During Great Lent Before the Presanctified Liturgy St. George Greek Orthodox Church 401 Truxtun Ave. Bakersfield, CA 93308 (661) 325-8694

Introduction Early Christians kept their ancient Jewish custom of praying during the various hours of the day. The Ninth hour occurs about 3:00pm: it is significant because this the time that Jesus died on the Cross: "And at the ninth hour...jesus uttered a loud cry and breathed His last." (Mark 15: 34,37).. It is when He promised His kingdom to the repentant thief. We give Him thanksgiving for these saving events. O Christ God, at the ninth hour You tasted death in the flesh for our sake: mortify the rebellion of our flesh and save us! In the midst of two thieves, Your Cross was revealed as the balancebeam of righteousness. For while the one was led down to hell by the burden of his blaspheming, the other was lightened of his sins to the knowledge of things divine. O Christ our God, glory to You! Prayer of Saint Basil the Great O Master, Lord Jesus Christ our God, You have led us to the present hour, in which, as You hung upon the life-giving tree, You made a way into Paradise for the penitent thief, and by death destroyed death: Cleans us, Your unworthy servants, for we fall into sin continuously and are not worthy to lift up our eyes and look upon the heights of heaven. Forgive us for departing from the path of righteousness and following the desires of our own hearts. We implore Your unending goodness: Spare us, O Lord, according to the multitude of Your mercies, and save us for Your holy name's sake, for our days are passing away in vanity. Take us from the hand of the adversary and forgive our sins, and mortify in us all impure thoughts. Help us to lay aside our old ways so that we may be clothed with new resolve and may dedicate our lives to You, our Master and Benefactor, so that by following Your commandments, we may come to the eternal rest which is the abode of all those who rejoice. For You are the true joy and exultation of those who love You, O Christ our God, and to You we ascribe glory, together with the Father who is without beginning and Your all-holy, good and lifegiving Spirit, now and ever and unto ages of ages. Amen. Through the prayers of our holy fathers, may the Lord have mercy on us Amen. 1

O Christ God, at the ninth hour You tasted death in the flesh for our sake: mortify the rebellion of our flesh and save us! 2

Ninth Hour During the Great Fast Before the Liturgy Priest: Blessed is our God, always, now and forever, and to the ages of ages. Amen. Priest: Glory to You, O God, glory to You. O Heavenly King, Comforter, the Spirit of truth, Who are present everywhere and fills all things, Treasury of good things and Giver of life: come and dwell in us, and cleanse us of all impurity; and save our souls, O good One. Holy God, Holy Mighty, Holy Immortal, have mercy on us (3). Glory to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Spirit, now and ever, and to the ages of ages. Amen. All-holy Trinity, have mercy on us. Lord, cleanse us of our sins. Master, pardon our iniquities. Holy One, visit and heal our infirmities for Your name s sake. Lord, have mercy. Lord, have mercy. Lord, have mercy. Glory to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Spirit, now and ever, and to the ages of ages. Amen. Our Father, Who art in the heaven, hallowed be Thy name. Thy kingdom come, Thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread and forgive us our trespasses as we forgive those who trespass against us. And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from the evil one. Priest: For Thine is the kingdom and the power and the glory, of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit, now and ever, and to the ages of ages. Amen. Lord, have mercy. (12) Glory to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Spirit, now and ever, and to the ages of ages. Amen. 3

