Year of Prayer Please join the St. John community in making a New Year s resolution to PRAY every day. We introduced the Year of Prayer at masses on January 9 th and 10 th. If you didn t get a copy of the booklet Inspiring Prayer, pick one up at the doors of the church or in the office. There s also a great chapter on Daily Prayer in the Rediscover Catholicism books given out by St. John s at Christmas masses in 2014. Jambo Rafikis, Happy New Year, and God s blessings and guidance to you all and our community in the months to come. I m away from the parish this weekend, on my annual retreat. I will be praying for all of you during my retreat, as I always do. I want to let you know about two big events we re going to focus on in 2016 as a parish. First is the Year of Mercy. You have heard about this from Pope Francis, and there are some good articles in Northwest Catholic magazine this month. We are also very proud of our own eighth grade student from St. John School, Manoli Tramountanas, who won the Middle School essay contest, What does true mercy look like?. His essay is in NW Catholic, and he did very well. We should all read his essay and congratulate him. Here at St. John, we are also going to focus on Prayer in 2016. We can never express enough the importance of prayer in our faith, spiritual growth and personal relationship with God. One of my major dreams and goals when I came to this parish was to someday, be able to be part of a community that is faith filled, vibrant and prayerful. A faith community where people value prayer succeeds in its plans and goals. And therefore, prayer is not just for priests and religious, and it s not just for one hour on Sunday. Prayer is important for every person, every day. Prayer is the foundation on which we are going to build a vibrant and Spirit-filled parish. So we are going to be talking about prayer a lot this year. We are going to talk about why to pray and how to pray. I hope everyone in the parish will make a New Year s resolution this year to pray every day. And we are going to support you, and help each other, to become a parish that prays. I believe you will feel the power of prayer changing your life, and changing our parish, and that will fill my heart with so much joy for you and for all of us. The Lord bless you and keep you in this New Year! The Lord let his face shine upon you, and be gracious to you! The Lord look upon you kindly and give you peace! Padre Crispin

Liturgy Reflection ~ Ordinary Time January 17, 2016 Year C 2nd Sunday of Ordinary Time The occasion of a wedding feast becomes the scene for Jesus first sign of His glory. A miraculous transformation of water into wine opens His disciples into further belief. This transformation is effected quietly. Jesus mother prompts him with a simple statement, They have no more wine. And Jesus himself commands, in a simple way, Now draw some out and take it to the waiter in charge. The way in which this miraculous transformation occurs is not dramatic. But the end result certainly is astounding. Water becomes wine. In the first reading, Isaiah uses a simple image to convey to the people the effect of God s favor upon Israel. He speaks about a young man marrying his bride. What could be more ordinary? A man and woman stand before their family and friends and proclaim simple words as they vow themselves to one another. The effect, however, is beheld over an entire lifetime of faithfulness. Husband and wife become a royal diadem and glorious crown. God takes to himself a people, Israel, and calls them espoused and my delight. The culmination of this relationship is to be found in Jesus and his new covenant. The fruit of this covenant is the gift of the Spirit, as St. Paul reminds us in the second reading. A simple wedding celebration. Jesus quiet, commanding words effect a powerful transformation. The waters of our lives become the choice, rich wine of his Spirit. Rejoice! Spend some quiet time reflecting one or more of the following: What are the gifts you have been given in your life by Jesus? How does the spirit call you to best use your gifts in service to the needs of others? Imagine Jesus before you and commanding, Now take some and draw it out! What part of you might He be talking about? Is there an area in your life that needs transforming? Offer that part of yourself to Jesus, and in your prayer use the words of Isaiah, I shall be called a new name. Next Week s readings The 3rd Sunday in Ordinary Time January 24, 2016 year Readings C First Reading Nehemiah 8:2-4a, 5-6, 8-10 They read from the book of the book of the Law and understood what was read. Psalm 19 Your words, Lord, are Spirit and life. Second Reading 1 Corinthians 12:12-30 We are Christ s body. Gospel Luke 1:1-4; 4:14-21 Today the Scripture passage is fulfilled. Even though the Our first reading sets the stage for today s Gospel. Both stories tell of the proclamation of God s word in the midst of the assembly, and of how that word is being fulfilled. Saint Paul today proclaims that we are members of Christ s body. As members of that body, we are compelled to continue the mission that Jesus proclaims. Catholic Cemeteries We remember and give thanks at our regular Eucharistic celebrations for all of those who have died. All are invited. While many attendees are Catholic, married couples of all faiths are welcome.
