. Halloran Hall, St. Veronica, beginning July 9th. No need to purchase the Catechism--copies will be provided at the class. Questions or moreinformation, contact: Maryann Knag, 203.213.4809 or mmknag@aol.com. Do you have a computer or laptop that you do not use or can do without? Consider donating your computer or laptop to a school in need. Jean Flero Sainatus, principal of Jacquot Public School in Haiti explains: As we all know, children are the future of our world. With technology becoming such an intrinsic part of everyone's lives, all should at least know how to use a computer. My name is Jean Flero Sainatus, principal of 'Ecole Nationale de Jacquot' (Public School of Jacquot Haiti) visiting the U.S. for a month and staying with the parents of Joseph Brice who is a seminarian for the diocese of Providence. Most of my students have never even seen a computer. That has kept me up at night. Therefore, I am appealing to your concern for education and children to help me establish a computer Lab so that those children may learn how to use a computer. Consequently, if you have a computer or laptop at home that you do not use or can spare, please consider donating it to the school. Your Brother in Christ, Jean Flero Sainatus If you able to donate your computer or laptop please contact Nicholas Robenhymer at nrobenhymer@gmail.com or Joseph Brice atbricenet@hotmail.com.