Come, let us worship and fall down before God, our King. Come, let us worship and fall down before Christ God, our King. Come, let us worship and fall down before Christ Himself, our King and God. Psalm 83 How beloved are Your dwellings, Lord of hosts; my soul longs and faints for the courts of the Lord. My heart and my flesh have rejoiced in the living God. For the sparrow has found herself a house, and the turtledove a nest for herself where she may lay her young, even Your altars, Lord of hosts, my King and my God. Blessed are those who dwell in Your house; they shall praise You to ages of ages. Blessed is the man whose help is from You; he has made ascents in his heart, in the valley of weeping, in the place which he has appointed. Yes, for the lawgiver will give blessings; they shall go from strength to strength, the God of gods shall be seen in Sion. Lord God of hosts, hear my prayer; give ear, God of Jacob. O God our Defender, behold, and look on the face of Your anointed one. For one day in Your courts is better than thousands elsewhere. I have chosen to be an outcast in the house of my God rather than to dwell in the tents of sinners. For the Lord loves mercy and truth, God will give grace and glory; the Lord will not withhold good things from those who walk in innocence. Lord God of hosts, blessed is the man that hopes in You. 4

Psalm 84 You have been gracious to Your land, Lord; You have turned back the captivity of Jacob. You have forgiven the iniquities of Your people, You have covered all their sins. You have made all Your wrath to cease, You have turned back from the wrath of Your anger. Turn us back, O God of our salvation, and turn away Your anger from us. Will You be wrathful with us to the ages? Or will You draw out Your wrath from generation to generation? O God, You will turn and quicken us, and Your people shall be glad in You. Show us Your mercy, Lord, and give us Your salvation. I will hear what the Lord God will speak in me; for He will speak peace to His people, and to His saints and to those who turn their heart to Him. Surely His salvation is near to those who fear Him, that glory may dwell in our land. Mercy and truth are met together, righteousness and peace have kissed each other. Truth has sprung up out of the earth, and righteousness has looked down from heaven. Yes, for the Lord will give goodness, and our land shall yield her fruit. Righteousness shall go before Him and shall set His footsteps in the way. Psalm 85 Bow down Your ear, Lord, and hear me, for I am poor and needy. Preserve my soul, for I am holy; save Your servant that hopes in You, my God. 5

Have mercy on me, Lord, for I will cry to You all the day long; make the soul of Your servant glad, for I have lifted up my soul to You. For You, Lord, are good and gentle, and plenteous in mercy to all those who call on You. Give ear, Lord, to my prayer, and attend to the voice of my supplication. In the day of my affliction I have cried to You, for You have heard me. There is none like You among the gods, Lord, nor are there any works like Your works. All nations whom You have made shall come and shall worship before You, Lord, and shall glorify Your name. For You are great and work wonders; You alone are God. Guide me, Lord, in Your way, and I will walk in Your truth; let my heart rejoice that I may fear Your name. I will confess You, Lord my God, with all my heart, and I will glorify Your name to the ages. For Your mercy is great on me, and You have delivered my soul from the nethermost Hades. O God, transgressors have risen up against me, and the assembly of the mighty has sought after my soul, and they have not set You before them. But You, Lord my God, are compassionate and merciful, long suffering and plenteous in mercy, and true. Look upon me, and have mercy upon me; give Your strength to Your servant, and save the son of Your handmaiden. Work in me a sign for good, and let those who hate me behold and be put to shame; for You, Lord, have helped me and comforted me. 6

Glory to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Spirit, now and ever, and to the ages of ages. Amen. Alleluia, alleluia, alleluia. Glory to You, O God (3). Lord have mercy. Lord have mercy. Lord have mercy. Troparia You Who at the ninth hour tasted death in the flesh for our sake, deaden the arrogance of our flesh, Christ God, and save us. Let my supplication draw near before You, Lord; according to Your oracle give me understanding. You Who at the ninth hour tasted death in the flesh for our sake, deaden the arrogance of our flesh, Christ God, and save us. Let my petition come before You, Lord; according to Your oracle deliver me. You Who at the ninth hour tasted death in the flesh for our sake, deaden the arrogance of our flesh, Christ God, and save us. Theotokion Glory to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Spirit, now and ever, and to the ages of ages. Amen. You Who were born of a Virgin and endured crucifixion, good One; You Who crushed death by Your death, and as God showed forth the resurrection; do not turn away from those whom You have created with Your own hands; show them Your love for mankind, show forth as an intercessor the Theotokos who gave birth to You and save, our Savior, a desperate people. Then: For the sake of Your holy name, do not totally abandon us, nor disannul Your covenant; and, for the sake Abraham Your beloved, of Isaac Your servant, and of Israel Your holy one, do not take away Your mercy from us. 7

