PROGRAM Health Care Guest Speaker Kevin Slavin C.E.O. St. Joseph s Hospital Program Chair John Susani introduced Mr. Kevin Slavin who is a native of Trenton, New Jersey. Mr. Slavin has been C.E.O. of St. Joseph s Hospital for twelve years, coming to St. Joe s from St. Claire s Health Care System in Morris County. On the national scene, he tells us that the coming elections are of interest because of the future of the Affordable Care Act. The hospital benefits from ACA because of better coordination of patient care, health and wellness goals and the changing payment model. Mr. Slavin reports that St. Joe s provides coverage for its 5,200 employees and their dependents. Insurance groups are attempting mergers which will be opposed by the American Medical Association. Also Pharma costs are rising and under attack. There are incentives and penalties in place to insure that information technology is updated. As far as the State of New Jersey is concerned, he tells us that now that Governor Christie is back he has announced his budget. Subsidies for charity care are currently on hold but the good news is that the Governor has expanded Medicaid and more people are insured on the Exchanges. St. Joe s is a Tier One hospital. On the community level property taxes are a huge issue. St. Joe s is currently tax exempt due to its charity care status and they are looking to preserve that. Mr. Slavin tells us that all incoming patients should check to see if the medical team that will attend you during your stay takes your insurance. Finding that out at the beginning will eliminate receiving surprise bills from different doctors, anesthesiologists, radiologists etc.
St. Joseph s is a premier Catholic Health Care System with strategic planning process in place for future. They will remain Catholic sponsored by The Sisters of Charity Health Care System. St. Joe s also owns St. Vincent s Rehabilitation Center in Cedar Grove, NJ and its own Home Care Agency in Totowa. St. Joseph s Hospital is a Children s Hospital, a Trauma Center with a strong academic center and teaching program. They are also doing robotic surgeries. In addition, there are initiatives to get more engaged in the community and to increase marketing and branding in the community. Mr. Slavin then took questions and a lively discussion ensued. He ended his presentation with a warm and humorous anecdote about the well-loved Sister Jane Brady, his predecessor. Thank you Mr. Slavin and program chair John Susani for giving us a very interesting and informative presentation about St. Joseph s Hospital, a premier hospital in our community. Kevin Slavin C.E.O. St. Joseph s Hospital and John Susani
THE AMERICAN S CREED I believe in the United States of America as a government of the people; whose just powers are derived from the consent of the governed; a democracy in a republic; a sovereign nation of many sovereign states; a perfect Union, and inseparable; established upon those principles of freedom, equality, justice, and humanity for which American patriots sacrificed their lives and fortunes. I therefore believe it is my duty to my country to love it, to support its Constitution, to obey its laws, to respect its flag, and to defend it against all enemies. William Tyler GOD BLESS AMERICA! God Bless our men and women in our Military! Please keep them in your prayers!
