Volume 2, Issue 2 April / May 2009 Derwin Hinson Ministries Newsletter Psalm 150:4 Praise Him with stringed instruments The Last Envelope By Alene Hinson Know therefore that the LORD thy God, He is God, the faithful God, which keepeth covenant and mercy with them that love Him and keep His commandments to a thousand generations...deuteronomy 7:9 As many of you know, our ministry bus blew an engine back in September of 2008, and God has worked miraculously in getting it back on the road. The total cost for this engine repair was about $25,000. We went into 2009 making monthly payments on the balance we still owed on the repair. At the end of January, I wrote out a check for the payment, and as I printed out the envelope, I decided to print an extra one. As I sat there holding the extra envelope in my hand, I prayed, Dear Lord, please let this be the last envelope. I then showed the envelope to Derwin, and we prayed together making the same request to God. February came and I continued to pray that God would bless us with the money needed to pay off the remainder of the repair. On February 26 th I knew I needed to get a check for the payment in the mail. I reluctantly wrote out the check for the payment and slipped it in that envelope I had printed a month earlier, but I didn t mail it. I believed that it was still possible for this to be the last envelope. The next day came and the.continued on page 4 For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life. Derwin Hinson Ministries had the privilege of playing for the Building Bridges Men s Conference sponsored by the Pee Dee Baptist Association. The conference was held at Roberdel Baptist Church in Rockingham, NC. The featured speaker was former New York Yankee, Bobby Richardson. Mr. Richardson was the MVP of 1960 World Series and is the only player from the losing team to ever be selected MVP. In addition to the many accolades of his career, he was a great friend to Mickey Mantle and lead him to the Lord. Mr. Richardson is a compelling speaker and an impressively humble man. He travels across the country delivering the Gospel to thousands. We really enjoyed getting to know him. Romans 12:2 SEVEN PILLARS OF FINANCIAL WISDOM FOR THE PASTOR Texas Governor John Connally is remembered by most people as being in the 1961 Lincoln which served as the Presidential limo with President John F. Kennedy when he was assassinated. Connally himself was hit by Lee Harvey Oswald s bullet and almost lost his life. Yet, he recovered, served three terms as Governor, helped elect three Presidents, served two cabinet posts, and died at age 76. John Connally was Secretary of the Treasury of the United States under President Richard Nixon. But there is far more to the story. Every person who has a dollar needs to pay heed to the rest of the story. This man who held the powerful cabinet post, who governed the second largest state in the union, who controlled the billions of dollars belonging to America - in July 1987 declared personal bankruptcy! His pathway is a familiar story. He made an unwise alliance with an ambitious business partner and overextended himself in building housing developments, shopping centers, and office buildings. These projects were funded on borrowed money. At one time he owed three hundred million dollars! The end result for John and Nellie Connally was the selling of all their personal belongings at public auction. Can you imagine? Although the Apostle Paul had our spiritual life in mind, when I read Connally s story, I thought of what the Bible says in I Corinthians 9:27 I discipline my life, lest after I lead others, I might fail. That s my paraphrase. We who preach stewardship, raise money for church ministries, fund missions, and oversee budgets sometimes fail in our personal finances. As a Director of Missions there were instances that I had to secure money to help older preachers who violated the warning of I Corinthians 9:27. During these trembling economic times and hearing the dismal news coming from Wall Street, we need to give special attention to our personal finances. Several years ago I developed a seminar for Pastors which I entitled Seven Pillars of Financial Wisdom for the Pastor. Let me sketch these seven out for you. 1. Beyond providing the basic necessities of life (shelter, food, clothing, etc.), money stokes ego. Understand the psychology of money. 2. Your labor is your business. Therefore, make yourself valuable. 3. Pay off your house before you are 45 years old. (Never ever take on a housing debt that is in total (principle, interest, taxes, insurance, upkeep) greater than 30% of your pay. 4. Take mastery over debt. Make debt your servant, not your master. Plug holes in a sinking ship. Don t rent money from someone else. Rent money to someone else. 5. Practice the principle of accumulation over time. 6. Work a plan on what to do with your money. You may have to start small, but start or you ll never get there. * Tithe and beyond * 10% savings: (a) for a rainy day equal to six months pay (b) I quit fund equal to six months living expenses (c) 10% for long term investment * 10% to bless the lives of others: change your spirit from poverty to prosperity by blessing the lives of other...continued on Page 4