Trisagion Holy God, Holy Mighty, Holy Immortal, have mercy on us (3). Amen. Lenten Troparia of the Ninth Hour Seeing the Author of life hanging on the Cross, the thief said: Were it not God incarnate Who is crucified with us, the sun would not have hidden its rays, nor would the earth have quaked and trembled. But You Who endures all things, remember me, Lord, in Your Kingdom. Glory to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Spirit. In the midst of two thieves, Your Cross was found to be a balance of justice; for the one was borne down to Hades by the weight of his blasphemy, but the other was raised up from his sins to the knowledge of theology; Christ God, glory to You. Now and ever, and to the ages of ages. Amen. 8

When she who bore the Lamb and Shepherd, and Savior of the world, beheld Him on the Cross, she said with tears: The world rejoices at receiving redemption, but my heart burns as I see Your crucifixion which You endure for all, my Son and my God. Kontakion During the Fourth Week of Great Lent we read the Kontakion of the Veneration of the Cross. The fiery sword no longer guards the gate of Eden, for in a strange and glorious way the wood of the Cross has quenched its flames. The sting of death and the victory of Hades are now destroyed, for You have come, my Savior, crying to those in Hades: Return again to paradise. Lord, have mercy. (12) Glory to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Spirit, now and ever, and to the ages of ages. Amen. More honorable than the Cherubim, and more glorious beyond compare than the Seraphim; without defilement you gave birth to God the Word, truly Theotokos, we magnify you. In the name of the Lord, father, bless. Priest: Through the prayers of our holy fathers, Lord Jesus Christ our God have mercy on us and save us. Amen. Prayer of Saint Ephraim the Syrian Priest: O Lord and Master of my life, take from me the spirit of sloth, meddling, lust of power, and idle talking. Prostration Priest: But grant rather a spirit of chastity, humility, patience, and love to me Your servant. Prostration Priest: Yes, O Lord and King, grant me to see my own errors and not to judge my brother; for You are blessed unto the ages of ages. Amen. Prostration 9

Symbol of the Faith I believe in one God, the Father, the Almighty, Creator of heaven and earth, and of all things visible and invisible; And in one Lord, Jesus Christ, the only-begotten Son of God, begotten of the Father before all ages; Light of Light, true God of true God, begotten, not created, of one essence with the Father, through Whom all things were made; Who for us men and for our salvation came down from the heavens and was incarnate by the Holy Spirit and the Virgin Mary, and became man; Crucified for us under Pontius Pilate, He suffered and was buried; Rising on the third day according to the Scriptures, And ascending into the heavens, He is seated at the right hand of the Father; And coming again in glory to judge the living and the dead, His kingdom shall have no end; And in the Holy Spirit, the Lord, the Creator of life, Who proceeds from the Father, Who together with the Father and the Son is worshipped and glorified, Who spoke through the prophets; In one, holy, catholic, and apostolic Church; I acknowledge one baptism for the remission of sins; I expect the resurrection of the dead; And the life of the age to come. Amen. Priest Remit, pardon, forgive, God, our offenses, both voluntary and involuntary, in deed and word, in knowledge and ignorance, by night and by day, in mind and thought; forgive us all things, since You are good and love mankind. Amen. 12

