mahomet united methodist church Our Mission: To lead people to Jesus and help them grow as disciples. From John, Recently, in a Prayer of Dedication for our offering I said, Let us not look at the few who have more and be envious. Help us to see the many with less and be generous. From your comments, that resonated with you. That sentiment comes from a Prayer of Confession in The United Methodist Book of Worship #485, written by Paul J. Flucke. O God, source of all that makes life possible, giver of all that makes life good: We gather to give you our thanks, yet we confess that we have often failed to live our thankfulness. What we have we take for granted, and grumble about what we lack. We have squandered your bounty, with little thought of those who will come after us. We are more troubled by the few who have more than by the many who have less. Forgive us, O God. In this hour of worship, accept our thanksgiving; and teach us to make gratitude and sharing our way of life; through the grace of Jesus Christ. Amen. One of the surest ways to unhappiness and being unhealthy is to dwell on what others have that you don t. There will always be someone with more, so that way of orientating ourselves will always serve discontent. (Perhaps this is why the Ten Commandments include Thou shalt not covet. ) Being mindful of those who have less is humbling and disturbing, but it is the way to a healthy perspective. It is the NEW MEMBER ORIENTATION New Member Orientation with Rev. McIntosh will be February 16 at noon in the Conference Room next to the offices. Lunch will be provided. If you are considering membership, if you would like to learn more, if you have questions, please come. This meeting is not required for membership, but helpful. Please contact Rev. McIntosh at 217-586-2147 or jmcintosh@mumc.org. 1/30/2013 Volume 19, Issue 2 reality. It reminds us of how blessed we are. Let us never be found ungrateful. It is a concern that so many are desperate for what we take for granted or even waste. We enjoy enough food, safe water, shelter and comfort, safety, convenience, advanced medical care, opportunities for arts and education, and one of the most just societies. Of all our blessings, the freedoms we enjoy are the most precious. How our days would be shaped with gratitude and happiness, if we would take but a few moments to appreciate what we have and more so humbly, that others don t have. Let forgiveness, appreciation, thankfulness, gratitude, generosity, and contentment be our way in the world. It is a way of grace. It is the way of Jesus Christ. 3 THANK YOU Dear friends at Mahomet UMC, It is so great to hear from all of you cards, flowers, visits, phone calls, prayer shawls and such. I ve used the nice warm prayer shawls many times thinking of those who made them. This was my first Christmas bag (not putting in but receiving). It was with great anticipation when I started to see what was there just like little ones going through their Christmas stocking. It was fun and I do appreciate it but really don t need all the good food. Certainly makes a brighter day when you re unable to live as you did before old age! I miss church it s not Sunday without church. I do attend a Bible study weekly. Love and God Bless All, Alma Pugh I want to thank everyone for the many lovely things in that pretty red Christmas bag. I showed my family what nice things our Methodist Church does for those living alone and who have lost a loved one. I look in that bag and see many things! Thanks so much. In Christian Love, Virginia Berger Thank you for remembering me with cards during the past year. Blessings and Love, Berny Haworth A belated thank you to everyone for the Christmas gift bag that Terry and Adam Dodd delivered to Mom (Beulah Newman) at the nursing home in December. She was as excited as a child when she looked through all the thoughtful gifts you provided. Thank you so much for remembering her you really made her day! Sandi Yarnell I want to thank everyone for all of the prayers and support I have received since the passing of my husband, Dale. Special thanks go out to Rev. McIntosh for the nice memorial service, to Linda Walker for the beautiful organ music, and to the United Methodist Women for planning the meal after the service. God Bless All of You, Marcia Rosenbery Dear Mahomet UMC Family, Thanks for the bag at Christmas I appreciated the gifts and cards very much. Thanks again, Lucille Clapper Dear Church Friends, Many, many thanks to all who contributed cards, snacks and other thoughtful gifts even a great book for our Christmas bag. Getting our driveway shoveled by that young delivery boy, Rick Swearingen was even more appreciated. Thanks again and may God bless you all. Fondly, Bob and Pat O Neal A big thank you to all who brought chili or pies to be judged or just shared with everyone for the Chili Cook-Off and Pie Baking Contests. We hope you enjoyed a warm night of fellowship, too! The Mahomet UMC Intergenerational Mission Team is dedicated to helping others, far and near, and your support helps us to do just that! We went to closing on October 4 th. The house was bought in 2007 for $159,900 and sold in 2013 for $165,000 with $14,000 in expenses that included closing costs, realtor s fees, and unreimbursed fix-up costs. That left net cash balance of $151,000. The mortgage of about $87,000 has been paid off, leaving a balance of about $63,000. The church treasurer will invest half of that in a money market account and the remainder will be invested in an account where the Memorial funds are invested. The proceeds of the sale will be earmarked for future use to purchase another parsonage when the need arises. Music News... With the Lenten season just around the corner, we would like to invite new members to join the Chancel Choir or Bell Choir. Chancel Choir is a great way to make new friends, renew old acquaintances, and have a great time, all while singing your praises to our Lord. What could be better? We rehearse on Tuesday nights from 7:30-8:30. The Wesley Bell Choir also meets on Tuesday nights, from 6:30-7:30. We really need some more ringers to complete our group...or to substitute. All players need to be able to read music as well as count. Is there anyone strong out there who can ring the low bells? They are awfully heavy! Please come and join one of the fun groups.