Page 4 The Last Envelope..continued from page 1 By Alene Hinson envelope remained on my desk ready to be mailed. Every time I passed by it, I made my petition to the Lord. Early the next morning I was surprised by a call from a dear friend of ours. He asked how much was still owed on the repair and then told us that he would send a check to pay it off! Praise the Lord! So the next week God allowed us to use the last envelope to pay the balance in full. God is a mighty and faithful God. He is so worthy of our praise. I share this story not to focus on the FINANCIAL ASPECT but the FAITH ASPECT. God tells us in His word that if we will trust Him and believe Him that He will do great and mighty things. If you contributed to this ministry in any way, whether through prayers or financially, Derwin and I want to extend our gratitude to you or your church. God is changing lives and encouraging folks through Derwin Hinson Ministries, and the Lord will bless you for blessing us. Thank you to everyone who helped with the bus repair. Here s another example of God s wondrous work in our lives. In this ministry, we try to go where the Lord leads us. If a church calls to schedule us, we always try to go no matter how large or small the church or where it s located. A while back I received a call from Mr. Smith (not his real name) asking if we could give a program at his church on a Sunday morning. Since this is a by faith ministry, we try to be good stewards of the resources with which God has blessed us, i.e. time, expenses, etc. I usually try to book the Sunday morning and evening services within a close proximity so we ll have plenty of time to set up and get ready for the evening service. Well Mr. Smith s church was a little over 100 miles from the church already scheduled for that evening. I told him of my concern over the distance between the two churches, and perhaps it just wouldn t work out for that particular date. However, I took his name and number so that hopefully we could work out something for another time when we were nearby. After I hung up the phone, I felt the Lord pricking my heart over having said no. It was if He was saying, Why don t you just trust me? I continued to pray over the matter, and shortly after another church called and scheduled for that Sunday morning. I thought the matter was settled, but I still felt conviction over having said no to Mr. Smith s church. A few days later the pastor from the church that I booked called to report a conflict in their schedule and asked if we could come on another date. I was thrilled! I felt the Lord had a reason that He wanted us to go to Mr. Smith s church. Quickly, I called Mr. Smith and explained that even though the distance was a concern, if he would still like to have us, then we would come. The concert was set, and I knew the Lord would work out everything to get us to the Sunday evening service in a timely fashion. The date finally arrived. God blessed us with a wonderful service at Mr. Smith s church, and we found out the reason why the Lord wanted us there. That morning the pastor s son accepted Jesus as his Savior! Please understand, that had nothing to do with us it was all God! That young man s heart had already been plowed and planted God just used Derwin to help do the reaping! Praise God! I m so glad I listened to the Lord, and I m so thankful that He worked everything out. Please pray that the Lord will continue to use us and that we will always be sensitive to His guidance in our lives and ministry. Call unto me, and I will answer thee, and show thee great and mighty things, which thou knowest not. Jeremiah 33:3...continued from Page 3 THE PREACHERS CORNER 7. Learn the principle of compound interest in investments over time. These are time tested, honored, proven, and Biblical. It always amazes people who know a lot about money, but not much about the Bible, to learn how much the Bible has to say about money. Incorporate these into your life and God will bless you. And remember, you will never have a positive life with a negative mind. We still have some open dates in 2009, especially in July and August. Call today to schedule a concert for your church.

Page 5 Red Day at New Hope Baptist Church in Marshville, NC Derwin did a concert for Red Day at New Hope Baptist - you know Derwin liked that! Almost everyone wore red except for Derwin s two cousins, Mark and Cheryl Hinson, in the front row. Way to go Cuz! In January, Derwin sang for the Men s Gathering at Crewe Baptist Church in Virginia. The church surprised Derwin for his birthday - Paul Foote made all the arrangements and Jackie Wallace created this beautiful and delicious cake. Thanks to all the co-conspirators who helped to make this one of Derwin s best birthdays ever! Bladenboro First Assembly Derwin had a great time with the Bladenboro First Assembly Quartet which included Pastor Anthony Hardin. Derwin Hinson Ministries provided music for East Lumberton s Revival Services on Sunday, March 1. Rev. Allen Welborn, the guest speaker, preached two awesome messages that day and numerous decisions were made. Pictured above from left to right: Rev.