Priest For Thine is the kingdom and the power and the glory, of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit, now and ever, and to the ages of ages. Amen. Troparia During the Fourth Week of Great Lent we read the Kontakion of the Veneration of the Cross: Kontakion The fiery sword no longer guards the gate of Eden, for in a strange and glorious way the wood of the Cross has quenched its flames. The sting of death and the victory of Hades are now destroyed, for You have come, my Savior, crying to those in Hades: Return again to paradise. Then, Lord, have mercy 40, and Prayer of the Hours. You Who at all times and at every hour are worshipped and glorified both in heaven and on earth, Christ God; Who are long suffering and generous in mercy and compassion; Who love the just and show mercy to those hardened in sin; Who call all people to salvation through the promise of good things to come: receive, Lord, our supplications at this time, and direct our lives according to Your commandments. Sanctify our souls; purify our bodies; set our minds aright; cleanse our thoughts; and deliver us from all calamity, wrath and distress. Surround us with Your holy angels, so that guided and guarded by them we may attain the unity of the faith, and the comprehension of Your ineffable glory; for You are blessed to the ages of ages. Amen. During the other weeks, we read the following Troparia as indicated: 13

1. Of the Transfiguration Grave Tone Upon the mountain You were transfigured, Christ God, and your disciples saw as much of Your glory as they could hold, so that seeing You crucified they would know that You had willed to suffer your passion and would proclaim to the world that You are truly the reflection of the Father. 2. The Kontakion of the Day (one of the four below) On Monday, of the Archangels Supreme commander of God s armies, minister of divine glory, guide of men and prince of the bodiless angels; ask what is good for us and for great mercy, as the supreme commander of the bodiless hosts. On Tuesday, of the Forerunner Prophet of God and Forerunner of grace, your head has blossomed from the earth as a sacred rose. We are ever being healed, for as of old, you preach repentance to the world. On Wednesday and Friday, of the Cross You Who were lfted up on the Cross by Your own will grant Your compassion to the new commonwealth called by Your name, Christ God; gladden by Your power our faithful rulers, granting them victory against adversaries, having Your alliance as their weapon of peace, an invincible standard. On Thursday, of the Apostles You have taken, Lord, the firm and divinely inspired preachers, the leaders of Your disciples, into rest and the enjoyment of your blessings; You have accepted the labors of each and their death above every burnt offering, You Who alone know the secrets of our hearts. 3. Kontakion of the Church The Kontakion of the Church. 4. Martyrikon of the Tone Martyrikon according to the tone of the week: pages 15-22. 14

Tone 1 Monday The victorious martyrs clothed themselves in You, Lord; You were their glory in their sufferings, their crown and their reward. Steadfastly enduring torment, they overthrew the wicked; and through the power of God they were granted victory from heaven. Through their intercessions, O God, grant us Your great mercy. Tuesday As faithful soldiers you believed with one accord; you were not terrified, holy ones, by the threats of tyrants, but, taking up the precious Cross, you eagerly followed Christ, and finishing the course you received victory from heaven. Glory to Him Who gave you strength; glory to Him Who crowned you, glory to Him Who through you grants healing to all. Wednesday Accept in supplication, Lord Who love mankind, the sufferings that the saints endured for You; and, we beseech You, heal all our distress. Thursday Let us all pray to the martyrs of Christ, for they intercede for our salvation; let us all draw near to them with faith, for they dispense the grace of healing, and as guardians of the faith they drive away the hosts of demons. Friday The victorious martyrs clothed themselves in You, Lord; You were their glory in their sufferings, their crown and their reward. Steadfastly enduring torment, they overthrew the wicked; and through the power of God they were granted victory from heaven. Through their intercessions, O God, grant us Your great mercy. Kοntakion of the Deceased, page 23. 15

