ABOUT THE children s literature FESTIVAL Idara-e-Taleem-o-Aagahi (ITA) and Oxford University Press (OUP), in collaboration with Foundation Open Society Institute (FOSI) Pakistan, Bacha Khan Trust Education Foundation (BKTEF), and Islamia College University, are delighted to host the third Children s Literature Festival for the children of the historic city of Peshawar for the first time. Conceived as a campaign for developing reading habits across the country, these Festivals aim at promoting reading, creativity and critical thinking among children. Studies show that love for reading leads to children s success at school. The Children s Literature Festivals represent an exciting initiative aiming to attract children towards books, reading, writing, literature, and much more. For educators, these Festivals are designed to lead to a better understanding of using books to trigger children s imaginations. Teacher training sessions, held to educate teachers about creative teaching methods, making libraries come alive in schools, and story-telling are of benefit to both students and teachers. The first Children s Literature Festival was held at Lahore in 2011. It was an unprecedented success, with an overwhelming response from children of all ages and backgrounds. Their enthusiasm and interest were evidence of the need to bring books into children s lives. The Festival created incredible footprints and markers of success. The second Children s Literature Festival was held at Quetta in 2012. The event brought together scores of students, teachers, parents, authors, academics, and literary figures. It featured a stellar programme that included talks and readings by well known children s writers, creative writing workshops and competitions, poetry readings, seminars on promoting reading and inclusive learning, mural painting, children s theatre and films, puppet shows, and a book fair. Sessions on national and regional languages helped popularize mother tongue learning in Pakistan. The third Children s Literature Festival in Peshawar will take place on 14 and 15 November 2012 at the Islamia College University. Children and educators from all over the country are expected to attend. On the guest list are authors, publishers, and other well-known personalities promoting children s literature.