Tone 2 Monday You covered the heavens with clouds, Lord, and on earth You were the covering and protection of the martyrs; they patiently endured the torments inflicted by the impious and uncovered the false error of idolatry; deliver us from the invisible enemy through their intercessions, and save us Savior. Tuesday You have made Your saints to shine brighter than gold, and in Your love You have glorified Your holy ones. At their intercessions, Christ God, grant peace to our life and make our prayers ascend as incense, You Who alone rests among the saints. Wednesday Martyrs of the Lord, blessed is the earth on which your blood was shed, and holy are the shrines that have received your bodies. For in the arena you openly triumphed over the enemy, and with boldness you preached Christ. We entreat you, pray to Him that in His love He may grant salvation to our souls. Thursday Apostles, Martyrs, Prophets, hierarchs, venerable ones and righteous ones, who have fought the good fight to the end and kept the faith; since you have boldness in the presence of the Savior, we entreat you, pray to Him on our behalf that in His love He may grant salvation to our souls. Friday Founded on the rock that cannot be shaken, the saints resisted tyrants bravely, and through torment they obtained their crowns; through their intercessions, save us, O God. Kοntakion of the Deceased, page 23. 16

Tone 3 Monday Who would not be amazed at the victorious struggles of the holy, undefeated martyrs? Who would not wonder at all that they endured? Burned in fire and scourged, thrown to wild beasts and slain, they triumphed over the Adversary; spurning the flattery of kings and unmoved by the threats of persecutors, they received crowns from Christ our God, Who grants great mercy to the world. Tuesday Your brave endurance, glorious martyrs, defeated the devices of the enemy from whom all evil comes; therefore, you were counted worthy of eternal blessedness. Intercede, then, with the Lord for the salvation of Christ s faithful flock, you witnesses of the truth. Wednesday As the almighty, Lord, You have glorified the memory of Your victorious martyrs, for You have strengthened them to follow You in Your sufferings. They bravely overcame the power of the devil, and thus received gifts of healing. Through their intercessions, Christ Who love mankind, grant peace to our souls. Thursday Shielded by the armor of Christ, and taking up the weapons of the faith, you confronted the legions of the Enemy, and bravely cast them down; sustained by your hope in the life to come, you endured the torments and the threats of your persecutors; you received the crown, valiant witnesses for Christ our God. Friday You shine as radiant lights through your faith, holy and glorious martyrs, physicians of the true worship of God. You were not terrified by the torments of the tyrants, rather you cast down the blasphemous teachings of idolatry, taking up the true Cross as your emblem of victory. Kοntakion of the Deceased, page 23. 17

Tone 4 Monday Today at the memorial of the victorious martyrs, the heavenly hosts come to enlighten the hearts of believers, and to make grace shine upon the whole created world; through their intercessions, O God, the Mighty One, grant us Your great mercy. Tuesday As with porphyry and fine linen, Your Church is adorned with the blood of Your martryrs in all the world, and through them she cries aloud to You, Christ our God: Have compassion on Your people, grant peace to Your flock, and great mercy to our souls. Wednesday Your martyrs, Lord, in their struggles have brought away the crowns of incorruption, from You our God; by having Your power, they tore down tyrants; and they shattered the feeble audacities of demons. Through their supplications, Christ God, save our souls. Thursday Armed with Your Cross, Christ our God, Your victorious Martyrs defeated the devices of the enemy from whom all evil comes. They shone like torches, guiding mortal men, and they grant healing to those that ask with faith. Through their intercessions save Your world. Friday The solemn feast of those who suffered martyrdom has made the Church an earthly heaven, and angels now rejoice with men. Through the intercessions of Your martyrs, Christ God, save our souls. Tone Plagal 1 Monday Your Martyrs, Lord, longed to drink from the cup of Your sufferings; they forsook the pleasures of this world and shared in the life of the angels. Through their intercessions, grant peace to our souls. Tuesday Through the miracles of Your holy Martyrs, Christ our God, You have given us a rampart that cannot be destroyed. Through their prayers, scatter to the winds the schemes of the heathen and strengthen the rulers of our land, for You alone are good and love mankind. Wednesday You have made Your victorious martyrs, Lord, mighty defenders of the inhabited earth, Savior, putting the passions to flight; through their intercessions, save our souls. Thursday The heavenly powers marveled at the accomplishments of the holy martyrs, for in mortal bodes they triumphed over the bodiless Enemy by the power of the Cross; now they intercede before the Lord for the salvation of our souls. Friday Today the memory of the victorious martyrs shines with light from heaven; the choir of angels keeps the festival, and mankind celebrates the feast with them, for they intercede before the Lord, that He might have mercy on our souls. Tone Plagal 2 Monday You are the never-setting Sun for the just; enlightened by Your radiance, the saints shine endlessly like resplendent stars, eclipsing the pale glow of the impious; through their intercessions, our Savior, enlighten my soul, Lord, and save me. Tuesday With patient endurance the saints suffered and contended, and they received the prize of victory from You; they brought to nothing the schemes of the transgressors, and wore crowns of incorruption; through their intercessions, O God, grant to us Your great mercy. Wednesday Persecuted by the tyrants, the Martyrs endured and suffered bravely; and near them stood the choirs of Angels holding prizes of victory; in their wisdom they astonished rulers and sovereigns, and by confessing Christ they overthrew the devil; Glory be to You, Lord, Who has made them strong. Thursday The memory of Your athletes, Lord, is shown forth like Paradise in Eden, for it brings joy to all creation; through their intercessions, grant us peace and great mercy. Friday The Lord has given glory to those who preached Christ in the arena and who did not fear the threats of the ungodly. They suffered with fortitude, and thereby cast down the pride of the transgressors. As their due reward, Christ gave them the grace of healing, and they ceaselessly intercede for the salvation of our souls. Kοntakion of the Deceased, page 23. 20

Grave Tone Monday Lord, Your martyrs fought the good fight on earth; they triumphed over the Enemy and destroyed the error of idolatry; thus they have received the crown of victory from Your hand, Lord and God of goodness, Who grants to us great mercy. Tuesday Rejoice, you righteous, and let the heavens be glad; for, fighting bravely upon earth, the martyrs have brought error to an end. Let the Church celebrate a feast of joy and triumph, giving glory to the Judge Who alone confers the victory, Christ our God Who grants the world great mercy. Wednesday You despised the godless tyrants, holy ones, and, scorning all the pain of tortures you did not deny your faith in Christ; pray then to God Who loves mankind, for the salvation of our souls. Thursday We entreat you, the saints, to intercede for the forgiveness of our sins, and to pray for our deliverance from the torment that awaits us and from bitter death. Friday Your martyrs, Lord, defeated the enemy, and armed with the power of Christ they put to shame the error of idolatry; therefore with the angels we cry out to You, Christ, glorifying You with a hymn of victory. Through their intercessions we beseech You to save us. Kοntakion of the Deceased, page 23. 21

Tone Plagal 4 Monday Holy Martyrs, God has made you noetic torches; by the power of faith, you have dispersed the dark mist of error; you have made the lamp of your soul to burn brightly, and in the company of the Bridegroom you have entered into the heavenly bridal chamber; and now we beseech you, intercede for the salvation of our souls. Tuesday Today the tabernacle of the heavens is brightly illumined with lights; in it the heavenly hosts rejoice and are joined by the choirs of saints in their joyful celebration of the memorial of the victorious martyrs; through their intercessions, Christ, send peace to the world and great mercy to our souls. Wednesday You have steadfastly walked the narrow way of sorrow, martyrs, and endured the troubled waters of temptation; now you have received a dwelling-place among the ministering angels, having proven yourselves as a rock of patient fortitude, a firm foundation of the faith. Intercede with Christ God for the salvation of our souls. Thursday Holy martyrs, you bravely fought the good fight unto the end, resisting your persecutors; surrendering your bodies to death here on earth, you were crowned with life in heaven. Friday Through their self-restraint, the Martyrs of Christ put to death the fiery impulses of passion. They received the grace to drive out diseases from the sick, and to work miracles both when alive and after they were dead, a marvelous wonder! For their bare bones are a source of healing. Glory be to God, the only wise Creator. Kοntakion of the Deceased, page 23. 22
